At the coronation assembly, the class of '76 Homecoming Royalty were hon- ored before our own king and queen were crowned. A quarter a kiss was charged at the kissing booth during both lunches even though some students were willing to pay SIO to kiss the King or Queen. A fashion show was held at lunch by the Homecoming Royalty. The lavish at- l6 Homecoming 5 . l l tire modelled was furnished by the Lost and Found Department. Gales of laughter filled the cafeteria when the pie throwing contest took place. Whipped cream flew everywhere, including on the Court's hair and face. lt took Lea Sargent three days to get the vanilla scent out of her hair! Electricity crackled in the air at Fri- day's pep assembly. Students and facul- ty cheered and caused a ruckus, psych- ing the football players up for the game that night against Oak Harbor. Even though the home football games had to be held at Lakewood's stadium, it didn't stifle the crowd's in- toxicating enthusiasm one bit! Halftime activities were held and the class of '76 were again honored and pa- raded around the stadium, joined by MP's own royalty. The evening was topped off by the after-game dance. Everyone danced, got crazy, and had a terrific time, thus ending the Homecoming week of 85-863 f 'N. 'X Q I fx ' .. 1 1 ', - 9, J v I . . W 'A ' 5 . Adams leadership conference began the year for our A.S.B. officers. At this meeting they met with other schools and discussed new concepts in leadership. During the year they attended many of these confer- ences to keep updated in leadership strategies. One of the main goals of the officers was to attain superb relations between students and teachers, Jana, our school board representative, started a commit- tee to help work toward this goal. The officers also set up a committee vote on a staff member of the month. They felt that the teachers' work de- serve our appreciation. Together these officers achieved many of their ambitions for the school, because they work well together as one big family. We're a unique network of individ- uals. We worked hard and learned from our mistakes. We've had a wonderful year and we will miss the special times we have had, said our President Tammy. This yeor's ASB are Pres. Tommy Olson, V.P. The cheerstaff put in five weeks of practice and one week of camp in El- lensburg during the summer. After that, workouts were every Monday, Tues- day, and Thursday after school. They attended World Cheerleading Camp Counsel Camp in July at Central Washington University. There, group Superior and Excellent awards were re- ceived for cheer and leadership quali- ties. The Cheerleaders themselves held two other clinics during basketball sea- son for kids ages 3-l3 to familiarize them with cheering technics. Some of the money makers were cheer clinics and dances throughout the year, as well as a car wash at the begin- ning of the year. lt was a tremendous amount of work, but the girls all worked together as a team to make it work. There were no captains or co-cap- tains, but as Senior Michelle Roach said, l'We were all leaders. The Concert Band marched in the Autumn Leaf Festival parade in Leavenworth. Also, they at- tended the Queen's Birthday Festival in Victoria, Canada. Jazz Band kept stu- dents entertained as they played during lunch in October. ln November, Jazz Band competed at, the Marysville-Pil- chuck Jazz Festival. Both bands worked on establishing themselves as one of the best in the state. The year kept all mem- bers busy with concerts, festivals, com- petition, and parades. The band's 30 Clubs motto was: Strive for excellence stat- ed the band director Dale Ayote. Indian Club Indian Club leaders were: President Bobbi Zackuse, Vice President Cass Basset, Secretary Marci Fryberg,,and Treasurer Carrie Fryberg, arranged many exciting programs for the group. A traditional ceremony honoring gradu- ating students, and a trip to both the Vancouver Indian Art Museum and Burke Museum in Seattle were held. The Advisors, Debora Posey and Steve Anderson, along with the mem- bers had set goals to have each and every Indian student of M.P.H.S. realize there is an organized club to participate in. x'We want more students to be in- volved and make a better club, said the Indian Club leaders. The Indian Club members pride them- selves in 'iOur unity and sense of self- importance in our inheritance, our cul- ture, and what we are. Mat Maids The Marysville-Pilchuck Mat Maids consisted of fifty enthusiastic girls, who supported the wrestling program while involving other school students and the community. The Mat Maids held a candy sale in the fall and a car wash in November which were decidedly successful as well as interesting. Mat Maids held practices every night before a match to learn cheers and dis- cuss business. The State Tournament in Ellensburg and a Cheer Camp in Bel- lingham are a few of the other activities that the Mat Maids attended. The officers were as follows: Presi- dent, Cherril Jessen, Vice President Debbie Thomas, Secretary, Marie Nor- ton, Treasurer, Tricia Velo, and Histori- an, Karla Klementsen. The advisor, Royann Almond, sum- marized the year by saying, nThe 85-86 Mat Maids were the best in the state. I Tommiettes Bright lights and modern music set the mood for the team as they get ready to perform before fifteen-hundred stu- dents at a pep assembly. The dancers snap into the music as the crowd quiets to watch the intricate routine. Even before school started the Tom- miettes were hard at work at a dance workshop held at Kentridge. The girls earned seven i'superior and four nex- celIent ribbons as a group. School came and the Tommiettes ac- cepted their new members and started the tough job of learning and Upractic- ing to make perfect new routines. Some of the songs they performed to were Gratitude, The Bird, and i'Viva La Rock, In January and February, the I7 girls performed at pep assemblies, basket- ball games, and attended a pre-state competition in Issaquah. Later in the spring they performed at state competi- tion. The goals for this year the girls felt helped them the most from beginning to end were: to promote school spirit, pride and work together as a unit. German Club Christmas seemed to arrive early this year thanks to the German Club. Mem- bers began selling advent calendars be- fore Halloween. This event proved even more profitable than in past years. An extremely large addition to the German club population seemed to make a dif- ference in the amount of sales. With their large earnings the seniors got a trip to Leavenworth. They really enioyed ex- ploring the shops and restaurants in the authentic German town. The 85-86 Ger- man club officers were: President, Stacy Wagner, Vice-President, Corey Weih- muller, Secretary, Tammy Olsen, Trea- surer, Ellen McKenzie, Seargent at Arms, Jeff Beauchamp. Int. Exchange There were 20 members in the Inter- national Exchange Club, twelve foreign students and eight American. The stu- dents came from Japan, Spain, Mexico, Geremany, Finland, France, and Viet Nam. The advisors for the club were Cora Krell and Evie Graef. This year, the Exchange Club went to the Seattle Aquarium, Pike Place Mar- ket, and The Seattle Center. They also spent a week-end during International week visiting other schools. . . . Bulletin Q,,L.ef'l - Xgoiffe A 9005 ld-d A-N9 fl- u3arlC9-fl' SIL Clow vvuy-l bleak:--FA-U .Saw--1-2-F The Exchange Club had a get-ac- quainted pot-luck party on Oct. l2. They also had a very successful skating party and Christmas Celebration. The main goal of the Exchange Club was to help the foreign students adjust to school life here. French Club French Club had a record turnout in l985-86. Club size increased by 20 members. Their advisor, Ms. Almond, expressed thanks to the sophomores for the club's expansion. I am extreme- ly pleased with the size of the group, said Ms. Almond. Members participated in a variety of activities and fund raisers. Car washes, candy sales, and bake sales were the productive money raisers of the year. Officers stressed the importance of holiday parties because they felt it brought the group closer together. At these parties they listened to music, played games, and ate crepes. A visit to an exquisite french restau- rant concluded the years' activities. The advisor sponsored this to show her ap- preciation to the club. The new officers for the year were: President, Steve Mitzel, Vice President, Darren Matthews, Secretary, Monica Jones, and Treasurer, Tami Hughes. HC rleilifw Spanish Club Spanish Club began their new year by planning Halloween and Christmas par- ties. They also planned a bake sale, raf- fled off a pinata for Christmas, and sold balloon-o-grams for Valentine's Day. ln addition to their other activities, the club attended a Spanish Festival in Seat- tle. The club, consisting of about l5O members, elected officers President, Michelle Rogers, Vice President, Kelly Cox, Secretary, Tami Rohde, and Trea- surer, Eric Egelstad. Honor Society Smarts are at it again. The Honor So- ciety had a great year. Honor students must maintain a 3.5 as a Sophomore, a 3.2 as a Junior, and a 3.0 as a Senior. Students must work diligently to acheive and maintain their grades. Other re- quirements were to attend the regularly held meetings, participate in raising money and joining in the cultural events which were held. This years officers were: President, Michele Hill, Vice President, Ken Cam- plese, Attendance Secretary, Shelly Hol- lis, and Recording Secretary, Gretchen Timm ,, YV ,1i7' IV 1 ew' lo' V . g DM! The culprit, a nineteen year old boy, was accused of stabbing and killing his father, but he claimed that evening he was at the movies. The jurors found it difficult to decide what the verdict should be. Juror 1-13, played by Marvin Crum, strongly felt that the boy was guilty and the others believed him guilty also, ex- cept Juror -tf6, played by Craig Olsen. l-le felt that the evidence wasn't con- vincing enough and that it was unjust to send a man to die without a fair trial. One by one the jury went through ev- ery act of the murder and what the wit- nesses saw. Then, the evidence turned out to be weaker than it first seemed. This brought about arguments until Ju- ror 113, the intolerant, humorless man stood alone with his opinion. Finally, he broke under the pressure and gave in so that the jurors final decision that was taken to the judge was, not guilty . Twelve Angry Jurors was Mr. Brian Kesler's first play as a director. When we thought of teachers, we sometimes tended to think of them as people who sat behind desks in class- rooms, trying desperately to teach us something. What we seldom thought about was that these people, just like us, had a lot of other interests outside of school that we never heard too much about. Many teachers have families, and spend their spare time with them. Others follow up on hobbies and other activities. Teaching is a tough job, kids make teaching even tougher, and their nega- tive attitudes, unwillingness to learn, drives teachers insane. Teachers have had certain criteria to teach within the classroom. lt was their job to do so. Almost as much as the students, teachers looked forward to spending some time relaxing and enjoying them- selves during the upcoming summer va- cation. Teachers' interests are the same as students, vacationing, seeing rela- tives and many sporting activities. Teachers are the most understanding people in the world. But face it, they are the ones who help make us successes in life. 70 Faculty MMC x Nr ,...,.,, IL 1 . Q ,, : kk W P L . Difficulties plagued the l 985-86 yearbook. As Ovid once said, There is no excellence un- coupled with difficulties. Our advisor, Mrs. Jackson, the staffers, and myself, coped well, however. That is, of course, with a little help from others, tolerations, and pounds of determination from all. When Mrs. Jackson received her gift of Tylenol 3 from her staffers, little did she know how much she would use them. With her unique and cunning way, she swung many a deal for her staff. She worked and worried, to bring about her first book, a book she could be proud of, yet still survive through. Kelly Cox, who worked as my assis- tant editor, helped train new staffers. She worked hard on our senior section, to pull off the new format used. She was always there if I needed a second opin- ion, or needed to be corrected. Debbie Lawrence and Jackie Good also worked on the senior section. Hours upon hours were spent to accom- plish this task. Beth Dirks, Ann Robinson, Cindy Ol- stad, and Michelle Shake were new ad- ditions to our group first semester. All worked diligently on the club pages. Even when things were near impossible to do, they did it. Both Lea Sargent and Curtis Freeling combined, did well over thirty pages of the book. Lea's main project was the The Afterschoolers color essay, and Curtis' was the divider pages, and the black and white essay. This was an extreme feat of ability on both parts. Tracy Hartle, who not only was in a class by herself, but a corner as well, did a wonderful job. Her main chore was the survey and current event pages. Switch- ing from photographer to copy writing, DeVon Edwards labored, and l do mean labored, on faculty pictures. As he found out, being a writer isn't all its cracked up to be. Thanks to Tom Youngblood and Carolyn Haight we have a junior and sophomore mug section. Many a day after school was spent tagging and naming pictures. Things were kept bear- able by Tom's chatter and Carolyn's laughter. Both also spent much time do- ing photography in the darkroom, but offered their services in the copy room when needed. Rich and Ken, two very talented pho- tographers, took unique shots, that we used throughout the book. Ken spent most of his time collaborating with Cur- tis to develop the perfect shot for each divider page. Rich concentrated his efforts on sports action. Jeffrey Beauchamp was our ever- ready foundation of positive thought and willingness. He was the person all staffers 'ltiptoed around, always care- ful to treat him with the utmost respect. But of course, he loved all new staffers, and was always cheerful and smiling to- wards everyone. Micha Pierce, a sophomore photog- rapher, spent most of her time running. Commonly known as a go-fer , if a soda pop was needed, Micha was your woman, She was utilized frequently to run errands to the offices or elsewhere. Writers Monica Olson, Mistie Colfelt, Jackie Holland, and Photographers Ta- mara Becker and Mike Roberts joined us at the start of second semester. With the February deadline increased from sixteen to thirty-two pages, they were all busy immediately. And then there was of course, Matt Huckabone. Sometimes being editor was not exactly as l had expected. lt had its times of satisfaction, but in be- tween those times, it was downright lonely and frustrating. His main service on annual staff probably was to help me, the editor, survive it. A big thank you goes to those veter- an annual advisors, Tom Bolster and Bob Dietel for all the extras. Whenever we had questions, or needed a pat on the back to boost the confidence up, they were there, The understanding of many staff members here at MP didn't go unnoticed, either. Special acknowl- edgement went to Mrs. Mandich, Mr. Hubbard and Mr. DeGross. We were also forever indebted to those makers of ghetto blasters, soda pop, M8tM's, and aspirin. Those of course, were packed along to every Sat- urday work day, anything to ease the pain of a deadline date. Besides these crutches, periodic bashers were held to keep up the waning morale. The two most important of these were the Christmas bash and the final bash when the book was completed. We became a society of after- schoolers. Towards deadline time we might as well have stayed the night at the school. Spending this much time on something did have its rewards, though. Friendships can now be cherished for years to come, memories to reflect on, and a deep sense of pride in what we did. All the votes came together and were sorted out, the outcome resulting in an array of various colors. Favorite musical groups came as hard and heavy as Metallica and as soft as Whitney Houston. Iron Maiden, Tears for Fears, DIO, Huey Lewis and the News, INXS, Wham, and ACXDC fell in- between. The favorite song category was over- run with votes for How Will I Know? , Russians , Wham Rap , For Who the Bell Tolls , Money for Nothing , Saving All My Love for You and Sep- arate Lives . On the silver screen, Back to the Fu- ture took first place for favorite movie, with 'lRocky 4, and Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2 close behind. On the t.v. screen, votes came in for the Cosby Show, Miami Vice and Family Ties. A wide array of fads developed throughout the year. Votes were cast for paisly, oversized sweaters and sweatshirts, stirrup pants, and grey Le- vis. Leather, long hair, and punkfwave haircuts were also popular. Winning the favorite hangout cate- gory was Godfather's Pizza. MP stu- dents also voted for the place to be as Buzzies, Seattle, Herfys on Ever- green, and the in-famous Thunderbird Drive ln. Pastimes that kept us busy in our spare time were sports, music, cruising, shopping, and talking on the phone. This procedure be- your makes your intentions s at the beginning of the semester. far too cIear.l Pick a seat close to o wall, a corner if possible. Sit near the back, but not in the back row. Many teachers watch the back row for troublemakers. Most important, however, don't sit in the middle third of the room. Sleepers will be readily seen by teachers. Another important point is to make it appear as if you are awake. Open your book and spread a few papers around. Remember once you are asleep you have no way to protect yourself from being caught, so you must make your- self inconspicuous. SLEEPING IN COMFORT: PERFECT- ING YOU SLOUCH To sleep comfortably you must as- sume the correct position. Most desks were not designed with sleeping in mind. Many do, however, have little features that allow easy, restful, slumber. The first step in assuming your slouch is to slump so that the small of your back is at the turn of your seat. lf the I 50 Creativety Contest ACHIEVING PROPER STATE OF MIND: RELAXING To sleep easily you must think properly. There is not a cut and dried way to think. This is a personal thing. Most important is to think of something you enioy: a favorite place or a relaxing fantasy. Naturally, you cannot sleep in a class you enjoy. The best classes to sleep in are those with large amounts of reading or other bookwork. HI-lands on classes are not easy to sleep in. WAKING UP: REORIENTATION Waking up is the most difficult part of schooltime slumber. It is necessary to orient yourself to the subject your class is discussing. This is easier if a friend sits nearby that you can ask. If you are called on while asleep, The best response is ul don't know, but this is a little iffy. It is a very rare occurrence to sleep through the bell. The noise of other stu- .X dents leaving will normally wake you. Occasionally, however, you will forget what your next class is. Do not worry, this is completely normal. In conclusion, sleeping in class is a healthy pastime. lt allows you to get needed rest in an otherwise boring class. Sleeping in class is exceptionally easy and spares you from the unending tedi- um that is school. Folks.. Creativety Contest l5l The Year of the Comet I985-86 turned out to be extra-ordinary years for all of us at Marsyville Pilchuck High School. ln addition to all of the exciting, not-so-exciting, and downright boring activities chronicled in the yearbook so far, a mysterious force has been at work among us, and whether we realize it or not, affecting us in many ways. THE FORCE, of course, is the long-awaited Hal- ley's Comet. Legend has it that the comet causes people to do weird things. Halley's Comet has been blamed for such happenings as war, pestilence, drought, earth- quakes and floods, and has influenced art, religion, literature, warfare, evolution and the very beginnings of life itself. The Chinese recorded the appearance of comets as early as 613 B.C. Modern man has devel- oped equally fantastic theories, including the idea that earth itself may have been formed when a comet hit the sun 65 million years ago. ls it any wonder then, that Halley's Comet is affect- ing so many of us right here at MPHS and in so many strange and wonderful ways? lf North is here . . . l 52 Current Events ' 11'- fir, O O I 'Sf ,,,,,f , W e , i . Students Lend Listening Ears This year Marysville Pilchuck started a new program called Natural Helpers. This began when a school-wide survey asked which students, or teachers they might go to if they needed someone to talk with about their problems. The goal of this program was to teach the chosen students how to make them- selves into better listeners and to have somewhere for other students to go with their problems. At the beginning of the school year, after the natural helpers had been picked, they all went on a two day work- shop at Camp Houston. There they learned new skills in how to listen and help others with problems. Later in the year they also attended a workshop in Tacoma. The advisors, Mr. Stokes and Mrs. McCarthy, met with the students two Wednesday mornings each month. Also helping with the program were Mr. Craft, Mr. Carpentier, Mr. Anderson, Mrs. Pickering, and Mrs. Rowley These are a group of real enthusias- tic young people, commented Mr. Stokes. They represent the good in this school and are in the business to help others. l .
