Due to heavy rain and lightning, the game was postponed from Friday to Saturday night. The girls were forced to endure, not only the anxiety of Friday night, but the added stress from the delay. M.H.S. goes on and on, day after day, year after year with the important events making news among the stu ent body. Several years later we will still be able to remember our Homecoming queen, our Favorite eacher, our Best Friend. But will we be able to remember some of The Major News events of the year? The year started with Mrs. Reagan announcing her War on Drugs which was brought to our attention because oft e death of Len Bias. ill Do you remember The U. of aryland Basketball Star who was drafted by The Boston Celtics but died of cocaine one week later? Will his death make a difference in the years to come? Do you remember when The Ferry, The Herald of Free Enterprise sunk? Someone left the main doors open and in came the water and down went The Ferry f2l Pictured here on The Way To he Bottom. Do you remember The big news of early 1987 - The return of The America's Cup? l3l Dennis Conner sailed his Stars 81 Stripes to victory over The Australian Champion Kiwi II. Wall Street was shaken when Ivan Boesky Q43 was caught getting unfair tips on stocks that encouraged an artificial price and caused a drastic decline in The Market. Insider Trading Wall St. rumbles as brokers take unfair ad- vantage of many in- vestors due to the brokers advantageous position. But without a doubt the biggest news of the year centered around President Reagan. First he met the new Russian Premier Gorbachev at the Iceland Summit that was designed to encourage Arms Reduction f5l and then he imposed Trade Sanctions against Japan f6l when the Japanese flooded The Electronic lndustry. The world of politics did have a brighter side as democracy returned to The Phillipines and Corayan Aquino l7l was elected President. Do you remember? After losing the opening game to Kenton Ridge, Marysville rebounded to defeat Delaware Hayes 10-7 in overtime. The next two weeks saw the Monarchs lose two games in the 4th quarter. Whitehall broke open a game Marysville had controlled for 3 quarters to win 24-7 and Academy hit a 4th and 12 pass for a 50 yard touchdown late in the 4th for the 21-14 Academy win. The following week, the Monarchs dominated Homecoming opponents by posting a 19-14 victory over West Jeff with two 4th quarter touchdowns. The next week, Marysville found the ankle deep mud on the field and 4 inches of water along the sidelines to their liking as Big Walnut was held to a total of- fense of a negative 23 yards and no first downs in an 11-0 Monarch victory. Dublin defeated the Monarchs the next week 7-2 in a defensive struggle. The following week saw Marysville drop a 17-7 decision to London. With the record at 3-5 for the season and 2-3 in the league, Marysville defeated Buckeye Valley at home 9-7 and then travelled to Bexley to finish the season against the league champions who were undefeated in the league until Marysville defeated them in a tough defensive game. 3 CID Football HONOFIED AS PLAYER OF THE ,fa YEAR J Defensive Linebacker Judd Tressler Offensive Lineman Kelly Croy Defensive Lineman John Moore Offensive EndlReceiver Judd Tressler Defensive Back Jim Schneider Offensive Back Ken Miller 572 64 Q zo' 19 X ew., 1,3 A '1 -1 ew J i'k . 1 f 5 1 K i f,x O Those aggressive Monarchs! 9 9 f A Football SP3 1 V RSITY Flow 1: Brad Gilbert, Dan Fry, Mark Clarridge, Randy Hutchins, Richard Baird, Kelly Croy, Brian Jablonski, Judd Tressler, Ken Mille Schneider, John Moore, Brett Grove, Bob Hammond, Mike Jones, Mike Asbury. Furthermore, the Varsity competed at the Ohio State Fair receiving first runner-up awards. The JV attended ECA cheerleading camp receiving superior awards. Both squads at- tended state competition in Dublin. Varsity received 6th in pom-pon competition and JV received 7th in cheer. Going AAA this fall they drew Bishop Hartley in tournament play, another exciting match which Coach Norris felt should have been won. We lost the serve in the third game with us up 14-13 and we never got it back. Co-Captains for the team were Jill Shumway and Rhonda Ianni. Setters were Jodie Hyland, Amy Michael and Tonya Nicol. Their 12-9 record was the best for a Monarch squad since 1976-77. The team was comprised of seven seniors, seven returning Iettermen, and two new players who transferred rom other schools. Expecta- tions were high and the team worked hard to achieve victory. The season started with a heartbreaking loss 161-591 to Jonathon Alder. Followed by a nightmarish perfor- mance at Delaware, the Monarchs struggled to find themselves going 2-5 into Christmas break. Then things began to fall into place. They put together a great performance in a 64-63 win against Bexley. In one of the most dramatic finishes, lone second was put back on the clockj, Chris Schimmel threw a full court pass to Tony Fuller who banked in a shot at the buzzer. The win was only the start of three straight one-point victories. ln any season the Fairbanks game is a contest in which pride is the most important goal. This year was an exceptional game. Marked by the stream of toilet paper to start the game the crowd which filled the gym became emotionally involved. Both teams played their hearts out as Marysville prevailed in a 64-56 overtime win. Success followed as the Monarchs finished the season, highlighted by Jon Neely's climb to second place in the all time scoring ranks. The Monarchs were a group which faced adversity in the early going, but found a way to overcome their hard times and have a great year. Congratulations to one of the best Marysville basketball teams in recent years. RSITY VA 45 C939 W no m W' co H 5' Ei Kneeling: Jon Neely, Joe Wilkerson, Tony Fuller, Doug Sabins, Ken Kaufman. The Monarchs were 17-8 for all games and their 11-5 league record was two games better than runner-up Dublin's 9-7 league record. This seasons suc- cess can be attributed in large part to a very potent offense which produced an average of 7.7 runs per game for the 25 game season. The .311 team batting average and 191 runs scored were the highest offensive totals for the past 8-10 years. Dennis Gallogly 1.4483, Mark Clarridge 1.4133, Chris Schimmel 1.3813, and Eric Howard 1.3643 were the top hitters on this year's squad. Dennis led the team in hits 1393, home runs 143, game winning hits 143, on base percentage 1.5773, and was second in RBl's with 28. Mark led the team in doubles 1103, triples 153, RBl's 1293, walks 1193, and lowest strike out average 14 in 100 plate ap- pearances3. Chris led the team in runs scored 1293, being hit by the pitcher 143, and was se- cond in stolen bases 1163. Jim Schneider led the team in stolen bases with 19. Eric Howard was the top pitcher with a 6-1 record and Rob Horney contributed heavily to our success with a 4-4 record and 5 saves. Defense was also a strong point with Sean Hall having the highest fielding average among infielders 1.9433, Mark Clarridge among pitchers and catchers 1.9833, and Chris Schimmel among outfielders and first basemen 1.9523. The Mentor Program The Career Mentorship Program is an innovative pro- gramming option for students in the Marysville School District's Able Learners Program. Students are provided with an opportunity to explore the world of work with suc- cessful professionals, business people and community leaders. The mentors act as career advisors, while pro- viding students with on the job experience. For a 9-week period, seniors worked with community professionals in the career and interests fields the student wished to pur- sue. Afterwards, a written composition and journal kept continually throughout the experience are submitted for a final grade. This program was highly successful and will continue as a beneficial program for upcoming seniors. IN Mrs. Betty Wolstenholme - Gifted Program Coordinator, N.H.S. Our dedication paid off in matches with area schools tLondon, Jonathon Alder, Madison Plains, Delawarej and in tour- naments at London and Kenton in which fourteen central Ohio schools participated. Team members revealed surprising areas of knowledge: Lora Lewis was our outstanding religion and mythology expert, Rachel Snook scored on TV, movies and yes, Ivanhoe and Gone With the Wind t Good for at least one question every competition, Rachel! Todd Miller proved that he is a whiz on military and U.S. history: Marty Rausch is a math and science person and fthe truth is outll knows an amazing amount about sports. Dan Davis will take a shot at just about anything, and comes up right an astonishing number of times, it's his bloopers we all really wait for though. Sean Thompson and Bill Baldwin claim they are strickly into Science and Math. Mary Geopfert participated until time pressures caught up with her. One of the hdlghlights ofthe Klear was the 1st Annual Teachers vs. Students Challenge Competition. On this memorable occasion Mrs. Liggett, Mrs, Nicely, r. Junker, and r. McCartney matched wits, successfully as it turned out, with members of the team. Watch out though, teachers, revenge is sweet! Advisors for the team, and therefore entitled to the best seats and all of the heat in the van, were Mrs. Skidmore and Mrs. Patton, if This year the Catseye magazine marked the end of an era - the final year of helpful assistance by Mrs. Anne Skidmore. For students to become members of the Catseye staff, they have to submit at least 3 entries of poetry, photography, drawing, painting, or prose, for publication. In addition to staff members working on entries for the magazine, they were also involved in the Valentine's Day Carnation Sale to raise funds for publication. English . Ex., 'Q if '19 -ai 1 ff. rs. Gradually, with the help of former debater, Ray lr- win, they improved their record week by week until by district time The Marysville Duo had become one of the teams to be feared and Dawn Smith had become the best female debater in the State. Things started off well as several class members got together to construct a float for homecoming at M.H.S. Everyone should remember the Fly to Victory theme with Dumbo soaring over the hopeless foe. Enthusiasm and class spirit continued as the sophomores tackled a series of projects designed to increase the treasury for the prom of 1988. Sophomores definitely led the way in school spirit when the class sponsored Spirit Week during basketball season. First we had everyone who wanted to show their school spirit wear their clothes backwards. Next the enthusiastic sophomores had clash day where all clothes had to clash - the wilder the better. Finally, the week ended with a tradi- tional Red and Blue day to show the spirit that spreads through the halls of M.H.S. All in all the sophomores planted the seed of success for a future that is full of promise. Their first goal was to build the best homecoming float, and with a lot of hard work and fun they won the first place trophy. The next goal on their list was money raiser for their Junior Prom in 19893 they raised over S2000 by selling candy. The class of '90 looks for- ward to three more suc- cessful years of high school: hoping and knowing that they will be as good as their first. 7 6 Freshmen fll 4 ,elf lf Vice President - Neil Baker: Secretary - Carla Ganglulf Treasurer Brashearsg President- Rachel Deck ws i Am' Q' nf f fled' ov- ., . -- ' 4 if ' t B -fo Y xl? t - tif 1 , ' ' X ,4 Q 4 xv! I feel we've put together one of the best yearbooks MHS has had due to our excellent staff! , There were many changes in this year- book: color on opening pages, a new current events section, more action photos throughout the S book, unity among the sports' sections, plus many other changes. Hopefully, these changes are to your liking as we tried to capture what makes hig school so exciting: friendshigs, pep rallies, Homecomings, Halloween, rom, Gradua- tion, etc. , As ylou leaf through this book, we trust you will ever Say Goodbye to the memories collected on these pages, l S S t tx 42 ' S Pnyuissosier g,sMf.tiSr4i,,p,-lvesrbasrttAdvisor are S1986-87 Editor. r - - lPWS,Seller-tYBta'bQ0KEdie' TAFF IKS .di w.,,:e I?
