.F4,2 Bulldogs Are NCKL Champs ?1' KI Back Row: Alan Twidwell, Bob Scheele, Jerry Manley, Charles VVetzler, Captain Bill Blackburn, Jim Maendele Front Row: Jim Madden, V-erl Moser, Coach Bob Johnson, Harold Tebbutt, Don Ungerer - The 1955-56 roundball season saw the Bulldogs turn in one of the best cage performances in many years. This included the first NCKL crown won by a MHS team in 14 years, second place trophy at the district tournament at Sabetha. and a third place trophy in the regional at Effingham. - The Bulldogs started the season off right on the home court with -a 56-53 win over Fairbury in a game which still showed the signs of a little football roughness. The first road trip of the season proved fatal as the Beatrice Orangemen sent the Bulldogs home with a 60-51 loss. b Smith Center was ushered into the NCKL by the MHS quintet which showed sufficient spark, though not consistent, to down the R'-dmen. 48-36 at Sinith Center, Lincoln threatened to stop the Bulldogs on the MHS court, but the Red and Black came back in the fourth quarter to finish ahead of the Leopards, 42-35. A fast and furious fourth quarter by the Bulldogs again proved too much for Belleville, as the Bulldogs ran up 21180-62 score before the gun sounded in the Buffs gym, The Bulldogs were again threatened on their home court :vnen-Belfort invaded, but again it was the Bulldogs steadiness under pressure in the closing minutes which pulled them O 3 Ji-.7 XVIII. Minneapolis provided the biggest hurdle in the first half of league play, leading the Bulldogs all the way on their home court. Not until the final period could the Bulldogs pull ahead with a tremendous team effort to win. 69-63. Arch-rival Concordia fell by the wayside as the crusading Bulldogs wallopr-d them 62--lil on the home court In 3 SUJW- Fftililvfi game in the MHS gym, the Bulldogs s'-alped the Smith Center Redmen, 52-36. .The Bulldogs next piayed host to VVamego in a non-league contest but were unable to cope with the sharp SIIOOUYIFJ of U19 RPG R21fd0I'S Gnd Suffi-red their seeind defeat of the season, 61-5-1, Back in league play at Lincoln 3g91f3l1IICIf1f.Ii trailed all the way by a narrow margin and were forced to makf 5 points in the final -15 seconds to win, The first defeat in league play was suffered when sharp shooting Belleville upset the slipping Bulldogs on the home court, GS-57. After ci ten day layoff, the Bulldogs came back strong to defeat an ever threatening Beloit team at Beloit by a score of 62-53. The league championship came with the win over Minneapolis, desperate in their fight for a league title tie with the Bulldogs, in the MHS gym with the final st-.ire posted, S3-T3. XVit.h the league title cinched. the Bulldogs invaded Concordia only to be set back by the Panthers, 5-I-50. in a fast and furious game. MHS was granted a bye in the district tournament at Sabetha on the strength of their II-4 record. The Bulldogs next met Hiawatha in the championship game, but could not cope with the extra tall Indian team and WU' d'ifPmf'fi- 5541- In U10 f'9!i.mal tournament at Effingham, the Bulldogs met and put up a desperate fight with the Haskell Indians but were unable to stop the faster Indians who defeated them 64-57 and went on to finish second in the state tournament. In the final game of the season, DeSoto was edged rut 53-52 iby the Bulldogs in a final surge of power.
