The paper served as a record of the year's activities and events, and gave the cl-ass experience in reporting, editing, and creative writing. Ellen McLaughlin served as editor-in-chief, the only permanent staff position, for the entire year. The other editorships were rotated among the remaining class members. The paper was mimeographed by the advanced stenography class under the supervision of Miss Creager. In addition, the journalism class published the yearbook with each class member responsible for a certain section. Volunteers from the senior class assisted in its preparation. Mr. Martinez helped with the photography and finishing and the Marshall County News supplied the printing. He made their joys and sorrows his own. In his attempts to aid these youngsters he often ran afoul of certain conservative groups in his church. He scandalized two older members by his rev- olutionary tactics and openly opposed an important member of Congress over the case of a juvenile delinquent. All of this work proved too strenuous for him and he suffered a severe heart attack. After his partial recovery he was offered the posi- tion of Chaplirl of the United States Senate. He had a difficult time explaining to his wife Catherine, that he must continue his work. Finally he made her understand what he must dog and she agreed with him when he said, It isn't 'how long we live, but how wellg whether or not we keep our bargain with Him. The Kays operated the refreshment stand during foot- ball season by volunteer members. For the Christmas season the Kays dec- orated the halls and on December 19, held their formal dance far the student body. The music was supplied by Nels Ingalsbe and his orchestra. Kayettes were awarded the 3000 point award for the third time at the Kay-Kayette conference at Minneapolis, October 26-27. Only seven Kayette organizations in Kansas rank this high. Points for this award were earned during the 1954-1955 school term. During the past school term, the Kayettes were striving for their fourth 1000 point award. In order to earn points the organization, besides undertaking various committee projects, has worked as a group to present the Thanksgiving and Easter programs to the student body, to entertain eighth graders at the Little Sister Party. to sing Christmas carols for shut-ins, and to collect offerings for Meals for Millions. The Kayettes sacked over 2000 sacks of Christmas candy and over 4000 sacks of Easter candy under the guidance of the Chamber of Commerce, as another group project. The girls also made a pre-school survey of Marysville for the school board. The Kayette candy stand is another important project which the entire organiui- tion supports: from the sale of candy, ice-cream, pencils, book covers and Kleenex the Kayettes derive a large share of their income. The tenth anniversary of the Marysville Kayettes was celebrated at a party at the high school on February 17. Miss Wanda Mae Vinson, state director of Kayettes, was present to speak on the program. llramatrcs Club Has Try out Programs -1 Top Row Gary Zarybnicky Larry Johnson Bill Blackburn Charles Laverentz Roger Stanton Adrin lrley Richard Johanns L Roy Wohler Charles Wetzler Jim Nladden Bob Thomas Carl Nlentgen Harry XVu'lschleger Fourth Row Bernie-ce Hartig Barbara Parry Lois Kraemer Karen Strand Karen Sherrill 'Viarcia Bell Cecelia Ixloek r Florence Sanderson Lllen NI Laughlin Nirginia Schulz Jeannine Johannes Ruth Dxxerlkotte JoAnn Brauchi Carol DFQYQI Tlurd Row Jeannette Nlehrig Judy Krug Marilyn Grauer Barbara Koch Peggy Hoffman Bette Wolff Douglas hup r Donald Livingston Leo Busch June Clark Nlarilee Throm Cathie Dexter Sharon Bteedin Joan Nlarquardt Second Row Connie Nieberding Donna Cumro Pat Rowland Roseanne Saville Donella 'VIcQuery karen Kloxn Carol Orr Lucia Brodrick Linda Guise Dorothy Griffin Front Row 'llr VVilliams Carol Bergen Shirley Houtz Jean Sanders Lois Pilant Bonnie Binggeli Sherril Llalxexs ay Carla Acton DRAMATICS CLLB OFFICERS Douvlas Kuper treasurerg Paul Mitschler vie-- grre:ic'ei.t4 Pernice Harti. stcretaryg Margart Hoffman, pr sdent: Jeannine Johanne' program chairmang Jim Madden, S. FHA Members Develop leadership The Future Homemakers of America organization is designed primarily to prepare those girls en- rolled in home economics to become better nomemakers. In FHA the girls learn to develop leadership and to promote international goodwill. This was the tenth anniversary of the national organization of FHA. At the anniversary meeting on March 20 a large cake with ten candles, symbolizing a wish for each year of the organization, was used as the centerpiece. The meeting was woven around the ten wishes represented by the candles. There were 128 members in the MHS chapter this year from all four classes. The girls may earn Chapter and Junior Degrees. Nine girls-JoAnn Brauchi, Betty Blanke, JoAnn Pralle, Carol Drever, Mary Ann Gleue, Nancy Grauer, Nila Brauchi, Yvonne Allerheiligen and Sara Eddy-received their Junior Degrees this year and wil-l be eligible to work on Chapter Degrees next year. Members attend-ed several out of town meetings. In October, 26 girls went to Clay Center for the fail conference. The district officers were elected at a meeting at Linn in February. Carol Drever was elected as the second vice-president of District Six. Carol attended the national meeting at Chicago in July. Sixty girls attended the sbate meeting at Topeka in March. The FHA also carried on many activities at home. On March 17 they served lunch to the 4-H clubs on 4-H Day. They put on the annual Twirp Dance on March 23 and conducted Twirp Week in the preced- ing days. In a style show for their mothers on May 1 the girls exhibited the clothes they had made. A national FHA project is the beautification of school grounds. Ten rose bushes have been planted on the school grounds by Karen Kloxin in connection with this project. A summer attraction was camp at Goddard. Delma Lohse, Bette Wolff and Cathie Dexter attend- ed camp the last week of May 1955. This included the first NCKL crown won by a MHS team in 14 years, second place trophy at the district tournament at Sabetha. and a third place trophy in the regional at Effingham. - The Bulldogs started the season off right on the home court with -a 56-53 win over Fairbury in a game which still showed the signs of a little football roughness. The first road trip of the season proved fatal as the Beatrice Orangemen sent the Bulldogs home with a 60-51 loss. b Smith Center was ushered into the NCKL by the MHS quintet which showed sufficient spark, though not consistent, to down the R'-dmen. 48-36 at Sinith Center, Lincoln threatened to stop the Bulldogs on the MHS court, but the Red and Black came back in the fourth quarter to finish ahead of the Leopards, 42-35. A fast and furious fourth quarter by the Bulldogs again proved too much for Belleville, as the Bulldogs ran up 21180-62 score before the gun sounded in the Buffs gym, The Bulldogs were again threatened on their home court :vnen-Belfort invaded, but again it was the Bulldogs steadiness under pressure in the closing minutes which pulled them O 3 Ji-.7 XVIII. Minneapolis provided the biggest hurdle in the first half of league play, leading the Bulldogs all the way on their home court. After ci ten day layoff, the Bulldogs came back strong to defeat an ever threatening Beloit team at Beloit by a score of 62-53. The league championship came with the win over Minneapolis, desperate in their fight for a league title tie with the Bulldogs, in the MHS gym with the final st-.ire posted, S3-T3. XVit.h the league title cinched. the Bulldogs invaded Concordia only to be set back by the Panthers, 5-I-50. in a fast and furious game.
