Our school board forms a representative body elected by the citizens for the purpose of considering and acting upon problems of finance, instruction and many other similar matters. Though often confronted by cri- ticism, they create conditions which are desirable for students, instuctors and taxpayers alike. Keeping always in mind the best interests of education, this group gives unselfishly of their time and provides for the commun- ity a school of which it can justly be proud. Our administrators-D. E. Wolgast, superintendent, and R. F. Rowland, principal-carry out the policies of the board, plan for the welfare of the school, and supervise the classroom and extra-curricular activities. To learn through classroom activities, such as those illustrated on the next page, is the purpose of the school. Our classes are guided by the teachers of today, not those of yesterday nor tomorrow. To build strongly for the future, we have activities ln addition to our classrooms-music, clubs, dramatics, athletics. All these needs for progress we have tried to illustrate in this book. That you may enjoy it now, that in the years to come it will bring happy memories of M. H. S. is the sincere wish of the PROGRESS staft. 4 B00kkeeping Che!-nXSU'y , : ! Unleashing her boundless energy in the form of lightning, she tore a series of holes in the gym roof and destroyed the chimney. The class activities that school year were a picnic and a line party. Mother Nature revolted again in September of 1947 with such ex- treme heat that school was dis- missed six afternoons. School was not held several times during the winter because of a gas shortage. On May 6 the Junior- Senior Prom was held featuring the music of Del Weidner and his orchestra. This ended many weeks of hard labor for a great number of juniors who worked on the Southern Garden theme. At last we're seniors, rejoiced 112 students as they started on the last lap of their journey. .Io- Anne McMahon was elected foot- ball queen, Bob Miller and Leonard Pacha were named honorary foot- ball co-captains, and Leonard Pa- cha was elected student body presi- dent during the fall months. Spring came and with it the prom with music furnished by Del Clayton and his orchestra. Baccalaureate came and then on May 23 it happened! Graduation exercises were held with Chancellor Dean W. They stand ready at all times to contribute toward the better- ment of school and community. A large clock and football scoreboard, one of the largest Kay projects, went into use this year and the Kays also made available a new concession stand for the football crowds. The Marysville Chapter of Future Farmers of America with an active membership of 50 boys is a part of the national organiza- tion of more than 300,000 members. Organized for farm boys, it has promoted activities designed to develop rural leadership, create an intelligent choice of farming occupations, encourage cooperative efforts, promote scholarship, establish young men in farming. Opportunities to receive training in attaining these ob- jectives are promoted by agricultural judging events, farm me- chanics contests, public speaking contests, F. F. A. officers leader- ship schools, and individual farming programs completed by vo- cational agriculture students. Farm records completed for 1949 showed a total of 3,233 bushels corn produced, 15,435 pounds of beef, 3,309 pounds of pork, fifteen head of dairy cows and heifers, as major projects by fifty boys. This year's enrollment of fifty boys represents forty-six farm homes scattered in a nine town- ship area surrounding Marysville. F F. A. Several of the games they lost were close games. The Bullpups have shown some very good ball handling this year which makes the prospects of a good team next year look very promising. They are instructed in the fundamentals of basketball by their coach, Homer Hanson. This year was the first time that the Marysville Bulldogs ever entered a holiday tournament. On Decem- ber 29-30 the Bulldog cagers journeyed to Salina to bring back the first place trophy they had won by defeating Marion 31-19 and Sacred Heart of Salina 23-22. The Bulldogs, playing under the mentorship of their new coach, Brice Durbin, started the basketball season in a very good way this year by outscoring their opponents in the first four games they played. By February 6 the Bulldogs have won four league games and lost two. Of all the games played they have won eight and lost five. The Bulldogs are looking forward to another chance to get into the state tournament in which they played last year. - ,f I 'J T 'Q I I' 4 xiefxifl 0 ' ' , J Qi 0 'I 'iv ee fi! S6ag.bU1?!V'TS Ca . Next to fall victim to the Bulldogs were Manhattan, Junction City, Wamego, and Chapman.
