DEDICATION To OUR IMMACULATE QUEEN, VIRGIN OF VIRGINS, we plead, quoting from the prayer of Pius XII for the Marian Year: uenraptured by the splendor of your heavenly beauty and impelled by the anxieties of the world, we Cast ourselves into your arms, 0 Immaculate Mother of Jesus and our Mother Mary, confident of finding in your most loving heart appeasement of our ardent desires and a safe harbor from the tempests which beset us on every side . . . 0 crystal lily of all holiness, captivate our hearts with your heavenly perfumefv On this, the one-hundredth anniversary of the promulgation of the beautiful doctrine of your Immaculate Conception, the Marian Year of Nine- teen-Hundred Fifty Four, we, your loving children, thoroughly inadequately, but with reverence and devotion, dedicate this issue of the Marymountian to You, under your magnificent title, The Im- maculate Conceptionf, With profound humility, and with a cognizance of our inferiority and imper- fections, we beg you to accept our minds, hearts and this publication, as a testimony of our intense love of Thee. Queen conceived without sin, Pray for us! f,W5T22i45iZ??f?feif5ii?Ei2

With Mary . . In Mary . . . By Mary TABLE OF CONTENTS Dedication Faculty Seniors Education Religious Social Advertising FOREWORD Take this woman to be your M otherf, were perhaps the dearest words Our Lord Jesus had spoken. With them, in the person of John the Beloved, He gave His Own Mother, Most Admirable, to be the Mother of His followers, ask- ing them to accept her with open arms and loving hearts. She has fulfilled her Son's request, and has become a Mother dear to all. The students of Marymount have, indeed, taken Mary, the Mother of Christ, to be their own Mother. But, more than that, they have taken Her, their Mother most Venerable, to be their personal patroness, their Mediatrix in hea- ven, their most precious friend. Every facet of their lives-spiri- tual, educational, recreational - is lived with Mary's assistance, in her love of God, by her invocation in our behalf, through Her love of us. Our students do not hesi- tate to call on her in their peculiar problems, nor do they fail to pay her the honor she truly deserves. Living WITH Mary, IN Mary, BY Mary, THROUGH Mary, is undoubtedly the perfect means of existence for it means Living WITH Jesus, IN Jesus, BY Jesus THROUGH Jesus. Following this unique pattern, student life at Marymount has become a blessed, fervent, Marian Litany. Through Mary . . .

RT. REV. WILLIAM J. HAFEY, D.D. Bishop of the Diocese of Scranton In Memoriam His Excellency, the Most Reverend William J. Hafey, who was called to his reward on May 12, 1954, had long been a source of inspiration fo the students of Marymount High. His personal interest in the lives of his flock, and his concern for the spiritual and temporal welfare of his children had won for him a deep, and lasting part of our love. Because he had guarded us against the recurring evils of the world, and had shown us the way to save our souls, all his efforts will be rewarded. His tenureship had been long and fruitful and receptive in the eyes of his Master. May Mary, Queen of Apostles, keep Her son, our Bishop Hafey, near Her and Christ. May his soul rest in peace! Queen of Apostles .
