tune in to THE1980 BATTLEFIELD MARY WASHINGTON COLLEGE FREDERICKSBURG. VIRGINIA 22401 VOLUME 66 What is tuning in? Is it a way of meeting up with life ' s challenges, accepting them, winning? Hey. tune in to what is happening here. We come back in August, revive old friendships, and make new ones. We take a few days off at first to party, and let the work pile up until we think we will never catch up again. We wonder when the lines will end, the construction will end. and we are finally all moved into our rooms. As we orient ourselves and tune in to our lives here, it sud- denly dawns on you, here is your home for the first vear, another vear, or the last year. We walk in spring as spring slowly comes in and warms us. We would lose ourselves in our books and studies if we did not allow ourselves to enjoy each other. We tune our minds with our bodies. One without  . Aft ' the other is empty. Tuning in to all ages and nature — a beautiful world. ' K 4 _ - • HS Hei 1 £ ■ - . The underclass years are times in which we develop spirit, make lasting friends, make deci- sions about our careers and look forward to gradua- tion both anxiously and a little nervously. As each year passes, we come a little closer to the time when we will be on our own. The time will come to move away from our families and friends, yet they will always remain close to us. By taking the time to listen and care, we tuned in to their problems and distance should not affect us. We don ' t have to worry about locking our doors or using cover sheets on exams. The Honor Council reviews the Honor rules to ensure fairness and has attended a convention. The Honor Contacts in each dorm help students to live by the code. The Honor Counselors advise freshmen on the Honor Code, the Judicial Council allows the students to ensure law and order. FAITH IN PRACTICE Several campus organizations persisted in keeping religious spirit alive through fellowship, and service projects. Bible study was a part of most groups as were worship services, such as weekly Mass set up by the Newman Club. Folk singing groups rehearsed and presented songs for campus and community members; through the Campus Christian Community ' s Ministry Through the Arts program the musical, Backpacker ' s Suite, toured local churches. It was the third theatrical endeavor accomplished in the past three years. In the service area, the Baptist Student Union sponsored missionary trips, and the Campus Christian Community sponsored a twenty-four-hour fast in which pledges were donated to CROP. In general, the group members enjoyed fellowship with other members sharing their faith. Several retreats helped members reinforce their faith and examine their position in helping to keep their respective groups going strong. Questions from the audience were answered by a representative from each group. The Young Democrats had three representatives, Jim Emery, Kathy Gilbert, and Dan Steen. The Andersons supporters were represented by Jim Isabell. Vince DiBenedetto tackled the podium for the College Republicans. Many dorms were plastered with literature by active club mem- bers. Both clubs participated in the local campaign headquarters efforts to drop literature in shopping centers, and to operate phone banks. Bringing learning beyond the classroom, the Music Educators National Conference explores careers in music education, and the Organ Guild, in addition to attending recitals in the Richmond and Washington, D.C. areas, also studied different types of organs through lectures, literature, and church visits. With ability like this, the team was able to place fourth in the VIAW Division III Tournament. Tennis is carried through two seasons — fall and spring. The fall season prepares the team for the state championship held in the spring. Coach Hegmann said, All I asked them to do was to play the very best tennis they could play. This seems to have hit home for t he players. The season finished strong and with great hopes for the spring. Not a second ' s hesitation. Coach Roy Cordon stated that the team is one of the most rapidly improving sports program at MWC. For the first time in the young team ' s history the Tide held their opponents to an average of less than two goals p r game. They have also registered three shutouts, which is also a new season high. The team is composed mainly of underclassmen — only one of the twenty players is a senior.
