Due to a struggle in the state legislature over the location of the new normal school, two schools were approved at once. The appropiations bill providing for the construction of normal schools in Fredericksburg and Harrisonburg was signed on March 14, 1908. The site for the Fredericksburg State Normal and Industrial School for Women, as M.W.C. was called then, was another struggle. Finally, the present site was settled upon. The 45.4 acre site was purchased from Captain M. B. Rowe in August 1909. The first session of the normal school began on September 26, 1911. The Dormitory, as Willard was called, contained a dining room, infirmary, laundry, rooms for faculty and students, a reading room, a kitchen, and parlors. The Administration Building (Mo nroe) contained a swimming pool, dressing rooms, a gymnasium, library, classrooms, and manual arts laboratories. The need tor another dormitory was immediate and by 1915 Virginia Hall was completed. The president ' s ofticies, the library ' , the Y.W.C.A., and the infirmary were all moved into this building. In 1926 an addition was put on this building. By 1923 another dormitory was required. This building, Betty Lewis, was used until 1930. It was used again in 1937 and was sold at auction in 1972. Also in 1923, an open-air theater was constructed. It was reconstructed in 1931 and the stage was enlarged. In 1924, the normal school became, by an act of the General Assembly, State Teachers College at Fredericksburg. Money was raised and a Student-Alumnae Building was constructed which consisted of a housed swimming pool. A training school was needed on campus and in 1927 construction of Chandler Hall began. It was to be used for student teachers and it was called College Heights High School. In the next few years, several new buildings went up at the school. The first one was a dining hall, Seacobeck. The ravine which separated it from the rest of the campus was bridged by a brick viaduct. The building consisted of two dining halls and was formally opened in 1931. During the Depression, the college received funds from the Civil Works Administration. It was used to build walks, landscape the grounds, and later to build tennis courts, an open-air swimming pool, and hockey fields. Other improvements consisted of the gates at the entrance at the foot of the hill in 1936, more tennis courts, and a roof garden over the indoor pool. In 1933, with another P.W.A. loan, more construction got underway. Virginia received an addition and three new dormitories were built. This Tri-Unit was completed in 1935. The halls were named Mary Ball Hall, Mary Custis Hall, and Dolly Payne Madison Hall. On March 9, 1938, a bill was signed by Governor James Price allowing State Teachers Colleges in Harrisonburg and Fredericksburg to change their names. Henceforth, the school in Fredericksburg was Mary Washington College. I F 3P ■ WI|B oLm ■ ' r : t A P.W.A. loan made Westmoreland Hall possible. It was built in 1938. Cornell Hall, a dormitory off of Sunken Road, housed students until 1959. George Washington Hall was completed in 1939. The new administration building housed the administrative offices as well as the auditorium which seated 1,624, dressing rooms, the Hall of Mirrors — a basement recreation room, classrooms, a broadcasting studio, and a roof garden. In 1943, Governor C.W. Darden revived the idea of joining Mary ' Washington College with the University of Virginia. On February 22, 1944, the McCue-Randolph bill passed. The College became a liberal arts college for women named Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia. With this merger came many changes at M. W.C. There were new degree requirements, curriculum changed, and admission requirements were more strict. In 1944 the College purchased Brent Hall and in 1946 it purchased Framar. Also in 1946, Brompton was acquired. Trench Hill, a brick residence and seven acres of land across from Brompton, was purchased in 1947 and became a residence hall. 12 Until 1929 there is no record of any men attending Mary Washington. At this time, however. President Combs stated that the school was open to both men and women. In 1930 there were sixteen residential males enrolled. The board refused to accept them. Men, however, continued to attend the summer sessions. In 1941 the library was finally moved from Virginia Hall to the newly completed E. Lee Trinkle Library. Growth in the early 1950s necessitated further construction. A new infirmary, Hugh Mercer Infirmary, was completed in 1951. Two new wings were added to Seacobeck and a new heating plant was constructed. In 1953 the student activities building was added on to the back of the swimming poo l. Ann Carter Lee Hall, as it was named, housed the Terrace Room — a soda fountain, the. college bookstore, classrooms, a dance studio, dressing rooms, a bowling alley, and a two-story ballroom named the Gothic Room. The fine arts center was completed in 1953 also. It consisted of three halls: Dupont, Melchers, and Pollard. The following year two new dormitories, Randolph and Mason Halls were completed. Since the sophomores had lived off campus the previous year, they were placed in these new dorms. Before Dr. Comb ' s death in 1955 he made plans for the construction of a new science building. This building was not completed until 1959 and was named for him. The last improvements at M.W.C. during the 1950s were the construction of Bushnell Hall, another resident hall, in 1959 and the installation of a new telephone system which covered the entire campus. Starting off a new decade, the college added another building. In 1960 Marshall Hall was completed. Construction did not begin again until the mid-sixties. In 1965 Russell Hall was completed and in 1967 the last dormitory to be built to this date, Jefferson Hall, was completed. The last building to be built on campus, Goolrick Hall, the gymnasium, was completed in 1969. With its completion, major remodeling took place in Ann Carter Lee Hall. Seacobeck was remodeled from 1969-1972, and a new sen ' ice building was added next to the golf course in 1972. Fall 1970-71 saw the first permanent male students at M.VV.C, only one hved on campus, however. He lived in Hamlet House. The most recent milestone in the history of the college occurred on April 10, 1972. Governor Linwood Holton signed the bill that separated Mary Washington College from the University of Virginia. Sunken Road. fW rSfr- C Man has sun ' ived even ' thing, and we have only survived it on our optimism, and optimism means faith in ourselves, faith in the ever ' dayness of our lives, faith in our universal qualities, and above all, faith in love. — Edward Steichen There were several people who have served MWC dili- gently for years to whom I could dedicate this anniversary volume. I decided, however, to dedicate it to someone who does and will serve her college, her Lord, and her fellow man. Bobbi Rollins is the spirit of Mary Washington College. She embodies the strength, the drive, the faith, love, and hope that I feel our school stands for. Bobbi is an inspiration to us all — all of us who are tired of life; angry at our neighbor; or unwilling to continue. Bobbi, we need you, we love you, and we thank you for touching our lives. 20 J)f trg6jgU . . . After nineteen years at MWC, Mrs. Chase, head resident of Mary Ball Dorm is retiring. She has been one of the most loyal and dedicated members of the staff at the college, and we will all miss her greatly. Dr. Stablein, professor of Geology, will leave us this year. Dr. Stablein has been one of the greatest loved faculty members at MWC. His students are extremely upset about his leaving and we know he is sad to leave us, too. Mr. Reid has served MWC as the manager of the bookstore for numerous years. He has run a tight ship and kept the bookstore moving during those crowded book sale periods. We thank you, Mr. Reid, and we ' ll miss you. Mr. Jensen, a member of the Religion department, wiU be leaving MWC this year. His students thoroughly enjoyed his classes and are very sad to see him go. To all those members who are leaving us this year or have left during the year, we, the students express our deepest gratitude and appreciation for the years you have spent with us. We will miss you, but we wish you the best of luck and all the good things life has in store for you. Throughout the past seventy ' years the College has been fortunate in the possession of a dedicated and capable faculty. By the time the college opened, the entire faculty had been appointed and was on hand to begin work. President E.H. Russell had begun early to assemble his teaching staff. It is a tribute to President Russell that he was able to assemble such a capable and well-trained group of people for the opening session of a new institution. Although the descriptions of their qualifications in published announcements appear extravagant and flamboyant, the dedicated individuals who began their work that fall presented an impressive background of training and experience in comparision to the typical normal school faculty of the period. The faculty, like the College, has evolved and diversified, yet remains a crucial element of the College experience. Prince B. Woodard President A.R. There were so many things to be done. Early in the fall a selection of school colors had to be made. After much excitement and several ballots, the combination of blue and green was declared the winner. When the name of the college was changed to Mary Washington in 1938, blue and white became the official colors. Since then, academic regalia, school publications, seals and pennants, and other insignia have used the familiar blue and white colors. The first party in the new school was held on Saturday evening, October 7, 1911. President and Mrs. Russell and the members of the faculty received the girls in the dining room, which had been cleared of tables and decorated with palms and ferns. Dormitory life was strictly regulated by the sound of a bell, from the call to rise in the morning until the signal for lights out at night. Even from the earliest days there was an approved calling list. Only men who had been vouched for by written recommendations were allowed to visit the students on the hill. The days and hours of calling were carefully specified, and only entertainment in the parlor or on the walkways surrounding the buildings was permitted. Young men who transgressed the regulations were put on the blacklist and deprived of calling upon students. n tmavxnxn Banjamin Early Stephen Disraeli Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing. One began to realize that he w ill soon be out of school, and this tended to cause moments of day dreaming. Seniors celebrated this glorious event in February. 100th night wras held February 1 in Seacobeck basement. Dancing and drinking lasted all evening. But the really big evening was 78th night, which was sponsored by the sophomore class, and was kept a secret until February 26. The sophomores planned a very enjoyable evening for their sister class, and the dreams of graduation crept closer and closer. Ixllh nnh the Tinhs To entertain the Fall Formal crowd this year. Class Council sponsored a concert on November 10. Willie Ninninger a folk singer from New York performed. Once again, the Split Ends warmed up the audience. It was an evening of enjoyable music and humor. (3lnt0rnatt0nal tgl]t The Ballroom was filled for the anriual multi-national festival. Each year the language clubs get together to produce an evening filled with songs, dances, and foods of the various countries. Members work for weeks to master some of the old time favorites: the can-can; Spanish singing and dancing; German dancing and Italian singing. This year the Russian club had a unique presentation of poetry reading. The foods were tasty and sold quickly. The participants seemed to enjoy the show as much as, if not more than, the audience. ■■■■I i ..■ B rf ft ' 4 M mS m mm. H| i L K ' ' 1 jj fl 1 . ' . It began with a picnic down by the river and a parade down Campus Drive follo ved. The weekend was topped off by the Best Party in the County and will be remembered as such by the fluorescent orange T-shirts sold by Class Council. 70 Peg Partg Come one, come all to the weekly entertainment at MWC — a Keg Party. Used as one of the greatest fund raisers, one cannot leave MWC without attending a keg party. Loaded with Marines and frats from UVA, many girls have found enjoyable dates at these affairs. Others, however, find them very stale and unentertaining. Nonetheless, a keg party is definitely a unique college experience. JIfbIb ®rtps Dr. Pinchsmidt ' s biology classes visit the river to collect samples. Throughout the year, trips are sporisored by various departments or classes. The Geomorphology class annually takes a trip north. Biology and Geology classes visit nearby rivers and rock quarries. English, Classic, and Language classes occasionally visit plays in Washington, D.C., or at neighboring colleges. Students enjoy these breaks from routine and professors find them to be valuable learning experiences. 72 Dr. Johnson ' s General Biology Lab took a trip outside to inspect the foliage. Dr. Bowen ' s Geomorphology class searches for the Lost River in West The Geomorphology class also visited the cokeworks in Ohio on their Virginia. four day trip. Dr. Byrd ' s Geology class gathered water samples while cooling off. A contest was sponsored by the AAA to choose MWC ' s first woMAN of The Year. The contestants displayed various talents from singing and playing the piano to stripping. The contestants as well as the audience were excited and enthusiastic. The evening was enjoyed by all and was a great success for the AAA. PJmter tt in Hanuarg anta (S nmt to ®ohin Bringing the Christmas spirit to the students, the Christmas Bazaar once again gave us an opportunity to Christmas shop, visit, and eat. The annual event sponsored by the Class Council was, once again, a great success. Contributions made by students, clubs, and community businesses were displayed in booths. One could have his fortune told, his picture taken with Santa, or throw a wet sponge to release frustrations. Leather items, Christmas ornaments, plants, needlework, and many other items could be purchased. The Christmas music floated throughout the campus and everyone joined in the fun. Cathy Smith admitted people to the ballroom for the Bazaar. ' ' s.k s All decorated for Christmas, this group of girls have their picture taken with Santa. The buildings were open for tours, a special German Oom-pah band toured Seacobeck, and a dinner and dance were scheduled at the Sheraton. Parents were invited to hear President Woodard speak and present Intermediate Honors. Another event of the weekend was a dinner at Framar for parents of the residents. Occasionally one can find MWC students in the most dreaded place on campus — the library. Many long nights have been spent there by some, while others avoid the place and visit it only when absolutely necessary. Mrs. Weinbrecht and the library staff are ' always willing to assist the students in any way they can. The library now offers short courses in term paper research, use of the library, and other areas in which students demonstrate need. The staff often coordinates sessions with various classes to help in individual areas. The library frequently sponsors speakers: either MWC professors or visitors from other schools. They also publish a newsletter, News and Views from Trinkle, which lists and describes newly released books, MWC professors ' works, and newly acquired materials. orm ICtfe 1948 82 83 1934 Carousel The spring production of the Drama Department was the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic, Carousel. This enchanting musical was a huge success and well received by the student body. The leading female part of Carrie Pipperidge was played by Valinda Feather, with Sarah McCracken as Julie Jordan and Dianne Quinn as Nettie Fowler. The male leads of Billy Bigelow and Enoch Snow were played by Rob Powell and Kevin Havens, respectively. kWI Re K 86 Peer Gynt the fall drama production, was directed by Neil Howard. Cathy Smith and Doug Lorber were cast in the leading roles. The play covered Peer Gynt ' s entire life in which he searches for himself. He finally does find himself and returns to his girl in the mountains. He has to undergo many trials including one with the trolls. His girl waits patiently for him to return because she knows he will. The performance was excellently done and received laudatory reviews. Al umnt IB77 ' 7S The M VC Alumni Association began a busy year in the spring of 1977 with Homecoming Weekend. The weekend was filled with activities for all returning alumni. A luncheon at Brompton, reunions of individual classes, and tours of the college and Fredericksburg filled the weekend. The special event of the weekend was the Golden Club ' s anniversarv party. In the fall Oktoberfest, Parent ' s Weekend, began another season ' s activities. Parents were invited to the campus for a weekend to become acquainted with their children ' s school. Other activities of the year included fundraising for the Regent ' s Scholarship Prograin; the publishing of MWC Today, the alumni newsletter; and the annual DVIR, this year ' s being Dean Rusk. Mrs. Carson, the coordinator of the association ' s activiries, kept the members active and informed throughout the school year. aobtn 3)am In order to display the artistry of numerous MWC students, Wooden Jams are held throughout the year. Auditions are held and usually, the competition is great. The crowds are usually enthusiastic and the concerts are well attended. P P |l usk peafea on future Mr. Rusk spoke on the future of the nation at his main address on November 13. As their seventh Distinguished Visitor in Residence, the MWC Alumni Association brought Dean Rusk to our campus. From November 11-14, Mr. Rusk visited our campus and the City of Fredericksburg. He was entertained at the Alumni House and at Brompton. He visited several classes so as to speak more closely wfith the students. On November 13, Mr. Rusk gave his main address, The Future is Already Here. Mr. Rusk outlined what he felt were the major problems faced by our nation and possible solutions. Following the address, a reception was held in Jefferson Dorm. Mr. Rusk and President Woodard chatted during the reception held at Brompton. Mr. and Mrs. Rusk got a chance to rest a minute and grab a bite to eat at the receptions held in their honor. mntk Culture Peek Annually, the AAA sponsors activities for Black Culture week. This year the calendar was especially star-studded. On Sunday, February 12, a Gospel Jamboree was held in GW. The Virginia Union University Choir, the Buelah Men ' s Ensemble, Newsights Gospel Choirs, and the Gospel Harmonettes sang. Ivene Washington, Se cretary-Treasurer of the National Afro- American Association spoke on the accomplishments of blacks in America. A dance was held at the Crystal Lounge at which Ujima played. Vinie Burrows presented Walk Together Children , a history of blacks in America. Monarr, an artist from Haiti, displayed her works for the campus community during the week. Congressman Fauntroy was scheduled to speak Monday evening but due to the weather was unable to come. A disco was held on Saturday and soul food was served Wednesday night in the dining hall. Congressman Fauntroy ' s address was delayed due to inclement weather. Vinie Burrows presented her one-woman show portraying the history of blacks Prmg (SInstglits Chuck Robb, son-in-law of former President Lyndon B. Johnson, came to our campus in the spring on his campaign trail. Robb, a Democrat, sought the position of Lieutenant-Governor of Virginia and easily defeated his opponent in the November election. MWC students were impressed by Robb ' s capability, good looks, and mild manner. Dr. Tao-tai Hsia, a distinguished scholar from the Far-Eastern Law Division of the Library of Congress, spoke on November 9 as part of the Trinkle Library Lecture series. Dr. Hsia, a professor of law at the George Washington University Law School, spoke with great insight on the topic: Can There Be Peaceful Coexistence Between the People ' s Republic of China and Taiwan After U.S. Recognition? Even ' one is eager to see old friends and enjoy the beautiful fall weather. Not only do departments have picnics but, as you can see here, the Spanish and French houses combine for their annual festive afternoon. Freshmen from Randolph also regrouped to see friends from whom they had been separated. Picnics have become a habit at Mary Washington. 96 wm u Kkh ' ■y ' $1|| m Hb «pp .«o «- . ,-.... The tea, somewhat of a tradition, tends to bring back moments of the past at MWC. It faintly resembles the teas held by Mrs. Bushnell while she was Dean of Students. Residents of Ball, Mrs. Chase, and the faculty all seemed to have thoroughly enjoyed the occasion. The highlight of any junior ' s year is the ordering of his or her ring and attending Ring Dance. Rings were ordered from J. Jenkins Company in November. Samples were on display in the library as in past years. Ring presentation and Ring Dance took place in the spring semester. The band was Sandcastle. A wonderful time was had by all. Rings were placed on display in the library to give students the opportunity to choose just the right one. On October 13, representatives from numerous businesses, industries, educational systems, and governmental agencies gathered in ACL Balboom. They spent the entire day answering students ' questions. Career Day, an annual event sponsored by the Placement Office, continues to aid students in finding jobs. The Office also gives students access to listings of job opportunities and arranges for interviews on campus. Many employers sent representatives to MWC ' s Career Day held in October. A student questioned the representative from the Virginia Employment Commission concerning the job market. Paul Hawke and others converse with business representatives. Representatives from the UVA School of Nursing talked with a student. Many students from MWC continue at the Nursing School. Jeff John inquires about job openings in the field of physics and math. 100 101 J P dontES t0 Seacobeck received a face lift and a change of make-up this year. The traditional preparation of meals switched to having the food prepared by ARA Food Services. Students were offered numerous entrees, frozen yogurt, and a wider selection of beverages, and other goodies. Although there was much repitition in the food, most students found the change satisfying. The building also underwent repairs. A new rug and furnishings were placed in the freshly painted Dome Room. Repairs were done on walls and ceilings of all the rooms. 102 Campaign posters are found all over campus during the early fall and again before school closes in the spring. Most candidates find those posters hung by A.C.L. to be the most effective form of communication. Although many students worked diligently to prepare attractive materials, most students did not notice them. The lingering apathy of the past few years continued at MWC and could be seen in the low voter turnout in each election. Efforts to stir interest were generally ineffective, although no reasons for the lack of it could be pinpointed. 104 JVrt x pln th Dance Kaleidoscope was presented by the dance students on November 10. The program consisted of original student choreography which was most ingenious. Miss Rosemary Herman made available to the students and community her collections of Folk Art of Mexico and children ' s books in foreign languages. These exhibits lasted a week and proved very enlightening. Pnberclass The first session at MWC began with a total enrollment of one hundred and ten students. By 1913, one hundred and thirty-one students were enrolled here. Over the years the ervrollment has grown by leaps and bounds and has come from a wider area. Some of these included the Christmas Bazaar, keg parties, and concerts. The officers were responsible for contacting the representative from Jenkins Sons for ordering class rings, as well as organizing Ring Presentation and Junior Ring Dance. 145 § nttors Ollass of 197B The class of 1913 numbered thirty-two graduates, all from Virginia, who had completed the two-year normal school program. The first issue of the Battlefield, was produced in the spring of 1913, when the first two-year graduating class received their diplomas. Pictures, a list of activities, and a tribute in limerick style appeared for each of the graduates. All were from Virginia, most of them from the Northern Neck or Piedmont sections of the state. The motto of the class was, appropriately, Live on the Heights. The class of 1978 numbers three hundred and ninety-eight. The students came from as far across the nation as California and from overseas as well. These students have completed the four-year program at our liberal arts college. Not only have the students come from more distant locations, but the class of 1978 also includes men. This marks a definite change from the class of 1913. 148 Beth Ackley Political Science Sherrie Adams Dance Stephanie Ailsworth Psychology and Religion Debbie Akers Sociology 150 Jean Alexander Biology and Chemistry Karen Allen Political Science and History Terry Anderson Biology Annette Amendolia History and Sociology Denise Arundell Biology Sharon Akins Biology Melissa Baisch History Kimberley Barlow History 152 gf ' , HB ' lSSH HJ K m S St SwSt. B ' n S .,.J . iv; ' Jx: ' Terry Barnes Speech Pathology Linda Barstein Chemistry Lisa Barthello History Kathy Beecher Economics C. Announcements were ordered in November and arrangements for Graduation were set. On May 12, it was arranged for the class to have access to the Fredericksburg Country Club for the entire day. A band was hired for an evening of dancing following the dinner. The sponsor, Mr. Dale Brown, worked closely with the officers to make all the necessary arrangements. At the meetings seniors nominated students for Who ' s Who. A committee of students and professors reviewed the names and made final selections. Also decided at one of the meetings was the speaker for Graduation. Art Buckwalt gladly accepted our invitation to speak. 1958 Sports Competitive sports began with the first basketball game played outside our own gymnasium on January 30, 1915. The school won a victory over the YMCA team in Richmond, described as one of the best girls ' basketball teams in the state. All students were considered members of the Athletic Association. During the session of 1911-1912 it began the annual spring Field Day, with a trophy cup awarded for the greatest number of points in basketball, tennis, and Field Day events. Since those days the name of the Athletic Association has changed many times, and today remains an important part of campus life — the Recreation Association. In conjunction with the physical education department, the Recreation Association sponsored honor teams in various sports and more recently, sponsored the annual Devil-Goat Day festivities. Today sports at MWC have grown to include teams for both men and women. The most recent additions to the sports schedule have been men ' s soccer and men ' s tennis. fci 1934 226 P5 C PoIlEBbaU — Pinning Reason Cincy Drury, Leslie Freeman, Mary Pat Gallagher, Cincy Harris, Ivy Martin, Jeanne McTeague, Barb Mosely, Amanda Parker, Glennis Riegert, Patty Shillington, Mamie Snyder, Kathy Shelton, Vicki Willis This year ' s volleyball team again had a winning season. The season was tough, though. The team came out with nine wins and seven losses. Although the team suffered from lack of spectator support, as most MWC teams do, the team members were very enthusiastic. ocfceg Reason — Surprise The hockey team had a surprisingly good season. With the new coach and an inflow of fresh talent the team put together a strong defense. The members felt that they had improved and the season was a definite improvement over the last. i 1— ? 1 I i).m ' Af : % First Row: L to R; Liz Hammond, Betsy Bowen, Teddi Cassel, Janet de la Concepcion, Coach Kintzing; Second Row: L to R: Eva Bums, Trish Cooley, Chris Hruby, Joanna Markussen, Barb Heyl, Joanne Roan, Eve Baker, Montine Jordan, manager ? « tn ©rgantze otcev ' Qlcam First Row: L to R: Mike Mazzola, Parker Curlee, Bruce Williams, John Shrum, Mike Kelly, Geoff Beardall, Scott Schaw, Doug Dolton; Second Row: L to R: John Forbes, John Schumacher, Victor Yostrop, John Bartenstein, Greg Miller, Mark Fortney, Bob Mooney; Third Row: L to R: Coach Roy Gordon, Pat Thompson, Dana Aladj, Charles Chico Rodrigues, Alexis Smith, Pat Miller, Linda McCarthy, Manager For the first time in history, MWC had a soccer team. The team was organized this year with great enthusiasm from the men on campus. A very busy beginning season kept the men on their toes and in shape in the fall semester. There is no doubt that with the increasing male population here at MWC, that soccer is here to stay. ic ntvas t MWC lacrosse had a good season dispite the fact that they lost their star scorer in mid-season. The team then had to reorganize their offense and learn to work together. Scoring then became a team effort. A lot of new players, mainly freshmen, aided the team effort. As far back as 1938 the college had a dance band, a marching band, and a small orchestra. Today, however, things have changed. In the fall of 1971, the College-Community Or- chestra was formed by a small group of students and Fredericksburg residents. The premier concert was held in De- cember 1971. The orchestra began with only 34 musicians, but has grown to a well- balanced group of 80. The two-concert season has now been expanded to four annual concerts. Special concerts have included a Bicentennial Concert, and Inaugural Concert, for the installation of the college president, and a Pops Concert. The Chatham Orchestra Institute of MWC was initiated in the summer of 1976. The two week work session is held each year in June and July and is open to musicians from school age through adult. Whip; Mary Pat Gallagher, Vice-President of the Senate The Student Government Association was first organized on December 1, 1914. It consisted of representatives from each class. From the very beginning, th-e Association played an important role in college life. Its purpose was sited as being seeing that rules are carried out. SG A through the Joint Council and the Student Council was the disciplinary body for the college. Only through action of these two councils could the restrictions against campusing (going off campus without permission) be lifted. The organization also sought to interpret college regulations and provide a forum for changes to be aired before proposing them to the administration. In 1968-69 revisions in the SGA Constitution created the Senate. The Senate became the legislative branch of the Association. At least one representative from each dormitory, one for each additional fifty students, and representatives of the day students made up the body. The name of the Association was changed in 1970-71 to Student Association to show more clearly how much of campus life the organization covered. Recently, issues that have faced SA have been the extention of visitation hours, the institution of co-ed dorms, issues concerning the dining hall, infirmary, and other aspects of the college community. The Welfare Committee handles matters concerning student life and welfare. Recent issues have been concerning the dining hall and infirmary. The Finance Committee deals with the Senate budget. It makes allocations to the student organizations on campus. Special Projects handles issues not covered by other committees. This year it has assisted with the overload situation, acted in an advisory function with course evaluations, and attempted to get dorm hours extended at the end of exams. The Rules and Procedures Committee handles student body elections and Senate elections. It watches over Senate procedure. Publicity is charged with publicizing Senate activities. Finally, Student Organizations and Procedures screen applicants for and makes appointments to the student-faculty committees. These committees are designed to give the student body a voice on important matters such as curriculum, library, and admissions. Recent ac- tivities of the club include participation in International Night, an annual taco and Christmas party, invitation of speakers, money raising activities, and trips to Spanish res- taurants. The Spanish Club was organized under Dr. Stuart De- nslow around 1940-1941. From 1940 to the early 1950 ' s an annual Spanish fiesta was held in the spring and repeated on alumnae weekend. These fiestas were initiated by Dr. Louis J. Cabrera, a native of Puerto Rico, who joined the faculty as professor of Spanish in 1943. These programs usually featured Spanish songs, dances, dramatizations, and a pseudo bullfight. Among the outstanding fiestas were an operetta on January 29, 1944, Una Comedia Musicale in 1945, in which all members participated, and Espana Algre on March 5, 1947, a gala of Spanish and Latin Ameri- can songs and dances. The basement of Monroe Hall was decorated to represent Cabrera ' s Cave in 1948. There were bullfights, songs, dances, and the play Delia, and Car- los in the Cave. In celebration of Cervante ' s birthday, there was a pageant in 1949 in which scenes from Don Quixote and The Cave of Salamanca were presented. Other year ' s activities included trips to the Pan American Union, pro- grams featuring speakers and movies on Spanish-speaking countries, and exhibitions of Spanish dancing. In keeping with its purpose of encouraging interest in the French language and culture, the French Club sponsored many campus activities such as International Night, Study Abroad Night, a Cheese Party, and caroling. The International program included dancing the can-can, singing folk and popular songs, cooking French specialties, and making decorations. After several rehearsals, the Club also sang French carols at the home of the French professors. These and other activities made the student body aware of the French Club this year. r 1 1 Zi , ' ■■• ' ;lC JH -J Club Officers; President, Sue Giovannetti; Vice-President, Noreen Grimes; Secretary, Margie Camlin; Treasurer, Eileen Wiles; Publicity Chairman, Amee Carmines.
