DEDICATION: To the spirit of Mary Washington College: Let us remember your charm, your tradition, and your dreams. Why are we here? Why did we come to college? Sure, a lot of us came to meet people, to joke about getting that good of M.R.S. But didn ' t we come for a reason? Math, biology, history, music . . . Most of us came to learn about a particular subject, something we are interested in, or thought we were interested in. And in learning about those basic concepts we found others. — we found people whose interests matched ours, discovered leaders to help us expand our minds — we found books that proved to us that we ' ll never know enough about the world, this planet, this universe. Why did we come ' . ' How did we make it through each day, through each night? In thinking about ourselves, we realized that college helped us to know ourselves. We learned so much since that first night in August. When we all listened to explanations about visitation, the honor system. When we learned other things, too. The shock or acceptance in learning that the girl down the hall already had contraceptives. The realization that Mother prepared the roast beef differently. The relief in laughter with friends. The discovery of our minds ' expansion as we learned to write a paper. The agony of failure, the surprise of success. Knowing that our awareness had expanded to make us concerned about what it is to live, to care, to be. Thoughts take up most of our minds. Yet when we try to remember, Thoughts fade away as we dream. What will we remember DO YOU REMEMBER . LAUGHING WATCHING THINKING STUDYING j 23S35S5BS _j 1- A How did we make it through each day? I 3 3 1 mmm i u ..III r kiihi URV ! i r-i C . • ' The Campus, Will It Change? PRINCE WOODARD SPEAKS OUT . . . About MWC The most interesting thing I find about being President of the college is the association I have with the students and the faculty. As president of the college I attempt to coordinate and give leadership to the various phases of the college, blending together the academic, the financial, the student life, and the facilities into an efficient and productive operation. I serve as the ministrative arm of the Board of Visitors, which sets the policies of the college, and to impliment the policies which the Board adopts. About goals 1 don ' t think there is any mis-understanding by the students of what the goals of the Administration and Faculty are. I think there is a gap, but only a fundamental one. Students going only four or less years to Mary Washington don ' t have the broad overview that the Administra- tion and Faculty, who work here 24 hours a day for several years, have of the College and its goals. The difference lies in the roles each have, and their functions, which is no criticism of either side. About students and faculty We have a team effort here at Mary Washington; the students facul- ty, and administration work together more than in any other College. There are points in time when we have our differences, but more often we work together. A. Ray Merchant. Vice President James H. Croushore, Dean of the College Edward V. Allison. Most important, as in any journalistic work, I must present facts and figures of any and all types in a honest and unbiased manner. Interpre- tive reporting is valuable, but only so long as it is interesting and accurate. It is in the area of interpretive reporting where I set my major goal. In my first edition this year, I gave the readers of the MWC a statement of my responsi- bilities to them. Most important was my pledge to accurately interpret hap- penings of interest to all sects of the campus community without biased in- terjections. My second largest goal con- cerned a change in general appearance and content of The Bullet. Editors must deal with large sums of money, meet time-consuming and frightening dead- lines, and maintain an often large staff. Students involved in publications attain a sense of accomplishment and a sense of comradeship by working hard to produce professional newspapers, liter- ary magazines, and yearbooks. These students face countless dilemas in attempting to report the news. Deter- mining what is news, what will appeal to readers, and how much to edit can create controversy as well as the devel- opment of responsible expression of opinion by both student reporters and others. W1 V 4 Willard Recreation Association Every MWC student is automatically a member of the Recreation Associa- tion. In recent years, the prestige and popularity of the organization has declined, according to President Richie Hasty. After looking through old record books, I found that up until 1969, the R.A. was a dominant organi- zation on MWC ' s campus. Richie hopes that next year more students will become involved in the or- ganization. Field days, tournaments, and awards are planned for the up- coming semester. Says Richie, My own hopes and enthusiasm have been set back because of the inability of the R.A. to affect and stimulate as many students as it once did. It is my con- tinued hope that next semester will prove profitable and encouraging to the R.A. and its future at Mary Wash. Back row: Phyliss Quinn, Cathy Krooks, Karen Mann. Kass Roulet. This was not a new and revolutionary idea since the Student Association introduced the proposal in 1972. However, any real work towards investigating such possibilities was not done until the 1974-1975 school year. At that time, students were polled to de- termine their opinions towards visitation. Because attitudes proved overwhelmingly in favor of 23-hour visitation, the student Senate urged their constituencies to write the Board of Visitors to consider the new pro- posal. Roughly 1 200 letters displayed student activism and cohesiveness rarely seen at MWC. Lack of response from the Board of Visitors caused MWC students to orsanize and Rally on Ball Circle. Can You Believe We ' re Seniors? | ' f C% Cj Underclass 202 wr 1 •  •  r e _ y V The Journey of Jaded Juniors A handful of juniors found March 1975 to be the most exciting period of their sophmore year. In this month the junior counselors were chosen. After filling out an application the can- didates went before a panel to answer ques- tions and then waited in suspense. On March 27, the same night class officers were an- nounced, junior counselors were named and received red carnations. After a few months in their positions one junior counselor said, It ' s the best job to have; the freshmen are great. Of course, every junior counselor thought their freshmen were the best. These juniors had the pleasure of serving at the Brompton dessert and in giving academic advising to the freshmen. The highlight of one ' s junior year is ring presentation in the spring. However, rings were ordered on November 4 and took a big chunk out of everyone ' s spending money. Costs soared because of the rising price of gold. It ' s probably the biggest expense of the year, a junior grumbled. On the night of ring presentation, Feb- ruary 5, Mortar Board members were an- nounced and President Woodard presented the rings. Meanwhile, sophomores and freshmen were busy decorating the Junior ' s rooms. Furniture was moved out or rearranged, doorknobs were greased, beds were filled with jelly and the rooms piled high with crumpled newspapers. The following Saturday night the MWC class of ' 77 attended their ring dance at the Sheraton Motor Inn in Fredericksburg. Besides all the extracurricular ac- tivities that came in the junior ' s year, there were classes and revela- tions for a lot of people. Junior year is the worst year. I am tired . . . exhausted . . . worn out! By their third year at MWC, most peo- ple had their basic requirements out of the way and had begun concen- tration on their majors. Junior year means finally getting into our majors. I hate it!! Most juniors, as did everyone, looked forward to the weekends. The overall feeling of the class was, however, It means one more year till I get the hell out of here. Some juniors were not too excited about leaving, though. They described their junior year as, PANIC! Not because you ' re a junior but because you realize in another year you ' ll be out of this place and on your own!  .- -fef - 9f h- f ? Sophomores had no great event awaiting them and found it hard to keep going through the year. One sophomore said, ... it ' s twice as much worry as last year. Characteristic of the second year in college is the sophomore slump. Before September was over one girl sighed. I have the slump, I think. I really do! Some sophomores managed to get their minds off of their troubles by babysitting as often as possible. One student, when asked if she looked forward to the week- ends said, Weekends: 1 ? I ' m waiting for summer!!! Most sophomores were bringing to a close the two years of basic requirements and had to decide on their majors. Sopho- more year is having an ulcer. I «i i This was also the year when many students decided whether to remain here at MWC or transfer out. Many students in- terested in medicine sent applications to UVA and MCV. One girl ' s advice was Get the hell out while the getting ' s good!! Others, however, didn ' t find MWC so unbearable and looked forward to their junior year here. I just can ' t wait to get my ring and go to the dance. It helps me to make it through this year to think about it. It ' s not that bad. It ' s the same old thing of going to classes. Sophomores found MWC easier outside of classes this year. I get around easier this year. It ' s the turning point. Life on campus was more relaxed for most every- one. Sophomores got more into the swing of things and became more active in the clubs and opportunities on campus. v-  ia gr Cathy Robertshaw, Robbie Earle L-R Sarah Metzel, Melissa H unman. Marli Venn Firsts for Fledgling Freshmen The latter part of August 1975 was a new and somewhat frightening experience for the freshmen. For many it was their first long stay away from home. Some saw this as a great opportunity while others suffered from homesickness. It meant ad- justing to a completely new way of life. Freshmen year has to be the worst. Most freshmen shared this girl ' s feelings toward the required Writing Composition course, Writing Workshop is a pain. Freshmen were on their own and had an opportunity to attend their first mixers and keg parties. One girl thought a mixer was when you bring your own and MWC supplies the mixers. Living in one of the many freshmen dorms was an experience that would never be forgotten. Freshmen engaged in water battles, papered the halls, dropped water balloons, went singing to the other dorms, and played other pranks that sometimes were ended with hall offenses. Unlike, previous classes, this year ' s freshmen were not even surprized by the annoying buzzer of their first fire drill. They waited at least a minute before even opening a door. I didn ' t know what was going on. I thought it was my roommate ' s alarm clock. I thought ' If Denise doesn ' t turn that thing off, I ' m gonna beat her head in. ' i Wfts rr Then of course, one has to get used to the Sylvania Factory odor and the townies and Marines cruising the campus. Fredericksburg must lead the nation in townies. I ' ve never seen so many! The annual dessert at Brompton was held on August 27. New students visited the president ' s home and enjoyed a dessert on the lawn. The class of ' 79 had a special treat when they visited Brompton. Pres- ident Woodard ' s French foreign exchange student stood in the receiving line and kissed each girl as she came through the line. If that ' s what they do in France, do it over here! Freshmen felt that Mary Washington did not live up to their expectations of college life, though because of the lack of activities, the lack of school spirit and unity, and because of the sparse male resi- dential population. Remember when it opened new doors, to make everything possible. Remember when we faced the world, ready to take the giant step, afraid, yet willing, reluctant, yet eager. Remember? We ' re reminded of years past when 76 meant something besides 1976. 1 V ' . m ■ . -- ' S fc L ' ? HH9 This book, designed for the campus community of Mary Washington College, was created so that each person can dedicate the publication to someone he loves and appreciates individually. I personally would like to dedicate this book in remembrance of the many friendships I have made at Mary Wash. These include my roommate Judy, my good friends here: Patti Jo, Deb, Miff, Lundy, Dru, Cindy, Kim, Anne, Christy, Joy, and the music department; and some friends who have left: Peg and Stan, Gail, Rosemary, and Lina. Additionally, Mrs. Hamer, Mr. Thomas, and Mr. Bailey hold a special place in my memories. All of these people have much to give and are just a few of the many people on this campus to touch others. Many thanks and appreciation go to my wonderful staff who made this book a re- .ality . Further acknowledgements include Mr. Lamph, Mr. Dervin, Mr. Lutterbie, and the Office of Information Services. At this time, I would like to recognize the superb workmanship of Hunter Publishing Company and their representative, Jim Ellis. I would also like to thank Stevens Studios, the Dance Department, and Mr. Carter for contributing many pictures. Lastly, I would like to dedicate this book to my parents who have given me so much. --Hzl n
