DEDICATION Insight, energy, curiosity, love and purpose — the essential elements of today ' s vital woman — are successfully fused bv the spark of involvement. Whether in family, occupation, or community service, the accelerated pace of the times demands the vigor- ous participation of the modern wom- an. In each of these areas, Laura V. Sumner exemplifies the vital woman. Wife, mother, professor of the Classics and numismatist of note, Mrs. Sumner well merits the many honors bestowed upon her through the years. A Phi Beta Kappa, a life member of the Archeological Insti- tute of America and the American Philological Association, Mrs. Sum- ner has furthered the cause of aca- demics on campus with the establish- ment of a chapter of Eta Sigma Phi, the National Classics Honorary So- ciety. A popular professor, Mrs. Sumner counsels majors in Latin and the Classics. Sparked bv her engaging personalitv and livelv anecdotes, her Greek and Roman Art and Arche- ology classes always attract many more students than Monroe twenty- one can possibly accommodate. As an administrator, Mrs. Sumner donned the cap of Director of the 1968 Summer Session and smoothly guided its course from her office in G.W. Participating in the activities of the Fredericksburg community, Mrs. Sumner has the distinction of being the first woman to serve on the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Com- merce. Elected to the City Council in 1960 and re-elected in 1968, she has acted as the chairman of the Health and Welfare Committee. In 1962 Mrs. Sumner was honored as First Lady of Fredericksburg . Recognizing her service to the col- lege and the community and acknowl- edging her as a model for future vital women, we dedicate the 1969 Battle- field to Laura Voelkel Sumner.
