FOREWORD W ' c knew that the world was undergoing drastic changes. W ' c knew that decisions concerning our careers and our mar- riages must be made for the present and not for the future. We felt the growing emphasis on militarism and inventions for destruction. We could not, as die! jur parents, call ourselves the lost generation, for we saw only too clearly a road marred by aimless detours and destruction ; we knew that this road must be taken with a strong sense of direction and with pur- pose. Certainty was essential, and we tried to find it in a world of mechanical ingenuity and ethical dissolution. We found in Mary Washington College in 1951-52 what many others found in similar colleges and universities, a chance to think, a chance for service, and the opportunity for growth. Gay, young, and idealistic, we dreamed of a world revived by our enthusiasm, and we faced the present with laughter, and thought of the future without fear. The Battlefield at press produced diverse emotions in staff members; Joy in a long task ended, regret in another year past.
