Whether it be history, -— whether it be autobiography, whether it be idle tale, the Battle- field staff accepts the privilege of presenting this volume. The time of this narrative — in the Year of Our Lord one thousand nine hundred and thirty-nine . . . The place — a gentle old town, SCENIC, fraught with rich memories of events in a nation ' s history . . . a col- lege that bears the name of a great lady . . . The characters — a veritable GALAXY OF PERSONALITIES ... a hundred learned ones who gladly teach a thousand who would learn, who sagely guide that thousand who would have their yet pliant lives shaped into things of fineness . . . The plot— this book has a complex plot ... the ACTIVITIES of the thousand . . . their clubs, their classes, their moments of what it pleases them to call fun . . . (but who is a humble reviewer to interpret the souls of a thousand?) . . .
