Such was the theme song of more than three hundred girls in the fall of ' J5 as they said good-bye and boarded the trains and buses for Fredericksburg. College— at last their dream of dreams would really become a reality. From north, east, south, and west they came — jolly, happy Freslimen. Quickly they found their rooms, the roommates, and de- cided what to take and what not to take. The bell system soon became integrated with their routine of living and soon they were considered members of the great F. S. T. C. family. After nights and nights of freshman training, they became educated to the rules and regulations and ready to become an organization. Maree Sweeney, Virginia Anderson, Betty Boggs, and Miriam Carpenter were chosen to lead the class through its first eventful year. Freshman Commission was organized as the little Y. W. C. A. Cabinet, and Helen Hyde was chosen as leader of this group. Through the year the class of ' 39 appeared before the stu- dent body in pop programs, at vespers, devotionals, sports, and finally the Freshman Benefit. For days and weeks afterwards this was the talk of the campus. The hand of time soon ushered in the month of May, and the freshmen realized that it was daisy time. How energetic and happy they were as off to the daisy fields they went, re- turning soon with arms filled with the delight of spring. Soon the daisy chain was completed and proudly they raised it upon the shoulders of the sophs. Nine months passed by, and now they are proud sophomores going forward to three or more years of happiness. cJke Jjaliieflela Miss Grace Taylor Sponsor Sophomore Class OFFICERS Elizabeth Trimble President Irene Blasdel Vice-President Edith Weeks Secretary Lillian Boswell Treasurer 45 •9 cJ ke JjallLefieLo SOPHOMORE CLASS MILDRED MOORE ASHER West Point, Virginia MARY ELIZABETH BALDWIN Phoebus, Virginia DOROTHY BALLANCE Hickory, Virginia GRACE BEANE MisKiMON, Virginia MARZIE BENNETT Walterboro, South Carolina LOUISE BLACKMAN Selma, North Carolina IRENE COMPTON BLASDEL SUARTHMORE, PENNSYLVANIA LILLIAN BOSWELL Ballston, Virginia cJke JjaHLefieLa SOPHOMORE CLASS VIRGINIA MAE BOYD Franklin, Virginia HELEN BRAD SHAW Franklin, Virginia SPARKS BREWER 907 B. Brimming with wonderment and curiosity for what the coming years would bring, we really knew so little of the joys we were to share, and what dear friends we were to find among those who then seemed only new ac- quaintances. We were quick to adjust ourselves to the new life here on the hill, both through the help of the upper classmen, and of our own big sisters, who escorted us to the Kid Party, the first social event, given by Y. W. C. A. Amid the gaiety and color of that evening, we danced away whatever strangeness or loneliness we might have felt. After a month, we rated some organization, and immediately chose our officers. Mary Kettenbeck was our capable President; Elizabeth Trimble, Vice-President; Edith Weeks, Secretary, and Mike Boswell handled the finances. Our representa- tives on council were Florence Massie and Helen Pressley. Mrs. Ramey, our class sponsor, gave her every effort to successfully solving the problems that were many in a class whose very color note was green — a class marked by inexperience — perhaps at times A Comedy of Errors. During the year we entertained and were entertained at various parties, dances, shows and benefits. Our benefit, portraying an Old Fashioned Singing School, was among the cleverest presented that year. We were gracious hostesses to the Junior Class at a delightful dance. At Christmas time we helped Y. W. C. A. and Freshman Commission with the Doll Show. We became interested in Dramatics, in Glee Club, and other campus activities. In June we wove our daisy chain, each daisy signifying some cherished remembrance of our first year at college. The year had passed — and we cried in parting. The summer vacation scattered us somevv hat, but in September, lilfe a magnet, the college drew us to her again, this time as Sophomores, thrilling at the thought of no more fundamentals or elements and feeling within us something of a suave sophistication. We knew more definitely what we wanted to accomplsih and how to go about it with a keener interest. Under the leadership of Elizabeth Trimble, our President; Irene Blasdell-Vice- President; Edith Weeks, Secretary, and Mike Boswell, Treasurer, we progressed en masse. We enjoyed the doin ' s of the other classes, and our pop programs and benefit were both entertaining and we turned our Convocation night into an interesting and worthwhile performance. And now the close of another year has found us again experiencing the bitter hurt of parting from friends who have laughed with us and have become so a part of our lives here on the hill. With the coming of Moving Up Day, we salute the Junior Class of 1936. On that day, as the lovely daisy chain is lifted upon our shoul- ders, we shall review in our minds and in our hearts our Sophomore year, and briefly title it, As You Like It. We were the Freshmen of ' t, — we are the Juniors of ' 36. How excited and happy we were to consider ourselves members of the F. S. T. C. student body. Quickly we readujsted ourselves, learned to like our roommates, and prepared our work as if we had been here always. Y. W. C. A. gave us such a good time at the kid party, where we all became kids for one night, and turned out with our dolls and hair ribbons, that we decided that this was the best party ever. It will always be remembered as one of the grandest affairs of our Freshman year. Our class officers were elected, we had our pictures taken for the Battle- field, and then we went home for Thanksgiving. After this holiday, we thought in terms of Christmas and the doll show, which Freshman commission sponsored. The days passed quickly, and soon we departed once more to our homes for the Christmas vacation. We returned and our interests and energies turned to the work on our benefit which was a Nite Club, to which all our upper classmen friends came in large numbers. As June approached, the Freshman class began to look for daisies and the daisy chain was soon made ready for the Sophomores to carry on class day. When we returned in the fall of ' 34 we were important Sophomores, looking forward to a great year with Jack Clark as our class leader. Members of our group were on the Y. W. Cabinet, on staffs of the two publications, as well as in many other campus organizations. Through the year we worked together, helped in all our efforts by Miss Young, our sponsor. We were loyal devils, and as the year closed, we were the holders of the cup. i935- ' 36 — Can it be true that we are completing three years of joy, happiness, and work that have meant so much to us? Our leader, Alice Phillips, has seen us through this year with great success. We gave our benefit, the junior prom, entertained the Freshmen — and now we are ready to close the page of our three years ' history and think in terms of wearing the cap and gown next year. With our motto, One for all, all for one, we attempt to really contribute to our college. Since we cannot go back in reality, we find our happiness in fond memories. One stifling day, late in September, 1932, three hundred and eighty-one freshmen arrived at F. S. T. C. with their eyes wide open and their ears cocked up. Each in her own way appeared quite important because she was attired in her new fall dress and she was a college freshman! The Y. W. C. A. girls made it much easier by directing us to the Dean ' s office. It was then and there that Mrs. Bushnell started the practice ut answering our questions, which continued to graduation day, because four years has not been long enough to teach us all the answers. At first our classes seemed so difficult. We practically memorized the dictionary; bragged about it, yet hated cutting up those horrid old smelly frogs; found out that all typing teachers are especially adept in finding unmarked errors; and wondered why any upper classman could not discipline the mere infants in the training school. As our memories march backward, we recall how intelligent we seemed at the close of the freshman training period when we made a bonfire out of our exam papers; how important we were in the eyes of others when Helen Taylor was elected as our class president and Julia Frances Robinson as Freshman Commission president; how industrious we considered ourselves at the conclusion of the Doll Show ; how proud we were over the success of our benefit, The Girl in the Little Green Hat ; how homesick we felt sometime or other during the year; how hilarious we sounded at the completion of the Daisy Chain, when our shouts interrupted the commencement play; and how happy we were to return home with the stamp of being F. S. T. C. girls. During our sophomore year, under Anne Seney ' s vivacious leadership, the class of ' 36 came to the front. We began to feel that this was our school and that it demanded our best. For the Goat-Devil contest we waded the creek, scratched ourselves on the bushes, and dug through the leaves. Even though we did not find the flag, we won the tug of war and tied the Devils for the cup this year. When two of our members were selected among the six most outstanding girls on the Hill, we realized that the class of ' 36 was beginning to take its place at the top. As we look back to our junior year, we are impressed by the fact that a number of our class- mates had left to become teachers or to enter the business world. No longer did we find time to be homesick, because we were attempting to teach. Under the leadership of our president, Margaret Moore, and our sponsor. Dr. Charles George Gordon Moss, we presented our first minstrel which was surpassed only by our second minstrel, Dr. Moss ' n His Cap ' n Gowners. During the junior year several of our members were heads of major organizations on the campus; two of our classmates presided over the May Day festivities, and two were elected among the six most outstanding students. No thrill can quite be compared to moving-up day, when we were robed, ringed, and started on the final step. No one can appreciate the senior year unless she is a senior. The thrill, yet sorrow, of realizing that this is the last — the last benefit, the last Goat-Devil fight, the last annual, the last Junior-Senior Prom, the last quarter, the last class. Yes, time has marched , but it has marched happily, gayly, yet sometimes sadly. We are proud of the Class of ' 36. It has filled well its page in the annals of the Fredericks- burg State Teachers College. Each member has filled her place and given her best to her Alma Mater. For the first time in a number of years, all six of the most outstanding girls on the Hill, as elected by the members of the student body, are seniors. As we leave, we shall take with us that feeling that we are glad to have had the opportunity of being F. S. T. C. girls! Olivia Wheeler.
