THE BATTLEFIELD The Vision Splendid ' Tnuas sunset, and the evening star [ ' as tiuinkling in the ivesl; A quiet hush was o ' er the place, Tlie earth seemed at its best. A lonely figure was sitting On the hill, at the foot of a tree — Musing, wondering, dreaming Of the past, and the days to be. And as she sat there thinking — Gazing out o ' er the town below: .1 strange thing happened — Something queer, the vision changed, for lo. Instead of the twinkling street lights. She had seen a moment before. Small candle lights and minute lamps Peeprd through the windows and door. The streets were filled with people Dressed in crinoline And powdered wigs, knee breeches, IValking o ' er the village green — A gay pageantry of figures — Never ceasing — seemed to be Passing in review, slowly, So she could see. The powdered wigs soon passed away , Likewise the crinoline; And in their place others came — Anxious to be seen. On and on — ever changing — This pageantry of life. Each showing the signs of suffering — Joy and sorrow, and of strife. Jf ' hen suddenly, the quietness changed, And panic filled the air — Tlie noise of guns — of thundering hoofs- Destruction — everywhere ! The pageant stopped for a moment. But how quickly time flies; And ere many minutes passed aivay. New figures greeted her eyes. These people had been suffering. But bravely they carried on Their ivork of Reconstruction — A new nation was begun A new feeling crept into the air — Strange, ne w noises were heard. The age of Science and Invention Had crept in on wings — like a bird. The solitary figure stirred — irhat.t Had she been sleeping there? Or had her mind been playing tricks While she sat in the twilight air? Why, there lay Fredericksburg at her feet — Tlie lights gleaming down belov — ■ The noise, and hum of the busy town — People living — and on the go. We rode on the train. We didn ' t want to leave home. Some girls met us, wearing ribbons. They must have been the prizes on the campus. They took us to Mrs. Bushnell ' s office. She gave us a room. We were hungry. We stayed hungry. We had good teams. We had bad tests. We had Devil Spirit. We gave the juniors a hike. We are sophomores. Sophomore Year 1930-1931 In the Vermillion autumn of 1930 we resumed our Ecintillating ca- reer in this institution of higher learning. We ignored sublimely the vociferous freshmen, conversed affably with the juniors, and met the seniors with dignity and serenity. Occurrences appeared to descend upon us always with overwhelming rapidity, but we met them with our philosophical calmness. We even condescended to stoop to black-face at our Darktown Strutters ' Ball, just to amuse our fellow workers here. We have reached the heights of sophistication! Junior Year i 931 -1932 We were sophomores ; We will be seniors ; We ' re always RED DEJ ' ILS! Alma Mlrchison, ' t,. For there tied under the Maple tree. Nonchalantly looking around. Stood a real, live, sure-nujf Billy Goat! Goodness knows inhere he ivas found At last, like dazvn, came the light — Ab-ba . Now we understand Ifhy the Billy Goats were up so early To work out this clever plan! Ole Billy sure served his purpose, Aided by the sign. So very conspicuously placed you know, Right on the Eye-line. That Sassy sign — Here is our Goat — Put fire in the Devil ' s Heart, And the temperature on the campus started rising, Mr. Ripley, Believe it or not ! We liave some unique cliaractcrs on tlic cam- pus at S. T. C. Quite a Fersatile Student Body — to that I ' m sure You ' ll agree; But there ' s two types of creatures represented, Of which no other college could boast. Referring, of course, to the famous Devils and Billy Goats ! ' Twas October the First of ' si that tlic fol- lowing events occurred — So full of spirit, fun, and adventure That ' tis hard to put them in words. At four o ' clock, the crack of Dawn, The first commotion began, JVhen a few Energetic Seniors arose (They were sucli a Happy Band). JFell, this was something unusual — People up that time of the day. But the Devils were too sleepy to wander Or bother about it anyway. The Goats had scored; there was no doubt Or question about that. But the Devils didn ' t worry, For they were next at bat. Jf ' e may be down, But never out ! The Freshies and Juniors would yell ; Then They ' d sing their Fighting Song. And could those Devils raise H Spirit? Goodness, Stranger, The campus ixias full of it that day. Everywhere you ' d look or turn — Are you a Goat, or a Devil? JFell, say . . . Here and tliere on tlie campus Were gatliered little groups Singing, yelling, or plotting Amid much noise, and whoops. The Goats and Seniors and Sophomores on this side; The Devils, Juniors, and Freshmen here, Each assuring one another, Our side has nothing to fear ! ■f E FIELD And so it went ' til Evening, And ' twas time for the dinner hell; But ' when every one started over On the vuay tliey saiti . ■ ■ well. Devils on the Right of them. Devils on the left — Red and =w iite, white and red. The noise made one quite deaf! Marching, Running, Singing, The Devils are gonna win ! Truly ' twas the Devils ' Holiday. And the fun was about to begin. The Goats were distinctiev, too, that night. Wearing ribbons of yellow and black; But this was the Devil ' s inning. And the Goats had to step back! All went well, ' till nine o ' clock, JVhen the real fight was to begin. Providing the Goats hadn ' t found their Em- blem Which the Devils had already hid. Anyway, Every one dressed for the Brawl — Old clothes, and shoes — Ready for the fray, For b y ten o ' clock ' Twould all be over. JVlio would win that day? Dear Reader, I hesitate in writing The events of the next half hour; For I ' m a Devil — proud of it, too — But I ' d like to skip this past some how. Anyway, they ' d found their Goat, By Gum, And had hidden our Devil, And Hovof IVell, we looked, we searched, we hunted. For the Devil, the whole Grove O ' er; Climbed trees, jumped gullies, Moved ivood-piles, ' Til lue couldn ' t look any more. The Devils truly hunted For their red Emblem, I insist, ' Til you ' d thought the school had gone Detec- tive wild — Sherlock Holmes, Philo Vance in our midst. For a lueek you couldn ' t move in the grove. No matter how hard you tried. Without stumbling over a handful of Devils With every other stride. Finally after so long a time The Devil was actually found Betiveen the rocks of a ?iewly built wall, Right on our Happy Hunting Ground This ends our story, readers, Of the Goat and Devil Brawl. The finest spirit on the Campus ll ' as here — it Showed by all! It was fun, excitement, and conflict Guaranteed to make spirit soar, .And zvill go down in S. T. C. History To be preserved for evermore. So in conclusion, I ' d like to say To the student, faculty, and all: We ' re proud of our curious emblems here. Forward, Devils! Onward, Goats! Carry On!
