This year ' s Stella Maris staff chose as their theme a phrase that can be heard quite often on our campus. How many times will you hear a friend say . . . remember when . . .? Every moment we spend together — in small groups of friends, in individual classes, as an entire stu- dent body; becomes a memory. These memories we will always recall as part of the best times of our lives. We all have experiences that merit the do you remember . . .7 question. These times involve not only in- dividuals within the student body, but also teachers, coaches, clergy, counselors, and staff. Because of our i n t r 2 Introduction Section BEGINNING size, we have the opportunity to share our high school years with a number of various types of people. We find it much easier to develop friendships with students in other classes and with our instructors. These special relationships form unique memories for us. There exists a feeling of genuine concern through these friendships. Our aim is to ca ' pture these friendships during the time we spend together so that we will always remember and never forget the special feeling we have for our school. d u c t i o n Do You Remember? . . . Can We Forget? dedicated to Coach Simich The 1983-1984 school year is Ms. Sandy Simich ' s tenth anniversary at Mary Star. For this reason, among others, the yearbook staff has decided to dedicate this year ' s book to Coach. For the 1984 graduating class. Coach is more than just a teacher or a dean. She is respected and admired by all. She is more than dedicated to her job, she is dedicated to the school and the students. Coach ' s sense of humor sets people at ease and makes them iee ' comfortable. Coach, we ' re thankful for you and love you. Happy 10th Anniversar d Introduction Sect ASSOCIATED STUDENT BODY 1983-1984 We, the people of the Associated Student Body, in order to form a more perfect stu- dent government, establish a democratic leadership within a Christian environment, insure school spirit and student in- volvement by providing ex- tracurricular activities, promote social awareness and secure academic achievement. For the Stars, we establish and guarantee these constitutional rights. We will always be. Star of the Sea. 1 devt ' K p.) Look at us now, we ' re Seniors, at the top, and it won ' t be soon ul at the bottom once again. As Freshmen, our class was pretty independent. We did our own thing and made c new friends in the process. Those were the friends that would be ours for the next four years. Our Sophomore and Junior years were the toughest with all the homework and cramming for tests. The class of ' 84 is such a special one. Not just because we think so, but because others think so as well. We have so many leaders in our class, so many talents, and most of all so many people that CARE! We ' ve pne through all the stages of rowing-up together, and ose times we ' ll never forget! We ' ll always stand loyal to the Blue and Gold and cherish the life it has given us. The Class of ' 84 is the thirtieth class to graduate from M.S.S.H.S., and we ' re proud!!! Enthusiastic students got into the Homecoming spirit by par- ticipating in the various class spon- sored events. Lunchtime events had students chugging rootbeer, struggl- ing through an obstacle course, try- ing their hand at voUebyall, and dan- cing to the sounds of a band. During the nights, there was ice skating, a movie, pizza, miniature golf, and Girls ' Volleyball vs. Bishop. Through the week, students and faculty waited eagerly for the big game against crosstown rivals Bishop Mon- tgomery. The day finally arrived. With the game just hours away, the pep squads put on a spirited pep ral- ly highlighted by the crowning of this year ' s Homecoming Queen , Jason Jessica Rackeman and the awarding of the spirit stick to the Sophomores. At the game, the Stars held the Knights to a final score of 17-17. Half time included the pep squads ' performance to this year ' s theme Make It Great , a presenta- tion from the Stars to Phil Jennings, and the crowning of Queen Gina Katnich. Her princesses are Amy Hershman, Renee Marinkovich, Jen- ny Sova and Tracy Walther. This year ' s student council started a new tradition, a summer weekend retreat which deals with planning events for the upcoming year. The council felt very positive and excited about the planned activities for the 1983-84 school year. But even more importantly, the council got to know each other a lot better. Each set of class officers and the ASB were responsible for cooking one meal during the weekend. E ach group planned a menu within a limited budget. Their first stop in Palm Springs was the grocery store. They all made a mad rush for the food, most of which was junk . Yes, the Palm Springs locals gave them the stare — but who cared? They were having a great time! Day sessions were held to plan 56 Activities Section upcoming events. There was even time for rest and relaxation. They also attended mass together on Saturday night. To end the trip with a bang, the van got a flat tire on the freeway — how typical! No one cared though because the weekend had been such a great success. If you ever drove by school in the morning during summer, you would have seen all the pep squads hard at work perfecting their routines. Why were these routines practiced so early in the summer you ask? Well, on July 5th all pep squads were to be on their way to USA camp in Santa Barbara. Every summer the new pep squads go to USA camp for four days to learn routines, cheers, and chants for the upcoming year. There are many dif- ferent workshops to attend each day, including unity workshops and Cap- tain ' s Corner ' . On the second day, each squad is evaluated on their home routine, and are given ribbons based on the level of performance. Everyone became a lot closer over those four days and did many crazy things. People expressed their excite- ment in many strange ways. They jumped in the pool with clothes on. showed their love of Peter Con- nie (. . . he ' s got the looks, got the bod . . .), made ' fuzzy ducks , dressed up like total nerds, and some even felt the need to be just like a flower . . Each squad also met different squads from other schools and became close companions for those four, hard- working days . . . We made the time we had at camp the best it could be, the songs we ' ll always remember sung by Peter Durgee. The four days went by awfully quick, but in that time we proved we were united by bringing home the SPIRIT STICK! 1. A hug a day -keeps the lonelies away. 2. This saying sums up our stay at USA. 3. King Richard I A new tradition started at MSHS this year, a Winter Homecoming for the guys called Winter Festival King . Coach Tony Dobra, along with the GAA, came up with the idea during the beginning of basketball season. Every year we have the traditional Homecoming Queen at a boys ' Varsity game during football season. Why not have a King at a GIRLS ' Varsity game dur- ing basketball season??? Precisely the reasoning of Coach Dobra! Ten Senior guys were chosen by the Senior Class, according to personality, achievement, and involvement. Five were taken from the ten which made up the court. On January 27th, the Winter Festival Princes were escorted by the Homecoming Princesses during halftime of the Girls ' Varsity game vs. St. Bernard ' s. Rich Collins was crowned as first Winter Festival King of 1984. His court was, Jeff Marchin, John Morreale, Vito Russo, and Ricardo Sepulveda. This year, the Seniors of 1984 spent their retreat at the Sacred Heart Retreat House in Big Bear. Directed by Fr. Doran and Sr. Dorothea, they experienced the beauty of God in the Mass, the Bible, and in each other. For two days, the retreaters went from prayer to laughter to tears and back again in a matter of minutes. United in one spirit, they learned about themselves and each other, especially the fact that rooming with 30 other girls was not as fun as it seems. Finding that there was more to people than what you see, they formed new friendships and rediscovered old ones. Special memories included prayer friends, exchanging valentines, the Mass, our futures, and of course, the candle. Do you remember. Seniors? . . . Our current CRL record stands at six wins, four losses, with four league games remaining. Special mention should be made of the fine job perform- ed by this year ' s team captain, Anthony Mardesich, who not only displayed outstanding abilities as our catcher, but also exhibited an excellent standard of leadership. Many students get involved either through a club activity or by taking Christian Service. O.P. Corps is an organization completely devoted to doing volunteer work for the needy. They held their fourth annual Christmas party for the children of the Toberman Settlement pre-school on December 15. With the help of various students and Anthony Scovotto, returning as Santa Claus, Sister Dorothea was able to distribute bags filled with toys to each child. With the money collected from the Christmas Dance everyone was able to take part in bringing some joy to a child during the Christmas season. Christian Service is a Senior course taken by a few students to help in various elementary schools and hospitals, two or three times a week. For those helping in an elementary school, the work consists mainly of correcting papers and spending time with the children. Hospital work involves helping the patients and the hospital staff. There is always something to do for those students who wish to get involved. You will be facing the end of your time here and the beginning of a new phase of your life. Like you, I have mixed feelings about this transition. Many of you have become friends with me. All of you have grown tremendously in four years — physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. It has given me pride and joy to watch you during these four years. You have grown with the school. You have helped the school grow. Saying ' Good bye! ' will not be easy for me. I have grown very attached to all of you, very proud of your accomplishments, very privileged to be part of your lives . . . You will always be part of mine. May the happiness of your senior year stay with you. I think the faculty remembers you most as a happy class, bonded together by your love for each other and your love for your school. The outlook you have developed here is a very good one for life. Don ' t lose it! But always be as generous in sharing it as you have been these last four years. Finally, remember us. As your lives grow and deepen, remember that you can call on us if you need help. We will do everything we can to help you. Remember, too, that we care about your successes and triumphs. Let us know about those, too. God loves you — and so do L Fr. As a student, she participated in many campus organizations such as newspaper! staff, the Lettergirl club, volleyball and basketball teams, and the Girls ' Athletic! Association. Ten years later, she returned, and in the past ten, she has held many differe nt positions of authority at our school which include basketball, Softball, and volleyball coach, dean of men and women, and teacher. Yet Coach Simich has been more than dean, coach, or teacher to a lot of us. She has al 214 Brick Section PAGES tendency to do a little more to make a student feel welcomed and cared for here at Mary Star. A lot of times. Star students will hear Coach Simich referred to as Brick. Four years ago during a P.E. class, a group of lowly freshmen girls labeled Coach with her nickname due to a pair of shoes she used to wear to school all the time. For this reason we decided to label two of our pages Brick Pages and name them our official Brick Section. These photos were taken from the yearbook of Coach ' s 1963 graduating class. ..—- K 2.
