Since you entered this beloved institution, you have witnessed the world ' s rapid transition from the Atomic, to the Sputnik, to the Space age. These transitions have created prob- lems on one hand and infinite possibilities on the other. Many chal- lenges and unsolved problems await you. The flow of new knowledge must come from you. Through the Student Council the students are able to have experiences in government and good citizenship. The purposes of the Student Council are: 1. To teach students self-control 2. To teach students self-government 3. To familiarize students with the democratic ways of living. 4. To give students practice in making carefully considered choices and then carrying out their decisions 5. To accustom students to practice in making and carrying out their own laws. 6. To provide valuable experience to students in conducting meetings, and in debate and parliamentary procedure. 51 The Y-Teens belong to a world-wide fellowship of women and girls of every race, creed, color and occupation in YWCA ' S in 68 countries. The three main purposes of the Y-Teens are: 1. To grow as a person. 2. To grow in friendship with people of all races, religions, and nationalities. 3. To grow in the knowledge and love of God. Objective: To create, maintain, and extend throughout the school and community, high standards of Christian character and leadership. Adviser: Samuel Cox. 52 The Mary Potter FTA is made up of juniors and seniors who are interested in becoming teachers. The purpose of the club is to provide its members with opportunities to identify and develop the qualities and aptitudes basic to successful teaching; to understand the development and purposes of our schools and to appreciate the contributions they make to our democratic free society. McGhee 56 THE BUS DRIVERS FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR 1962-63 The Mary Potter School Bus Drivers cover approximately 10,000 miles monthly; transporting a total of 792 pupils to the following schools; Mary Potter, Orange Street and Angier B. Duke. The bus drivers meet bi-monthly to exchange ideas, and discuss various problems. Items that are dis- cussed include: 1. Safety in the operation of buses. 2. Proper care of vehicles 3. McNeill supervise this organization. 57 Music hath charms to soothe the savage beast. This charm has drawn many students of Mary Potter School into various areas of music. The Mary Potter Chorus exemplifies this fact as they labor untiringly to make their appearances a success. The Junior Glee Club participates in the Christmas Program at school, the Spring Festival held in the City and County Schools, and other Civic Programs. 58 The director and thespians have made their first step in carrying out their theme: To enrich the community with good drama and bring the community into the Drama Club. 59 The New Homemakers of America is the national organization of Negro pupils studying homemaking in junior and senior high schools in the states having separate schools for Negroes. Some of the proposes of the New Homemakers of America are: (1) To promote individual growth by developing physical, social and moral qualities. (2) To promote better home living. (3) To provide wholesome recreational activities. (4) To act as a unit for giving service to the school, community, state, and nation. Advisor Mrs. M. J. Holley 60 The patrol works within the school and on the school buses. Their duties are: (1) Directing the traffic in the halls during the change of classes. (2) Keeping order in the school cafeteria, and (3) Keeping order on the buses. Advisor H. R. Williams 61 The New Fanners of America is a national organization of boys studying vocational agriculture in public secondary schools. The organization has continued to develop rapidly. On June 30, 1961 the active membership totaled 53,259 in 1,250 chapters in 15 states. The primary aim of the New Farmers of America organization is the development of agricultural leadership, cooperation, citizenship, and patriotism. Our annual activities are (1) to sponsor a chapel program (2) to sponsor our annual Parents-Son Ban- quet (3) to participate in the Future Farmers Foundation contests and (4) to support the N.F.A. camp project. There are six freshmen, seven sophomores and three juniors. The Ramettes have won three out of five games thus far. High scorers are Dora T. Bibby with 58 points, Carrie Harris with 35 points, Floriatta Gilreath scoring 26 points, Jacqueline Atkins with 12 points, Geraldine McMannen with 4 points, and Sophronia McCoy with 4 points.
