Education Education EducaHon The Education Department, guided by the demands of state certification, trains teachers for elementary and secondary schools in Ohio. Certification can be trans- ferred to other states. Courses in liberal arts and in the professional subiects are maintained in the teacher prepa- ration. Student teaching in the Toledo area schools during the senior year, allows the young teacher to apply her knowledge of the theories and procedures she learned during her training. The Psychology Department provides an opportunity to major or minor in preparation for a career in psychology or sociology as well as education. Students can gain under-graduote experience in applied psychology, in the child guidance services, and in special education. Opportunities for training in remedial reading in the campus Reading Center are available for those who request it. A guidance service supervises the administration of tests, and gives students the opportunity to secure faculty counseling. 33 Sister Mary Adelberf, Ph.D. Education and Psychology Sister Mary Borromeo, A.M. Fine Arts Fine Arts Fine Arts The Department of Fine Arts offered notable opportunities for the study and appreciation of art. These opportunities were enhanced by the proximity of Toledo's magnificent museum. A wide variety of studio classes challenged the creative expression of the art students. The annual uArt Show held near the culmination of the school year establishes a visual dialogue between art students and their classmates, their parents and their friends. This dialogue strengthened the rapport between students, college, art, and society. Under the direction of Sister Mary Charles, the Speech and Drama division of the Fine Arts Department at Mary Manse has grown in size in the last three years. With courses in Platform Speaking, Speech Correction, Drama, Play Production, Television, and Radio, the Division has given its students an opportunity to develop their talents and broaden their experience in the world of speech and drama. Sister Mary Charles, A.M. Speech Music Gifted, dedicated teachers, under the chairmanship of Sister Mary Regina, and their fledgling students characterize the Music Department at Mary Manse. The department has been further enhanced by numerous excellent performances presented by the choir and the orchestra. Both organizations, comprised of talented students, have increased in numbers as well as stature. Under the direction of Mr. David Carter, the choir performed at these campus functions: lnvestiture, the President's Convocation on Founder's Day, the Christmas concert, the spring concert and class day, plus entertaining twice on television. The orchestra under the direction of Sister Mary Cormencita also per- formed at these campus functions and this year received a coveted seat on Student Council. Sister Mary Regina, M.E. Five upper-division courses of- forded maiors and minors a greater choice of electives in their respective programs: The Modern Novel, Modern Drama, Victorian Literature, Shakespeare, and Milton. The Coordinating Seminar took a new form this year under the direction of Mr. Francis Yezbick. Each seminar focused on a single topic, such as literary criticism, naturalism in litera- ture, and theories of comedy and tragedy. Maiors and minors in English took comprehensive examinations in February as a part of the new pro- gram initiated two years ago. These seniors, the first to graduate under the new program, are confident that they have been well prepared for their chosen careers through the effort of a dynamic department. Mary Sue Deisher, A.M. Activities There is a Time for great things and a time for small Things. . . Cervanfes Solitude prevailed before me beginning of the semester. The registrars' office was the first stopping place in the process of signing up for courses. The bookstore was a stopping place for students before 1he beginning of each semester. 48 Beginning of a Semester Locating your own class schedules and pre- regisfration blanks resulted in another line. It was inevitable that every schedule would be totally correct. Those whose weren't joined the ranks of those waiting to see the Dean. At times the lines inside the registration room were so long the hall had to absorb the overflow. Finding the right classroom on the first day of classes could even merit a smile. As it must eventually come, the time to pay for tuition and fees arrived. A Time to Begin Freshmen and new students received their formal induction into academic life at the lnvestiture ceremony. Here, as parents and friends watched proudly, the administrators bestowed this honor on the students. St. Vin- cent's School of Nursing awarded their cops and capes to their new students as a symbol of their commitment to nursing and profes- sionalism. At this same ceremony, both stu- dents and nurses shared the satisfaction of knowing that they were now academically, formally accepted in full standing. They also gave their time and energies to sun- dry college activities. iiTo Christ through Mary, was the motto of Our Lady's Sodality, which strove to make each member an exemplary Catholic. Through weekly meetings, which concerned current topics of the Church and problems faced by the modern woman, a greater concept of life's challenges was had. With a song in their hearts, the members of the Legion of Mary and the Sodality united to give their favorite Senior Citizens from the area rest homes a joyous Christmas season. Each was presented with a remembrance of the groups' visit. They will long remember the girls who sang many Christmas carols-songs which made everyone young at heart. Mary Manse Student Association Dedication, determination and leadership, characterize the mem- bers of the 1966-1967 Student Council. Under the guidance of Sister Marie de Lourdes the officers coordinated the activities of the Mary Manse Students Association, which includes all full time students. In September the Students Facul- ty Reception provided a time to get acquainted. The Christmas proiect to help the Appalachian people provided a time to serve. New ad- ditions to the campus included Mary Manse matches, ashtrays, and stu- dent government stationary. Room 206 was established as the center of student activities. After the open- ing of the new library, the center was moved to the second floor of Kw... - . 7.; 1 the old library. The Mary Manse Student Council of 1966-1967 was composed of all class officers, the presidents of all council recognized organizations and the tour Student Council officers. The Student Council officers were lseated from third left to rightl Patricia Hickey, secretal'y; Elaine Rankin, vice- president; Margaret Graber, president; and Kathleen Shea, treasurer. Gathered around the model of the proposed hew buildings for the campus were members of the Student Council Executive Board. They were lfrom left to rightl Rosemary Smith, Mary Susan Kimerner, Margaret Gra- ber, Elaine Rankin, Edith Wannemacher, Patricia Hickey, Gretchen Mehling, and Kathleen Shea. Some members of Student Council made the trip to Appalachia. Here Peg Graber compared the routes to take with Mr. Yezbick, the generous faculty member who volunteered to drive the truck. Packing the truck with goods for Appalachia were Regina Flahie and several stronger helpers. Mr. Yezbick started the truck, donated by the Avis firm for the trip. One mile from the exit to Berea, the truck needed a little sustenance . . . gas. Despite the slight delay, the trip was a success and all had a safe return. 95 A brief pause from correcting galleys pro- vided Juanita Jones and Marvel Brinkman with an occasion to laugh. Preludes, a literary supplement, was complied under the direction of Jane Fauble and Lynne Grindle. The art work and the literary pieces were submitted by the student body. Scott Bode and Judith Puffenberger were kept busy guiding the publicity of the col- lege throughout the year. Campus Crier. . .
