9 ect L20 She? W- wb coach January debaters find inspiration in the dictionary. A. Mulgrew, E. Kelleher, D. Hannigan, K. Heidel. ata Debating Club The Debating Club is one of T.M.L.A.,s youngest activities, but thanks to our Moderator and Mr. Robert Leo Sheppard, the elub has already given us a thousand memories. Remember September, when we first heard the words 'cwelfare Staten? Vtfe had to work hard after that, be- cause our first exhibition debate was presented to the Fathers' Club, and the i'YVelfare Statew was our topic. In November, the school had its first look at us when we gave our second debate in General Assembly. Nine- teen-lifty was not all work though, remember our Christ- mas dehate with St. ,Iohn's Prep? Santa Claus and the dancing made that day perfect. As the year progressed, the new members joined us in February, and we presented another debate to the student body: Resolved, that television is an aid to edueationf, tWYe learned, the negative team watched Uncle Miltie, and their homework sufferedl. Little did we know that within the next few months the Welfare Staten was going to be second nature to us, for we de- bated this topic with Chaininade, Cathedral, Loughlin, St. Agnes, College Point, Dominican, Brooklyn Prep and Fordham Prep. And we are only beginning! With the guidance of St. Thomas Aquinas, may we always have memories of our Club, as happy as the ones we have if .t ,SM 5 L it i F . Here, at a Magnet meeting, you will find the girls who do the fine work which appears, so myster- iously, in the halls. QWe hope that you do not think little gnomes do all the work that you see.J Although the work is not so dif- ficult as you may think, it does take time, as any other extra curricular activity does. A project like our frieze for the Art room at Christmas, for instance, takes practically two weeks of after school labor-maybe a hundred hours all told. We are happy to expend that amount of time because we know that you appreciate our work. Our main work lies in making posters to advertise special school events. For in- stance, this year, through our work, we were successful in persuading the girls to attend Father I-Iubbard's Lecture, Father Ewing's Lecture on Archaeologyg the bas- ketball games, dances, Orchestra and Glee Club concerts and the Genesian play. Let- tering is also our specialty as the scrolls done by Mary Collins and Eileen Dwyer definitely show. Even better results can be obtained by a little encouragement from you, our classmates.

Sitting: T. Lihhon. P. Nillesen. Standing: P. Finn. M. l.. Barry. M. Foley. rchestra One, two, three-the haton is raised and the strains of Hayden's '5Surprise Symphonyi' fill the auditorium. This was the long awaited moment in the hearts of one hundred and sixty musicians gathered from St. ,loseplfs of Brentwood, Dominican Commercial, Bishop McDonnell, St. Brendanis, Trinity, Bishop Loughlin and our own academy. The event was the fourth annual combined orchestra concert. Under the direction and care of our Mod- erator, our orchestra meets every morning for one half hour's practice, and also on Tuesday afternoon with our conductor. Mr. Angelo Consoli. The fruits of our long hours of tedi- ous practice are reaped when we go to Town Hall to participate in thc Catholic High School music competition. Our talented group is an integral part of the life of the academy, for rarely does an event take place here with- out thc melodious assistance of the orchestra. Cooperation is the theme of our orchestra, and this has helped make it the outstanding organization it is. Each day and every day we invoke the aid of St. Cecelia, the patron- ess of music., to keep our group as successful as it has heen in the past. 1 ww ' wa x ,A ..s.
