7946-7947 gwffmzfefzf g5ZHl6'l'! TUDENT government! Can it succeed? The answer is definitely yes at Mary Louis. Our Student Council is the governing body of T. M, L. A. lt comprises those students who have elective positions in the school, G. O. officers, Activ- ity Chairmen and Class Presidents. Its main purpose is to imprint on the minds and hearts of each student a spirit of self-government. Because of it, each and every Marielite is given the opportunity to exercise any ability she might have to govern and control, Each member of the Student Council is such because she has proven herself outstanding in both character and scholarship to her fellow school- mates, Therefore, who could be better suited to represent the girls in initiating new laws and enforcing the old ones? For these are the chief functions of the G, O. When a petition is put before the Coun- cil it is not merely passed or rejected im- mediately upon its presentation. Instead, it is carefully and objectively discussed for the good of all, and then voted upon. But that still is not the end! We must enforce these rules, and we have found that one of the best ways of doing this is by endeavoring to set an example and maintain the observance of school rules ourselves. So you see, there's more to Student Government than meets the eye. It takes lots of work, but if, in the end, we can honestly say that T. M. L. A, is tops then we, the Student Council, end the rem-my year with a feeling of success. Owen Doyle, C.P.: our deepest thanks for his guidance during our four eventful years of high-school. Rev. Brian Burke, C.P.: our thanks for that hilarious fifth term. Sister Augustine Maria: the firm hope that the rest of her years at T. M. L. A. will be less hectic than her first. Sister M. Lucide: a time clock for the girls to punch in and out each day. Sister Mary Agatha: a group of volunteers for the oratorical contests. Sister M. Georginazl girls who are the quintessence of elegance in every- thing they do. Sister Alta Maria: a stainless floor and a noiseless lab period. Sister M. Honorine: an eraser to keep notices off the blackboard, and the hope that she will continue to make Virgil so enjoyable. Sister Grace Devota: a Latin translation that isn't terrific . Sister Miriam Fidelis: lockers that are always locked, and four years' supply of paper to make up for all the over-due notices we received. Sister Frances Carmelite: a trip through North America, so she can see some foreigners . Sister Regina Celeste: some Rembrandts to replace the originals of the ar- tists of 1947, and the promise of wedding announcements when we fin- ally meet our John Henrys . Sister Agnes Virginia: a record in French of Little Red Riding-Hood since we all loved Snow White so much. Sister Marie Rosaire: a special messenger to run over after extra sandwiches every day. Sister Muriel Angela: the hope that the next Senior class won't require so much talking to as we did, and a box of strawberries. lRemember the Washington trip?l' Sister Francis Marguerite: a lease on the garden to hold the crowds at the basketball games. Sister Margaret Loyola: a pot of gold so she can build more Mission Chapels. Sister Agnes Immaculate: a collection of Spike Jones' records to prove that the orchestra isn't bad at all. Sister Regina Maria: a new set of admirers to replace the ones that are being torn away. Sister James Cecilia: some its to precede her is correct , and a procession of little lambs to keep her company when we're gone. Sister Clare Agnes: Katherine Cornell and Ethel Barrymore to replace the stars of Every Family Has One . 46
