Often, the question has been asked as to the origin of the word Bluestocking. ■ This is one ex- planation of the name, ' In the late eighteenth century it was the fashion to hold soirees or which women were permitted to porticipote in con- versorion with literory ond ingenious men. These societies come to be known os Blue Stocking Clubs because one of the most emi- nent members of these clubs.
