1979 BLUESTOCKING MARY BALDWIN COLLEGE STAUNTON, VIRGINIA MARTHA S. GRAFTON LIBRARY MARY BALDWIN COLLEGE For one year we have been through it together — the happy moments and the sad. We have depended upon each other to make things work. And work they did! The ' 78- ' 79 year at Mary Baldwin College has been a challenge, a reward, and a time to remember for us all. As part of the continuing cycle, we came to MBC with at least one thing in common — an apprehension of what might lie waiting within those walls. Well, seeing was believing — almost! It would be impossible to relate our experi- ences of the past year to an outsider. But for those of us who have lived them, words are unnecessary. We came to Mary Baldwin to learn, to grow, and to change. But have we accepted the challenge of change? The justifi- This responsibility would have been a lonely one indeed if cation, if any, of this challenge must lie in its results. What we are is what we have learned to be, and the final respon- sibility for this growth — individual or collective, good or bad — is and always has been directly our own. not for the friendships we have found, for they have sus- tained and nurtured us through all the ups and downs. We have suffered together and laughed together, and, through the obscure workings of one moment to the next, contri- buted greatly to each other. = n it, but it has e moments have move on. VE DAY P ' ' ll M 1 v ' u| K , fKLr r . 2 Ik Many things change at Mary Baldwin, but one tradition will always be with us — Apple Day!! This year, the Class of 1981 began planning for Apple Day even before unpacking. Like every class before them, this year ' s Sophomores began with lots of enthusiasm and very little money, but a date had been set and they had acquired that all important liquor license! The Sophomores worked well into the wee hours on Second Floor Academic and behind locked doors to keep it a secret. Telltale red and green paint was spotted on the Class of ' 81, and the entire school wanted to know when the Big Day was. Girls guessed! Excitement grew until finally it was announced that October 18 was the day! MOR The Apple Day Dance was a great success, and those togas were simply smashing! The Sophomores gave MBC the grandest lawn party of the season. Everything was gaily decked out for the day ' s festivities. Students awoke in great anticipation of what lay in store. After some seri- ous early-morning partying, they wormed their way to SMA for can- died apples, apple games, and barrels of fun!! The day was a success, even if the cider did run short and representa- tives from HoUins and Sweetbriar crashed the party. Come visit us again next year, Cone Apples!!! 1-9-8-1; Never outdone! Id a OUR TOWN . . t Our Town — Staunton, Virginia. To those of us from larger cities, Staunton may seem a bit tame. To those from the flatlands, it is the city on seven-hundred hills. To those from the coast, it seems an eternity from the ocean. And to those from small towns, it is just another small town. Staunton is an old town, weathering the winds of change well. Although it has kept up with the times, it has man- aged to maintain its homey small-town atmosphere. Many towns revolve soley around the college or university that makes its home there, but Staunton and MBC have grown up together. Q MAKING TRACKS Staunton is an old town, weathering the wine of change well. Although it has kept pace wit the times, it has managed to maintain its homey, small-town atmosphere. It has the traditional main street , where most shoppei can find everything they need. Or, a casual stroll downtown can give the observer an opportunity to examine and admire the century-old Victorian architecture of many o its buildings. Saturday afternoon could fine one frolicking i one of Staunton ' s several parks. There are probably few Baldwin girls who have not relived high school days by going for a cruise in Gypsy Hill Park at dusk, accompanied by few cold ones! Some have even been know to give impromptu performances in the huge gazebo near the entrance. Or one could simpl feed, or talk to, the animals. Most of us probably never think about Staunton, the town, except for the fact that Mary Baldwin calls it home, and for eight months out of the year, we call it home. Mar towns have grown up and revolve solely around the college or institution that makes ii home there, but Staunton and MBC have grow up together. Few who come here form other areas can help but marvel at the beauty of Staunton ' s surroundings — the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. October 4, 1978 was the 148th anniversary of the birth of Mary JuUa Baldwin, the woman responsible for our being here today, and we celebrated the occasion in grand style. The Senior class gave a representation of what might have been, via skits, and posed such questions as, What would MJB think of a Disco Dolly, or a raid from VMI? or how about, Hey, Mary Julia, do you know what virgins eat for breakfast? No, I didn ' t think so!! Do you minuet, or can you Gator? The entertainment ended with a dramatic presentation of MJB on a rack date! Mary Baldwin, you aren ' t getting older, you ' re getting better!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARY BALDWIN!! FOUNDER ' S DAY Each Fall, Mary Baldwin College holds its annual Founders ' Day ceremony. This occasion, the official birthday of MBC, marks both the Seniors ' Investiture and Senior Freshmen Parents ' Day. The day began with a reception hosted by the faculty and administration in honor of the Freshmen, the Seniors, and their parents. Following the reception was the formal investiture ceremony, led off by the procession of Seniors dressed in their gowns with caps in hand. President Lester made her remarks and the Seniors put on their caps, with tassels to the right, symbolizing that they were officially degree candidates. FALL TAPS I Ih HY k fiiii HV This Fall, a new tradition was born at Mary Baldwin College — Fall Taps 1978. What does Fall Taps mean?? Tanked at Parties!! Our Big Weekend was kicked off with the ceremonial raising of the official flag, accompanied by a bugler — a bugler playing Taps?? Friday night found us living it up at the Greenhouse, enjoying great tunes, great beer, and very little concern for not having a date. A Saturday evening spent with the Backstabbers proved to be a wild night indeed, with beer gradoo on the floor, and bruises galore!! It was a swell party, even if the area dry cleaners did have a booming business on Monday. Sunday was a good time for a Royal pig-out at Brunch. A good idea, yes, but some were too embarrassed to eat that much in front of their dates. Following Brunch was our first Sunday Party of the season — a best-ever, with the Tams and the Baby Tam. TWO BY TWO DAD ' S! We are all leaders of individuality, yet examples of unity. Through our diversity we share a common bond — our ring. It is a symbol of pride in our accomplishments, and in Mary Baldwin College. On November 11, our rings were presented to us by our dads, in the Mary Baldwin tradition, followed by a celebration that will remain in our hearts forever. The night was rather chilly, especially standing in a long line outside with only a sleeveless dress. But Dad, gallant as always, would offer his jacket, a bit large, perhaps, but nice and warm. Then came the one moment in the spotlight, stepping into the over-sized ring to receive ours, plus a kiss from Dad, followed by the first dance with Dad and his best girl . And he was probably thinking, The next time I dance with her will probably be her wedding. Over all, it was a fine evening, if Mom did not mind playing second fiddle, but all too soon it was over. For Dad, it was the kind of evening that makes all Dads say. Thank heaven for little girls! Freshman Follies marked the real debut of the Class of 1982. It was their first activity as a class, and the first time we allowed them to appear, as such, publicly. It was indeed a pleasant surprise to find that here was a class after our own hearts!! The traditional skits involv- ing frat parties and the sheltered girl, those great guys from Veemee Land, and our usually forgotten compet- ition , Sweetbriar, made us secure in the knowledge that such traditions never die. If their moms could see them now, they would feel as we do — proud that they have entered the mainstream of Baldwin Life easily!! CHRISTMAS DANCE Front row: Susan Sherman. Alice Marshall. )oy Breed. Led by Senior Susie Miska, and All-Conference Player, the team finished its season with six wins and seven losses. Faculty and student support was im- pressive for a first-year team, and it was not unusual to find Dr. Lester herself, with bell in hand, cheering the Squirrels on. O Q Somewhere out of the mist of childhood memo- ries comes an old saying uttered by probably the wisest sage of all time: You never really know someone until you have lived with her. Except under the bond of marriage, nowhere is this truer than a college dorm. Perhaps the first person a freshman gets to know is her room- mate. Then comes the challenge of getting to know the girls on her hall. Of course, she will get to know many other girls on campus, but nothing can quite take the place of the camaraderie with the girls on the hall. During the dayhght hours, the campus is regu- larly patroled by an army of highly sophisti- cated and intelligent young women, each wag- ing a campaign to attain academic excellence. But at night, when the grounds are quiet, the dorms are crawling with sometimes other- than-academic pursuits. Where else can seem- ingly normal young women go absolutely bananas except in the privacy of their own dorms? i. i .. .. ' y - -A SSI ' 1 sHiQy iS CHAOS, n oh, the joys of dorm living, where one ' s individuality and originaUty are constantly put to the test. Where else can one skate-board up and down the hall, pig-out on an array of delectables, borrow an entire outfit from several different people, get blitzed without worrying about who ' s driving home, find someone to help with a dif- ficult course, or get up a group for a last-minute, late- night roll? And there is always someone around who can lend a hand when the going gets rough, and the list of things-to-do does not seem to have an end. t ' - M hSf t Anyone who has never experienced a dorm environment has truly mis- sed some valuable lessons in human nature. Living with a group of girls from different geographical locations and all walks of life is an education in itself. Just listening to all the different regional accents adds to the enjoyment of meeting new people. It is in meeting new people that we find other values to compare to our own. Some we will alter slightly, some we will discard completely, and others we will reaffirm and strengthen. But the most fascinating aspect of dorm life is watching how people change, especially the shy, shel- tered freshman who survives the rude awakening and finally finds her self-confidence and her niche at MBC. Shortly before graduation, it is funny to look back at the way we were and wonder, Were we really that silly? or Was I really voted Hall Fool? Then comes the inevitable question — Was living in a place like that instead of commut- ing to a nearby school really worth it? As with anything that demands a lot of time, energy, and patience, I find myself wondering if the production of this book was really worth the effort, not only for my own personal satisfaction, but for that of the staff as well. I keep asking myself if this is the very best we could do. But that is not for the few who produce to decide. The final judgement comes from those for whom this book has been published — our peers. Perhaps if there is one thing, anything — the cover, a particular picture, or maybe even one phrase — that sticks in the mind and makes you remember this year, and makes this book in- dividually important, then yes, my year has been worth- while. The putting together of a yearbook is an awesome under- taking, as any and every editor will tell you, for it in- volves countless hours of work, worry, argument, com- promise, and those occasional bursts of temper which do help ease some of the tension. All of this results in frayed nerves, a loss of mind, and dwindling strength. Many times, the only feedback is criticism — generally nega- tive, for innovations do not come easily, and acceptance is hard won. There is no financial gain, and all to often, little praise. On behalf of my staff, I wish to acknowledge and thank Dr. Frank Pancake, our advisor, for all of his time, effort, and interest in us as people, and Jim Ellis, our representa- tive from Hunter Publishing, who smoothed over all of our little crises, and whose patience was sorely tried. VA 24401 A whirlwind of daydreams carries me far beyond reality and into the distant haze of tomorrow. The bewonderment of the totality of all things over- whelms me as 1 toss dreams to the currents of air between yesterday and today. Through an increas- ing understanding of myself, I can sense that I am growing inside and slowly evolving into a whole person. I am filled with exaultation as the chaos of my mind yields to order, as uncertainty makes way for security. The search for my value as an indi- vidual, as an integral part of humanity begins and ends in change. Confusion and euphoria simultaneously affect me during thoughts dealing with others. I often experience feelings of alienation from many seemingly well-adjusted people. At other moments, though, I seem to have found my niche in the Mary Baldwin community. My reactions to human relationships stem from the constant activity of the changes within me, and I realize that people, like snowflakes, are each different, unique, each a one of a kind miracle, and each one a very special self. A myriad of diversions and occurences have filled my hours. Some appear to be so senseless and unenlightening. Yet, I perceive that I am gathering un- limited knowledge from seemingly tri- vial feats. Like stones in a kaleidoscope, the dispersed events of my life assume a meaningful pattern. And so the countdown begins. As winter ' s blanket slowly dissolves, I look forward to Spring, the season of new beginnings, and also, endless goodbyes. With all the quickness of a Hght-switch, my life at Mary Baldwin College will be over, for time, relentless time, marches to an unchanging tempo, unlike the dog, who forever follows his master. opltamaca h au?
