After one year at Mary Baldwin, I can best comment on the office of Chaplain by noting a symbolic act that I completed five minutes ago. I took the sign that read Chaplain off my door and replaced it with one that reads Mr. Beauchamp. A small gesture, granted, but it signifies several big ideas about what college is and how religion shows itself on campus. First, college is a rite of passage from adolescence to adult- hood. It calls for the education of the whole person, not just of the mind. Emotions and value commitments need educating as well as thought processes. College, then, must be a person- alized, humanized environment where the meaning of life, my life, is attended to, as well as the increase of knowledge and intellectual acumen. Only people can bring off that larger process of becoming, not officials. Hence I prefer to be known as Mr. Beauchamp instead of the chaplain. Second, even though traditional expressions of the religious life, such as chapel services and chaplains, are more often avoided than sought out by students, the religious quest is, nevertheless, the most vital force on campus. Students do seem to want and need a sense of meaning and a source of stability, and that is what religious faith is all about. But the trappings of religious traditions do not stand for or satisfy these needs for many. By shedding my title I can relate to the substantive religious quest as I find it on campus without unnecessary obstacles. Mary Baldwin is a real (not perfect) community where real (not perfect) people are involved together in the real process of discovering, ever more fully, what is Real and Worthy. The price that I and anyone must pay to join that community and participate in that process is to be real myself, to give you my name instead of a title. Paradoxical as it may seem, taking the chaplain sign off my door may be the most religious act I have committed all year. I ' m Richard Beauchamp. Who are you? If we can follow up that beginning, a whole liberal education, and maybe even an experience of the Holy, awaits us . Richard Beauchamp Chaplain
