KELLY: I think the real essence is in the word liberal itself. In today ' s political market place the term has been abused to mean many things. I would want to stress the term in its proper sense from the French root liber or free — to mean simply that any liberal arts college should aim to free or extend a student ' s range of knowledge and understanding. And if an institution honors its commitment to give students a true, lib- eral education, the students are going to be challenged, for any liberating experience in education calls up for review everything that has gone before it. It requires critical examination of all the old ideas and conclu- sions which one has held dear. INTERVIEWER: Do you see a relation be- tween this challenge which a true, liberal education provides and the kinds of stu- dents a college like Mary Baldwin should seek to attract? KELLY: Yes. This is a difficult point to make — and both parents and students can all too easily misunderstand. In my own experi- ence, I often hear parents say, Please don ' t change my daughter ' s values which we have tried so hard to instill. Or some say, I want to go to Mary Baldwin because the girls seem to believe about things as I do. I can only answer that if this be our sole purpose in existence, then Mary Bald- win shall fail miserably. . . . And Founder ' s Day Mrs. Martha S. Earth Day: April 22 Students throughout the nation expressed their concern tor the problems of air pollution and for the misuse of our national heritage evidenced by pleas for pollution control and by planning a na- tionwide Environmental Teach-in. Mary Baldwin students headed by the Tri-Beta Society participated in a community-wide education program and clean up project. i The Population Explosion As evidence of the concern for the population problem, the Biology Department conducted its senior seminar on overpopulation and a poll was taken of Mary Baldwin students. The results ob- tained, representative of the prevailing opinions among young unmarried women who will soon be faced with the decision of what size family they want, were divided between Catholics and Protestants: Wt ■i J , !Sft.S i . More and more women are recognizing that the population problem is not only international and national, but also individual. Drug Usage: Response On A Small Campus i £ % m 7 r ?3 Ktr H Hr s HH  J MJ ■' f T fl I UI H feM Jf jr The Student Govern- ment Association, in response to the issue of drug usage, held a ten day symposium in March, the purpose of which was not to promote the use of drugs or advise against it, but rather simply to present factual aspects of physiological research, and an explana- tion of the present legalities and statutes concerning narcotics convictions so that people of this community might be better informed. I he Vietnam Debate: Two Views We had all thought about it But the impetus tillered down from a national movement. It is hard, perhaps to find an ai i urate collective consciousness, to be general and yet to particularize the moratorium here at Mary Baldwin in a meaningful way. It is important to get the colors right. To paint the right shades, to re-create what was so vital to some of us, we had to act it out, couldn ' t simply talk about it any longer. So writing about it may be the wrong mode. Marybe you should walk around while you read. Get the blood moving. Get the outside of you to work the inside of you. For a number of reasons, some good, some baa; in a number of ways, some complex, some painfully simple, we chose to stand loosely together against the war in Viet Nam. What effect we had can ' t really be known yet; what happened inside us can be. Oc- tober 15: like college campuses everywhere the day was special, unlike many other colleges it was a new thing here - there were giggles and fears of parents finding our, there was acting, there were real tears. God came to the courthouse where our march ended, and some of us who seldom claimed him called for exclu- sive rights that day. In October we were a group, solid, without individual identity; November came: some of us went to Wash- ington, told Nixon what we thought, maybe gave away too much of how we were thinking, experienced, got the right vibrations, came back cleansed. Then the work. The door to door commie kid routine. Not everywhere, but we began to see how things were. Colors were intense. Felt like dull gold walking in a house, warm and true, came out murky, flat. Lost the texture somewhere. We stayed with it more or less. Pollution came to the campus. But the war stayed too. For once, the campus split apart. I was glad. False community showed itself frequently. We were different. We became human in way unknown at Mary Baldwin before. It felt vital - flashed sunny yellow and angry red alternately. We managed. We haven ' t stopped the war. Nixon hasn ' t listened. Some of us are tired. Some of us have quit Some of us took to the streets badly. But we came off the hill for something bigger than our usual journeys, for a hazy blue cause that ' s still going on and we are different for it and Mary Baldwin is different for it and Staun- ton is different for it. All the colors aren ' t mixed yet, but, perhaps even in our confusion, there was more to it than an existential thrust in what we see as a black night, maybe we changed the shades. As the basic sentiments of the national moratorium committee filtered down to its contingent at Mary Baldwin, another group made its feelings known, as well. We were that part of the Great Silent Majority who were neither silent, nor a majority. Our reaction emerged out of feeling that too many people were irre- sponsibly lumping on the moratorium bandwagon in protest of the Viet Nam war. Our immediate reaction was, Is anyone ' for ' war ' They seemed to feel that there are people for war and we set out to show that, while we weren ' t lor war, we could offer another point of view. Our prime concern was that those who so blatantly struck out against the military and the war, should, at least, be offered a view of the war from the perspective of the soldier himselt and his family. We felt they had not considered the fact that those most closely associated with the war, are the ones who suffer from it and who dislike it most. We are, also, ironically, the ones who feel that unilateral withdrawal — a policy advocated by many moratorium members — would be disastrous. These seem- ing antithetical ideas — strong dislike and an equally strong re- fusal to give-up — come from a very real sense that we do, in fact, have a commitment in Viet Nam. On October 13, three Army and Air Force officers came to our campus and discussed their own experiences. They had seen it — all of it - first-hand. Their stories were not pretty, but they were true, and they reflected their belief that we have a place in Viet Nam. October 15 was a hard day. We watched the disruptive morato- rium activities and realized that they would only make President Nixon ' s job even harder. The marching groups shouting names, and the black armbands on sleeves seemed like a mockery of those who had died or those who now fought. We felt bitter for the lack of respect they were showing for our nation. November came and went. The furor created in October seems to have died almost completely. How do people feel now? The two groups (encompassing only a relatively small number of people) which provided the original impetus for the activity on our campus, still feel strongly. The rest seem to have joined the ranks of the Great Silent Majority , and have, to a large extent, forgotten the issues which polarized our campus last fall. New issues and causes are in the foreground today, but talk of Viet Nam still remains. Some of us talk about it more than others. Whether or not the others are uncommitted is questionable, but it is incontestable that they are silent. A day of re-examination — October 15 We gather here today to march in protest against the war in Vietnam not because we think we have a corner on the truth about this war. Many of us are perplexed. We claim only that the best, most responsible understanding to which we have been able to come requires us at this moment to protest our country ' s present pursuit of this war. c. -anvassing the Staunton area for the Viet Nam moratorium in some cases proved to be a more enlightening experience for the canvassers than for the people contacted. An older man said he was glad to see MBC stu- dents involved with something more important than the perennial fraternity party cycle in Charlottesville and Lexington. A Staunton policeman had this to say: We had no trouble whatsoever, and it was a very peaceful demonstration. I served my hitch in the Army and think everyone else should, too. The only thing I didn ' t like about it was it took my day off. A Legionaire said, It was absolutely terrible be- cause the enemy thinks we ' re starting a revolution. It ' s OK to voice an opinion but not to the ex- tent of name calling ... commented a Staunton receptionist. Iffflllllllllllllllll Foreign affairs colloquiums question future relations In trying to settle the dispute all the nations involved must think in terms of what is possible as well as what is right, Dr. Rouhollah Ramazani, professor of government and foreign affairs at the University of Virginia said. w e have found the American dream has become a nightmare H. Baron Shirley Chisholm - I ' m not here to talk to those imbedded in racism. I speak to those who still be- lieve there is something in the Judeo-Christian doc- trine and the brotherhood of man. Dr. Brozen advocated the repeal of a number of protective federal measures as a means of solving the ghetto problems, specifically including the eli- mination of welfare payments to those who refuse jobs of whatever variety. Dr. Baron, head of a youth urban studies program, revealed that his students are learning that what they feel emotionally ... is a way of knowing, and expressed hope for the fashioning of a new dream and of a new union. February 20 21 gave Mary Baldwin students a chance to face the truth by exploring some of the vital economical, political, and sociolog- ical problems associated with the American ghetto. A two day conference entitled The Ghetto - Why? was led by Chicago econom- ist Yale Brozen, U.S. Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm, D-NY, and urban-studies coordina- tor Harold Baron. 19 Dr. Joseph Schwab DR. JOSEPH SCHWAB: Our curriculum is intended to be a corporate intellectual adventure engaging faculty and student jointly. The classroom must cease to be the place where the student is mainly tested to determine what he has understood from his ' homework ' and where the un-understood official doctrine is re-explained by the instructor. Dean Rusk Mr. Rusk said during A C onversation With Dean Rusk held here in March that he feels there is a need for dialogue between the generations but that the debate in the country today is between the generation that is beginning to forget and the generation that has had no chance to remember. REV. CANON BRYAN GREEN: It is a mistake to say that Christianity deals with the soul . . . Christianity deals with the whole embodied person, not simply with something other-worldly called a soul. This is the most worldly of all religions; it makes material life a part of God ' s intention for man. Reverend Canon Bryan Green Voices ' 69-70 SHIRLEY CHISHOLM: I am the people ' s politician. If the day should ever come when the people can ' t save me, I ' ll know I ' m finished. DR. DAVID R. MACE: The sexual revolution was nothing, more or less, than a vigorous, grassroots revolt aginst the antisex concept. HAROLD M. BARON: . . . what they feel emotionally ... is a way of knowing. DR. ROUHOLLAH ROMAZONI: We ' ve got to, at times, look at people ' s perspectives rather than just facts. DR. BERNARD REICH: Israel will continue to fight to the last man, because Israelites are not only fighting for themselves but for the continuance of ludaism. C. It is seldom a one-way street: both MBC student and child or adult learn from the other — learn to appreciate more of what he has and what he has to give to someone else. Western State: Every Sunday morning girls with musical talents would go to Western State to assist in the chapel services as well as to participate in the dialogue services. Tutorial Service: Underprivileged children came to the Mary Baldwin campus once a week for two hours of tutoring by students. The MB student and the child would relate to each other and enjoy the learning experience. VSDB: Mary Baldwin students went to the VSDB campus and played with the pupil there. Skating, frisbee, artwork, and parties were some activities which excited the child not exposed to them previously. Operation Playmate: One afternoon a week underprivileged children were entertained by Mary Baldwin students at the First Presbyterian Church. Project Opportunity: Although not active first semester due to the school having to be made up because of the flood, this program which worked with the high school students of Nelson County got underway second semester. Nelson County students visited the campus for the Sophomore Show and on Junior Visiting Day. Stewardship Project: The Christian Association raised a sum of money to help the Nelson County citizens as did various other civic groups and churches. 33 Nelson County - August 20, 1969 The new regime at the Folger The Folger Shakespeare Library Theater in Washington, DC. had never been used tor a live performance until Mary Baldwin appeared there this past December. The Wise and Foolish Maidens and Three Daughters were transcribed for production from their original dramatic and musical manuscripts by Dr. Fletcher Collins, )r. Wendell Margrave wrote in The Evening Star, I must say I was delighted by the performance, and so was the audience that packed the theater. There was a most gratifying blending of sound scholarship with the considerations of practical performance. Videotape excerpts have been taken from the performance to be used for a half hour long program that will be viewed on educational TV stations. The Readers ' Theater performances throughout the year have continued to offer the theater experience for Mary Baldwin students. When it comes off, its because we ' ve done it together Seven productions have exposed both actors and audience to a scope of plays ranging from Aeschylus ' Agamemnon to lonesco ' s The Chairs . The periodical Improviso Coffee House has provided relaxed entertainment in the form of student improvisations, faculty talent, and performances. A series of improvisations entitled The Box was presented in January and has gone to the Virginia College Drama Festival for competition with other Virginia colleges. The Theater Wagon, origination in Staunton 15 years ago, was founded by Dr. and Mrs. Fletcher Collins, |r. Dr. Collins says his company of playwrights and players, We ' re not theorists, we just do it. They tour their own plays, and explain their view of theater this way: Only with the theater do you get the special sense of association between audience and subject matter — a yearning inherent in our mass-oriented society. 37 D. B 56 R esponding to the changing needs of a liberal arts education This year in response to the perennial question of what in fact grades really mean, we debated the possibility of incorporating the pass-fail system into the new curriculum. Also this year the Student Government ratified a new constitution in hopes of providing a system in which more students might participate and learn what it means to be a part, rather than apart. We have taken precepts from a man named Joseph Schwab and begun to apply them. We are teaching our rebel- lious selves, our loving selves and our tearful selves that in Schwab ' s terms the community proper to a college is, then, a community of collaboration, and the problem of community, tor the college as a whole, is not to remove differences, but to use them and enjoy them. (College Curriculum and Stu- dent Protest, p. 259) We are learning that no one person has special access to the truth - not a student, not a professor, not a member of the administration. We are learning to recognize that there are many ways of knowing the truth and that we need not fear placing ourselves in the hands of others to see a new way. And we are learning that we become part of something larger than ourselves: an adventure in living and loving, a truth belonging to all mankind. Rufus ' Trunk Committee On The 70 ' s This group of about 50 students, faculty, an staff have joined together in an effort to turn the life of this community into one of intellec tual and cultural activity. If we can overcome the pettiness, if we can arouse concern, if we can open the way to responsible dia logue, then we students will have earned the name of members of an academic community. Mary Baldwin has a ' master goal ' , that of being a good, small liberal arts college. However, such a goal must be nurtured by constant re-evaluation and constructive criticisms and recommendations. Thus Dr. William Kelly de- scribed the purpose of the President ' s Commit- tee on the Challenge of the 70 ' s. And so this group of sixteen people, representing all sec- tors of the Mary Baldwin community — faculty, students, alumnae, trustees, administration — began its work this past January. Presently the committee has constructed what Mr. Richard Gifford, trustee and chairman of the commit- tee, calls a strawman of suggested goals for Mary Baldwin ' s future. These projected goals will encompass all phases of college life, in- cluding size, curriculum, Christian committ- ment, and admissions. After informal discus- sion of the strawman with the rest of the college community, the Committee on the 70 ' s will draw up a set of formal recommendations which will be presented to the Board of Trus- tees for approval. Members of the committee would agree, as Dr. Kelly stated in his inau- gural speech, that no assignment could be much more challenging — but I hasten to add exciting.
