The campus hadn ' t changed much . . . the library was really beginning to look like a building though . . . another year had begun. Two days were spent getting ready for the new arrivals . . . and then on Tuesday the Freshmen started coming. With them came anxious parents, trunks and a few tears. For Leggett ' s it was boom time again. Friday the upperclassmen started to trickle in, accompanied by a summer of memories, and lots of stories to tell. Nonchalance gave way to squeals when old friends were reunited. Twilight came . . . and the view of the hill was still pretty much the same. %«• Autumn . . . The trees are tongues of fire lapping the stained russet air. The sky is bluer than ever. The sedge is withered from the lake . . . and no birds sing . . . For many this is the last autumn that we will see here, framed in mountains and colored collegiate. Knowing professors outside of class as well as inside is an experience that comes with years . . . All too soon the trees give up their adorn- ments and strain their charred fingertips to a sky that threatens winter. The first weekend in October is Mary Baldwin ' s Founder ' s Day ... by tradition, it is the day when the seniors receive their marks of seniority . . . their caps and gowns. Proud parents and faculty filled King Building to the strains of thou wast born of dreams It was a beginning and an end. No, I don ' t have any classes tomorrow, laughs senior to freshman with jaded authority. Only the sophomores know the Apple Day date for sure, and the class guards its secret jealously. You know when two Wednesdays in October have come and gone, and you walk out of chapel and — lo! in the heavens there appeareth . . . Apple Fool Day? Oh well! Finally a banner floats from the library proclaiming Apple-less Day. No miracles could bring life back to the frost bitten apples . . . and when the day arrived all the nursery rhymes in the world couldn ' t make the rain go away. Apple Day 1966 . . . picnic lunch in Hunt, bob- ing for pears and folk-singing in King . . . only the sophomores . . . who translates that as a wise fool Fall brings visitors to the Staunton campus . . . among the first to arrive were the freshmen parents. Painstaking preparations crowded a crisp November Friday: welcome signs waved in dorms; spotless rooms and sparkling attire glowed. You ' re here! Red and yellow autumn air sparked high spirits among students, faculty and parents. This weekend, laced with a luncheon, concert, and tea, was over too soon . . . and it was hard to tell who had been happier to see whom. 1 yRE r ' w nut Hill iipiiiiiiiiiiiii l gx, ... . ' ■ ■ ■ - .■ ' ■ J umM .... L K Under the sponsorship of Mary Baldwin Young Republicans, William Miller, Republican Vice-Presi- dential candidate in 1964, visited the campus for a day. He met with students for informal talks and made a non-political? address to the public. 13 They drew the largest crowd that King Building has held this year, despite the fact they were over an hour late. The Serendipity Singers pro- vided an evening that will not soon be forgotten . . . From their impromptu re-gelling of the stage lights to their routine jokes spiced with Staunton anecdotes, the Serendips were by far the student favorites of the 1966-67 King Series. 1 i • Religious Emphasis Week came upon us quietly, and left quietly profound impression — Three chapel talks, panel discussions, and private interviews, with Religious Emphasis Week guest speaker Dr. Robert W. Bertram, highlighted the week. A time for sitting apart and wondering . . . 15 I Winter . . . And the snow came with a pearled whisper, blanketing grasses and concrete in anony- mous freeze. A perfect icicled morning dripped into days of slippery-booted climbs and frost- biting spills. Our words pow- dered the air. Dream prone girls let the crystals lead them through whimsical journeys . . . while the more practical-minded were filled with worry-thoughts of transportation stalls and winter colds. We donned our slacks and braved the storms, watching as gifted winds painted the campus. And the snow melted, baring a happier earth. From September to January there seemed to be a lot of empty hours; then all of a sudden the dreaded dark cloud of exams descended upon us and we braced ourselves for the onslaught. Books grasped our time with strange-lettered hands, and sleep be- came a thing of the past. A week stocked with the curios of all-nighters, diet pills, blue books, writer ' s cramp and hysteria . . . Classrooms hung heavy with the scratch of pens and churning of minds, and we turned our backs on the glow of sunny weather outside to face the gray atmosphere of academic endeavor. Even the clamor of Staunton seemed dimmer as 24-hour quiet reigned on campus. And, even though Experimental is over for an- other year, the rats still have to be fed . . . Yet, weary-eyed, we lived through it all — bol- stered by the smiling knowledge that this too will pass. il |f ••• 19 :( Weekends . . . Sink your teeth into Monday morning coffee . . . have a last relaxing cigarette . . . take a few aspirin ( the headache will go away ) . Come on, you keep telling me, hurry . . . we ' ve got to go to classes and chapel. By Wednesday, yellow is a painful color. The world is pressing. The sky is falling in glass splinters. Viet Nam and Shakesp)eare ring the frosty edges of intellect . . . Don ' t forget to sign out. Then Friday . . . Saturday. With new zest for life, we pack our bags and joyously sally forth to the unknown world beyond the Valley. The worst time is Sunday . . . you keep driving and getting closer, but you can ' t bring yourself to look ahead. When you finally do get back, the only welcome is a type-flecked page of a yet unopened book. 21 Crowds . . . The race of the crowd caught us up, and we ran quickly in its tumult. With the intensity of others close around, steps were hurried and thoughts were blurred. Individuals molded into one nameless parade. We moved through the year in a mass, apartness saved for another time. Carried by the mayhem of others, we tasted a unity, and the self was left be- hind. Friends . . . we felt the warmth of familiar faces, smiling eyes. Through smoke-soft hours in the lounges, we shared life. Helping one another in the crush of despair, joining together in the abandon of laughter, we seemed old and wise . . . and then at times, we knew we were children. As always, in September was the joy of returning, of seeing again, of catching up. We faced the months ahead arm in arm, building castles for the future. And in June came the clouded emptiness of good- byes . . . 24 V 4 26 And sometimes I wanted to be alone, to escape the others. I looked for a glimpse of my own re- flection. Solitude ... a wonder of ideas, memories, dreams. I sought the person- al, the unique, and found myself changing. The quiet of an empty room, the hush of a lone afternoon or even solitude in a mass of people . . . the hours watched my growing and the silence heard my thoughts. 27 Ruins, Ruins, Ruins . . . Spain is famous for its beautiful ruins . . . Someone forgot to take pic- tures of the juniors abroad . . . Maybe you can spot them en masse at the bullfight . . . try. In Spain: Susan Clements Elizabeth Donelson Mary Margaret Drewrey Hannah Dyer Suzanne Freeman Linda Gianakos Carolyn Murphy Jo Anne Musulin Barbara Penick Susan Powell Evelyn Reynolds Alicia Rodon Linda Young 28 Morning in the Seine-split city dawns on two different worlds . . . that of the Parisian and the American student. Mary Baldwin faced blood-and-guts opposition on the G-E College Bowl, but despite the defeat came back to crowds of appreciation and pride. Weeks of practice . . . (but no sabbatical leave) . . . buzzers . . . questions rivalling trivia . . . and a student send-off party the night before. It ' s not whether you win or lose . . . it ' s what was the score ratio. Fine Arts 32 Performing on occasional Thurs- days, members of Readers ' Theatre unfold great dramatic works of present and past on a grey carpet without footlights. The curtain goes up (we must use our imagination), the house lights dim and . . . every- body walks around and reads Judith, Alcestis, and anything else Thespis tried. We ' ve got The Knack. 33 The coffee house . . . It started as Acting 301 and grew into 6 Actresses in Search of a Character. A benefit for the new theatre we ' re going to have (someday) . . . featured everything from gibberish to coffee, candles, coal mines . . . and washing machines? 34 Workshop . . . Imagine the dorm lounge after a rough week — you ' ve got the drama workshop ... a cheerful clutter of everything . . . Madonnas and donkeys . . . greasepaint and crepe hair . . . the remnants of Oliver! . . . the rem- nants of every production staged since 1946. Hot white lights of the dressing table . . . That eye ' s got to be RED! Please don ' t flick ashes on the costumes! As a matter of fact, NO SMOKING! Dramatic . . . traumatic. OLIVER! 36 Broadway had a revolv- ing stage and a few men — as a starter and for com- parison. Given King stage and 90 girls, how do you produce OLIVER! in six weeks? Amazing feat, but the Sophomore Show played to near capacity- audiences and brought a command performance reprise at convocation. Fooling us with faulty starts, spring finally came in with a rush and hug of green. The earth shrugged off its winter wools and primped in the fresh colors of Easter . . . . . . With the pulse quickening outside, neglected studies crept even more slow- ly. Thoughts drifted lazily with the breeze . . . and we found a young woman ' s fancy also turns to love . . . Spring was a time for stretching on the grass and merely riding the world for a while. 43 Enthusiasm and participation etched the clan system with success. On tense nights the gym rang with shrill voices and excitement aS girls strained just-discovered muscles in a bar- rage of games. And in the spring, the tennis courts were full . . . with both players and spectators . . . while in the Mirror Room strains of Bach and Bartok guided the movements of the dancers. -Vv- ■•«.- .• -TnrrTJTfr g, s SPORTS 45 Two bits — four bits — six bits — a dollarl There was good reason to yell . . . from the RA ' s opening Freshman Stunt Night (the English walked away with the prize) ... to the Dolphin ' s annual soiree. Hours of practice were realized in a matter of minutes on stage . And for the ever-growing throng of ski enthus- iasts there were the all too quickly gone weekends at Ski Bryce and The Homestead . . . with dreams of Aspen. 46 fe i f n jBR? h Dormitory living . . . To the bleating strains of pop music and paced by the beat of popcorn, dorm life re- volves around chatter-loud lounges. T.V. ' s sound into early hours of the morning, en- trancing crews of old-movie fans — as those most inclined to cards span the midnight break with bridge . . . and a few with bed. Every dorm is a community within itself. There are all the comforts of a home (circa 1900), sometimes the machines work to pro- vide not so nourishing nourishment . . . and there ' s always a beautician. For the studious . . . the drudgery of hall- bound study is a mixed blessing . . . thank goodness phone duty only comes once in a while . . . Enlivened by the snap of potato chips, parties break the monotony of the months. At Christmas, unique Santa Clauses of varied sizes and shapes present unsuspecting friends with needled speeches and gifts . . . To ease exam tension and to be a giving friend, Mary Baldwin has its traditional peanut week. Room- mates conceal shells and everyone has a knowing glint in her eye. And then, the year closes — with it, the doors of campus quarters click, holding within, a medley of memories. Barby Brown . . . Her self-knowledge and inner peace en- courage others to attempt the same. She is an example to be emulated, yet her appreciation of the individual spurs others to develop their own person. At a college like ours, there must be an equilibrium, a balance between the claims of the community on one hand and of the individual on the other. But the tension implied by this equilibrium is dynamic rather than static. Changing conditions continually upset the balance, demanding that each college generation, each class, set it aright. Helping to preserve the equilibrium is an important part of edu- cation. As they work to keep the two forces in balance, students learn that the claims of both are legitimate. Society needs persons who understand that individual rights and community responsibilities are neither antithetical nor mutually ex- clusive. I hope that Mary Baldwin will continue to produce its share of persons with this kind of understanding. Dr. Samuel Reid Spencer, Jr. President of the College Joseph W. Swezey History, Political Science, Economics 76 History In time-machine classrooms, tourists of the past keep trim in ancient Sparta, shout through the Reign of Terror, and tremble at the shot heard round the world. Through finger-fatiguing, ink-stained lectures, hoarse professors unravel the mystery of history. By cleverly tying the ribbons of the past and the ropes of the present, dexterous teachers send their beskirted disciples off . . . ensnared in knots. Lurking within this department are the academic diseases: reddening of retrospective eyes, infections of ingrown books, and indigestion from stable facts plus bulky theories, And clutching their armor of chronicled knowledge, the girls leave MBC, yielding the battle cry of History repeats itself, itself, itself . . . Dr. Patricia Holbert Menk Mr. Yancey Coleman Hines, Jr. Mr. Robert Henry Lafleur 77 Dr. Charles J. Stanley The George Hammond Sullivan Department Of Political Science Despite the current confusion of crying countries, there are those who, through data-colored analysis, extract exalted Political Theories . . . on which teeters the tower of predictions. Behind closed doors, this department plays with the building blocks of comparative government and international law. The restless organism of political science hovers over the Public Affairs Forum, snatching up radicals, right and left . . . And from the ordered mayhem troop squadrons of starry-eyed politicians . . their Weejuns pointing to the White House. Dr. Robbins L. Gates 78 Economics The gold standard shines through a criss-cross of practical values etched in dollar signs. Climbing the ladder of economics dizzy students explore the footholds of corporations — trusts — monopolies. The department is stocked with wilting newscasts of white-collar workers: General Motors up 3 points on the Dow- Jones average. Yet, after swinging glibly through classes on the scale of economy, even majors inevitably face the tipping of the bal a nee . . . when the bleak time beckons, and bills are due. Miss Lillian Rudescal Mr. John Chip Seagler 79 Sociology, Education, Psychology 80 Sociology With their stony idols of population, stratification and culture, the tribe of sociologists is a strange tribe indeed. Facing a blackboard dressed in chalk figures students safari through knotted jungles, hacking at a web of facts as they go. Wide-eyed, they witness the marriage rites of the primitive Tchambuli, then realize people are not always like those back home. I felt a little older this spring . . . and younger, too ... a gray- haired child. A jungle of thoughts grew in my mind, yet from that confusion flowered a new and mirror bright perspec- tive. 178 179 The rhinestoned crown of upperclassman was finally mine, and ' 68 was carved in gold on my ring. Next year is my last year . . . Then, morning songs of the churchbell and cadet boot staccato will sound only in the past. 180 JUNIOR CLASS Cecelia Acuff Lady Appleby Kathy Aure Sallie Barre ( f Georgeanne Bates Martha Blake Beverly Bland Lynn Boyd Grace Branch Barby Brown Mary Buvinger Pat Campbell Betty Carico Lee Carpenter Nancy Carrow Susan Chadwick ? a 182 Becky Chapman Sandra Charlton Betsy Clark Hallie Colhoun Cary Condon Lela Cowardin Barbara Craft Jane Crane Tricia Cromwell Cece Davis Dede Demme Irene Dingwall Betty Dobyns Kathy Dunbar Sue Dyer Fran Edmondson Judy Edwards Nancy Eriksen i f ::3S 183 Peggy Evans Norma Falkiner Deneen Fendig Vicki Fleming Fran Ford Judy Foster Susan Gamble Nancy Geiger Elizabeth Glazebrook Linda Goddin Tempe Grant Sharon Gray Connie Green Susan Grey Beth Hadden Michele Harbrook 184 Kay Hazelgrove Patty Hedden Diane Hillyer Sandy Hoback Marty Howard Blanche Humphreys Susan Hust Cathy Ikenberry tr. The yellow bricks of the school and the grey chimney spread of Staunton had not changed. The streets, laced with rough-stone walks, were the same, and the people were familiar strangers. A smiling rush of faces crowded the first days with laughter, and then, as always, the year sat back in its academic armchair. Fall classes drifted into a blur of windblown studies. Appleless Day came, and I unwrapped a red Wednesday to find rain, fun-flecked eyes and shiny talk. 192 193 194 While winter melted into spring, the Sophomore Show journeyed on a rehearsal-sore road to open- ing night. There all hopes crys- tallized in the fast break of applause. Days stretched longer, and the time came to pack memories for home ... I shook under the tumble of sad-happy goodbyes, then steadied as I walked toward the sequined years of the upper- classmen. m ' - ftfe::=r. It was raining the day I arrived. Windshield wipers swept paths for streams and thoughts. Smiles and hellos silvered dark corridors with welcome. This is your room, and these are your roommates. And our faces mirrored a wary curiosity. I tumbled in a waterfall blur of the first few weeks, and then I learned to walk lightly through each day. I held in hand a kaleidoscope of drowzing 8:30 ' s, smiling blind dates, and grey-stoned chapel services. Then came the nightmare drudgery of exams . . . which eased into the slow roll of spring classes, lazy after- noons, and yellow dusks. I swallowed fear to be hungry for newness . . . and the newness and the year went quickly. 213 FRESHMAN CLASS Carol Alspaugh Becky Armstrong Nancy Lee Arwood Anne Ballard Jean Barry Janet Bartholomew Carolyn Bass Anne Beatty Jane Bickel Windon Blanton Barbara Bobbitt Martha Booth Emily Borden Connie Bowen Tice Brandt Sis Bright 214 Linda Britt Barbara Butz Lois Chapman Elizabeth aridy Browning Carolyn Carleton Betsy Coblentz Cortright Emily Bryans Betsy Carpenter Cyndy Coleman Kathy Crawford Ann Bryce Betty Carter Marie Coppock Laura Croom Erica Davis 215 Sandra Davis Donna Dearman Judy Derkash Lynn DesPrez Alice Dibrell Ann Dillinger Sue Disque Zoe Durrell Alice Eichold Jill Eiseman Sharon Ellis Janet Ernst Nancy Escher Pam Evans Rita Fishel 216 r. ' . ' ,-c i n V ' . ' , ■■ ' • ' ?;■ - ' i n g l ' C l l M B .-i. ■ V 1 ■ V : V;• ' V ' v REFLECTIONS I saw Betsy Bell again for the first time this morning, cutting her craggy pattern into an oyster sky . . . The morning was veiled by my window screen. The sunrise splashed long bloody fingers on the wall . . . What a one way world . . . we tread single file along a path of crushed leaves and dirty snow. I never want to go back . . . except sometimes . . . just once, maybe twice ... to relive a love, to take back a hasty word ... to look at leaves, and trees, and swallows and people. My nose, flattened against the window pane, has made a clear circle in the center of my frosted breath. The chill of cool glass and pearly morning spreads around me. Once it was June; September is nearly over. A season ' s death is a cold hard knot in my throat, but a lighted autumn leaf fills me with warmth. ONB WAY lONOTBNm y I j Y , . iir.- rv From the disorder of a routine we flee . . . The chaos sends us running . . . running until we have no breath left and the air cuts sharply into our lungs. Up . . . down . . . round and round. There is no order today, or any day. Sometimes I think that the only way my path can take is down. 268 Run . . .walk ... it really doesn ' t matter . . . just get out . . . away from the closeness . . . the single-minded deter- mination to get some place, something . . . Recognition. Well what do you know. ' The sky still exists I learned to look up a long time ago . . . Still, every now and then, I enjoy my despair. 269 Storm clouds over there . . . Mist is already rolling across the valley. Rain, rain go ... it never worked when I was a child, Why now? The Nursery rhyme spins through my head . . . the lyric provoked by the miser- able greyness. Poets compare rain to slender silver ribbons. It falls like lead to me, nailing a cloud cover over the world. People seem out of focus ... a waterey screen blurs smiles, softens frowns. Hazy expressions flit over faces and bodies move in a damp parade. I would hate to be an umbrella . . . lashed by the needlepoint rain. If only it were a warm rain, a gentle spring rain . . . anything but these ceaseless lines of icy water. And then the sunshine . . . one long ray of late afternoon brilliance flung on the hillside in a careless spattering of gold . . . Efforts at creating, at thought, at speech, at wonder . . . trickle through my sleepy mind. I ask you what time it is . . . and wait for no answer. The book is open, your eyes are not. I sit and envy you silently. The sounds of study . . . you know them ... a sign ... a pencil scraping, a page turning . . . the watercolor wash of thought. The outside product of a great deal of insideness . . . A single life is a sonatine played against an overwhelmingly stacatto symphony. Pythagoras was right . . . there is music in the spheres. I hear it on dark nights when the wind blows and I play solitaire to keep from remembering . . . And I sleep. 272 273 What a wreck I made of it today . . . It . . . indefinite pronoun meaning everything. Sadness sings to a withered leaf, crumpled into a thoughtful debris. One road I didn ' t choose . . . a million decisions grow along it like dandelions. Dirt ruts lead to a skeleton of a house . . . with hollow eyes it sees a new view of the hill. Bound by the world in which I live ... to education ... to patriotism ... to motherhood . . I am chained to nothing but the sky. 275 We were friends you and I . . . sharing a hymnal and a popsicle. And we still are, I suppose ... in an ever widening circle of disappointment. Our chuminess is a limpid green, the pre-death hue on a color wheel . . . The friendship ' s there . . . shall we pretend regret that its nearly finished? Or shall we dry-eyed shake hands, part friends and serve together on the next committee. ' In the rush of people somewhere . . . in the crowds of stars and lesser beings rushing to the halls of ivy for the golden plate that culture brings, in the confused clamor that knowledge wrings from ignor- ance, please listen . . . sometime . . . for the sounds that lighted windows send to the four winds of the earth . . . and listen for the echoing answer to their questions. 276 277 278 In the Larger Sense There are hills to climb. Let us scale them with an inquisitive joy . . . with a vengeance. Take them like the conquistador his bounty, But willingly leave them a part of you . . . silently. Because, if you don ' t . . . They ' ll take it. Embrace and enfold the hills . . . Receive the gift they hold. Kathy Aure, ' 68 editor 279 A 1 • Winston -So l«m M HUNTER PUBLISHING COMPANY J • North Cafollna CHARLES R.
