Pink and green spring up from moist black loam and splash across the earth, heralding a new season, a new birth. Infant leaves throw lace patterns across the grass and provide seclusion for new-born fledglings. A young man ' s fancy. Dreams renewed. Sun and warmth. Earth rejoicing. Wisteria clusters climb and twine their way up lattice fences . Daffodils fleck the hillsides with yellow smiles. A cataract of moist wind sweeps through the valley in multicolored laughter. 53 54 June seventh drew nearer and the sun grew warmer. Finally, it even stayed sunny on weekends. Long and lazy afternoons, flower-filled mornings, cool evenings by an icy stream. Crowded calendars: May Day; picnics for the majors, and for the classes; comps and the Banquet; drawing for looms; planning for weddings and jobs and graduate school. And all as a golden early-summer light filtered across tangled forsythia and the lush stretch of green grass across the hill. !: J I — } — — ' — r Administration and Faculty Look back across a college generation, and four years telescope into an incredibly short time. But despite the brief span, the Mary Baldwin of September, 1961 and that of June, 1965 are not the same. These things, for example, are not: Six hundred fifty girls now climb the steps that four hundred fifty climbed then. The green grass stretches across our hillside from New Street east to Coalter, and Bailey is no longer off campus . In the ledger space called Total Assets, the auditor writes $5,990,361, almost twice the figure he recorded four years ago. And this June, for the first time. Dr. Taylor will marshal more than a hundred seniors into the Commencement procession as it leaves the Mirror Room. But the happy paradox about a college is that it can change without changing. In four years it grows, as it must grow, but the most important things remain. That is why, for this class and for its daughters through the years, Mary Baldwin will be always and never the same. Sayre Explores Man ' s Freedom Posing the question Is Freedom Possible? . Dr. Woodrow Wilson Sayre, former professor of philoso- phy at Tufts University, was wel- comed to the native city of his grandfather. President Woodrow Wilson, as he spoke at Mary Bald- win Wednesday, Feb, 24. Dr. Sayre, a lecturer on the Visiting Scholar Program, dis- cussed whether man and his ac- tions can be free, or whether they are merely the product of his physical and psychological circum- stances. His first consideration was the nature of Freedom . He ob- served that a child is not free be- cause he does what he is told; But when an adolescent believes that he has become free when he acts just opposite to what his par- ents wish, he is wrong. He is a slave, because his decisions are predetermined in reverse — his parents still cause his actions by their actions. Dr. Sayre then discussed the in- terrelationship of freedom and slavery in Greek and Christian thinking. Freedom in both cases can be obtained by one ' s enslaving himself to a greater cause. The (Continued on p. 4, col. 5 ' Practicing a scene from Clare Boothe Luce ' s The Women are Sophomores Susan Massie, 1., Leilh Sligler, Susan Palmer, Frances Wise, and Hope Allen. Looking back it seems as though the year won ' t stand still long enough to let us. It ' s too dynamic— and too full. The friendships, the weekends, the traumas, the pierced ears. Thou wast born of dreams, Mary Baldwin, Mary Baldwin. Betsy Bell in autumn brilliance, in winter starkness, in spring— green freshness. Gruesome hours in the library, breaks at Straw Corner, the library drive. If I don ' t get some mail tomorrow... Quarterlies, term papers, exams, quarterlies, term papers, exams. Lexington: 34 miles. New ideas and changed attitudes and developed perspectives. To borrow the phrase: progress is our most important product. Progress as students, as women, as people. There certainly were times for many of us when it seemed as though we ' d reached an impasse (on really bad days there was little argument that we ' d regressed). But in a longer view the disappointments and frustrations and anxieties fade into the shadows— and the spot- light falls on the steps taken forward. For the Class of ' 65, this long view stretches over four years— and how can there be any doubt that we progressed since 1961 on the Hill Top porch? And there is little doubt that we ' re many smiles, many thoughts, many hours, many encounters, many books, many beautiful days, many phone duties, many ove nights, and many decisions closer to fulfilling the potential that belongs to each of us. ' 65 in ' 61 278 ■I 279 It ' s been a swarm of impressions and of experiences and of lessons. A year that stands very much by itself— and at the same time so linked to the years behind it and so caught up already into the years to come. In terms of analogies: a metamorphosis, a kaleidoscope of tradition, yesterday, now, not for time but for eternity. There is no way to gather it all up into 280 pages. Then again, no group of words and pictures could capture it all. We each have our own personal store of memories— that The Bluestocking can be but a glimpse and a reminder is a tribute to the richness— and the diversity— of our life on the hill.
