Va., Friday, Oct. 25, 1963 No. 4 President Dean Plan For Indian Exchange President Samuel R. Spencer, Jr. and Dean Martha S. Grafton will attend a meeting in Washing- ton, D.C., Januai-y 13-15, to discuss new developments in the United States — India Woman ' s College Exchange Program. Six Indian colleges participating in the program were announced recently by Dr. William F. Quil- lian, Jr., president of Randolph- Macon Woman ' s College. Dr. Quil- lian is chairman of the group sponsoring the newly established program. The six Indian Colleges are In- draprastha College, Delhi; Isabella Thoburn College, Lucknow; Wom- en ' s Christian College, Madras; Queen Mary ' s College, Madras; Maharani ' s College, Bangalore; and University College for Wom- en, Hyderabad. Dr. Quillian, President Anne Pannell of Sweet Briar, and Chancellor Grellet Simpson of Mary Washington College have just returned from a six-weeks visit to India, during which they discussed the program with col- lege officials there. The six Indian colleges were chosen as a result of their visit. Government to Aid The U.S. Department of State has made a grant of $356,000 m rupees in support of the program. The U.S. -Indian Exchange proj- ect, to begin in 1964-65, will en- able six members of the faculty or staff from 13 participating U.S. colleges, including Mary Baldwin College, to serve for one year at one of the participating Indian col- leges. In exchange, six persons from the Indian colleges will serve annually in the U.S. colleges. Colleges to Alternate During the four-year program, each college will be represented in alternate years. The committee meeting in Washington in conjunction with the American Association of Col- leges will decide which faculty members will go to India and which American colleges will re- ceive Indian faculty, determine the rate of compensation, set up a permanent U.S. E.xecutive Com- mittee and select the team of three presidents to go to India in the fall of 1964 to visit the par- ticipating colleges. In addition to Mary Baldwin and Randolph-Macon, the partici- pating women ' s colleges in this country are Sweet Briar and Mary Washington, in Virginia; Agnes Scott College, Decatur, Ga.; Barnard College, N.Y.; Be nnett College, Greensboro, N.C. Also included are Connecticut College. New London. Conn.: Goucher College, Baltimore, Md.; Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Mass.; Queens College, Charlotte, N.C; Western College for Women, Oxford, Ohio; and Wheaton College, Norton, Mass. Politicians To Convene In 97 Days Only 97 days are left before Mary Baldwin College ' s mock Re- publican convention. Where are the politicians on campus? How do you feel on cur- rent national issues? Are you aware of your state ' s political problems? — Carolyn T. Smith, chairman of the steering commit- tee, directs these questions to stud- ents at MBC. Senator Thruston B. Morton of Kentucky and Congressmen John V. Lindsay of New York and Ger- ald R. Ford of Michigan are the choices proposed for the speaker at the MBC convention. The steer- ing committee has submitted these choices to the Speakers Bureau, a part of the National Republican Committee in Washington, D.C. The bureau does not know as vet whether Senator Morton will be available on the day of the MBC convention. Congressmen Lindsay and Ford are now being contacted by the bureau. Their re- plies will be forwarded to the steering committee as soon as they are received. These national committeemen head their respective committees: Margaret Thompson, credentials; Eleanor Poole, rules: Susan Thompson, platform; Anne Gordon Abbott, registration; and Nancy Kapp, publicity. Student Theater to Read lonesco ' s ' Rhinoceros ' ; Verstandig, Penn to Take Leading Roles in Play The Readers ' Theater at Mary Baldwin College will present Eu- gene lonesco ' s Rhinoceros at 7 p.m., November 25, in Hunt Lounge. The work of a contemporary avant - garde playwright, R h i - noceros is the first of lonesco ' s plays to be successfully staged on Broadway. The original cast fea- tured Zero Mostel in the lead role. Readei-s Theater will present a program December 5 of Christmas readings, including Eliot ' s Journey of the Magi and the Wakefield Second Shepherds Play. 236 Page Two CAMPUS COMMENTS Geyer Relates Piety Politics In New Book In this world exists a chaotic territory where religion and poli- tics are joined. How do these two areas form a bridge and how stable is and should it be? These are the main concerns of Dr. Alan Geyer, associate professor of po- litical science, in his book Piety and Politics. The official publishing date of the book is October 14. At this time there will be an autograph- ing party in the Mary Baldwin College bookstore from 3-5 p.m. Dr. Geyer, also an ordained Methodist minister, stated that the work on Piety and Politics goes back almost 10 years to 1955-56 and was not completed until 1961 The future is Dr. Geyer ' s main consideration. He shows the many opportunities Protestantism has to help shape world policy, and he urges the individual to take initia- tive and procedure. Goldwater Top Choice As candidates seeking the presi- dential nomination from the Re- publican party continue dramat- ically to toss their hats into the ring, and try with everything from suspicious promises of abol- ishing the graduated income tax to those tiresome tactics of hand- shaking and baby-kissing, an ob- scure political service operating on the campus of Mary Baldwin College released the results of its first vital survey. Senator Bari-y Goldwater, the voice of the conservatives, at present holds an impressive 4-1 lead over other Republican hope- fuls. Henry Cabot Lodge, Nelson Rockefeller, and William Scranton polled enough votes among the mock state committees to place themselves in a tie for second po- sition. The third most popular is Gov- ernor George Romney of Michi- gan. Political speculation has in- creased as the nation and the Re- publican party anticipate the final decisions to be made in February by MBC ' s mock Republican Con- vention. Annual Receives ' 63 Honor Rating The Bluestocking of 1963 has been awarded a First Class Honor Rating by the Associated Collegi- ate Press in comparison with year- books of other colleges with simi- lar enrollment. Eleanor A. Ostman was the judge for the Bluestocking and other comparable annuals. The judge pointed out that the strong point of the book was the candid pictures. The 1963 Bluestocking was jnder the leadership of Jean Wells, editor. J iXX- V Q vS ' ' P V i 0 V 0 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letter to Editor Stimulates Student Discussion on Chapel Dear Editor: In last week ' s Campus Com- ments Davyne Verstandig con- tributed a letter giving her rea- sons why compulsory chapel at- tendance should be done away with at Mary Baldwin. My first reaction to the article was excite- ment to find that a student had the courage to express what she be- lieved even though what she advo- cated obviously would be unpopu- lar with the administration. I am sure many people had this reac- Senior Rhymes Plea for Food Dear Editor: Forget the words Please pass the foodi ' ' They are extinct. no longer used. A Senior tion and did not bother to think about what the letter was really saying. Later I decided that I agreed with very little of what she had to say. Student attitude at chapel has been bad, undoubtedly, and oc casionally I have had the same feelings Davyne expressed, of be ing out of the mood for chapel (I wonder if it is possible for a person who is really a Christian to be out of the mood for chapel? These feelings I had were not the fault of the people who organize the chapel programs; and if they interfered with what I got out of the program it was my fault. My main point is this: you get out of something only what you put into it. A student who has within herself a reverent attitude can find meaning in our chapel programs if her neighbors are fast asleep or clawing each other ' s eyes out. Let us try to adopt a reverent attitude for ourselves; maybe our neighbors will catch on. Jean Lynn New loolc on campus? Heading the enfantes terribles is Miss Christiane Rimbault of Montpellier. France, When she is not teaching, Chris is usually m the lounge playing bridge, learn- ing the Oiseau (French for the Bird ) or helping the girls with language difficulties. Quick to assume her role as house mother, she once scaled a fire escape to her room on the second floor when the entire dorm was locked out during a meeting at Hilltop. After leading the 12 girls in a verse of the Marseil- laise, she opened the front door and shooed everyone off to bed. Despite the inevitable problems of speaking a foreign tongue, the inhabitants of La Maison Fran- caise have learned to laugh at their mistakes ana are slowly breaking down the formidable communication barrier. Although MORGAN Music Center everything in records music FOR THE BEST IN PASTRY — Visit — Carl ' s Pastry Shop they are permitted to speak English on the telephone, the girls will sometimes answer with, Ici, La Maison Francaise!, much to the bewilderment of many a long- distance operator. The night- watchman is often greeted by, Bon soir, monsieur!, from late studiers in the lounge. Lucille Newman, the French House maid, is ever ready with a, Bonjour, comment allez-vous?, in the morning. She is learning the language from French gram- mar records, just so I can say a few things. A new experience for most of the girls is playing bridge in French. Sometimes, however, mis- understandings can lose a game, such as when one ' s partner raises a bid. thinking it is in diamonds and one has bid spades. By now many of the French House inhabitants have become ad- dicted to the Continental break- fast served by Mrs. Viola Becks at the sidewalk cafe. Besides fill- ing this capacity, the kitchen will be used every Thursday night when the girls will have supper together. The meal will be brought from Hunt Hall and served by the girls. In an organizational meeting, held in September, the dorm de- cided to hold dorm devotions in French every other Thursday night. Also, the girls will select and buy prints by French artists for the main salon Thev hope soon to begin a French library and a collection of French records. Freshman Class Boasts 114 Enroll in Advanced Courses One hundred fourteen students in the Freshman Class at Mary Baldwin College are taking ad- vanced courses, according to a survey taken by Campus Com- ments. Two history precepts contain freshmen who have had European history in high school. These two classes, including 29 students, are conducted in a different manner from the other European history- precepts. In the foreword, Mrs. Gilbert 16 freshmen are enrolled in the sophomore English survey course. Nineteen are taking the advanced freshman English course. Eighteen freshmen are taking advanced mathematics. In the Spanish department 13 first-year students are taking Ad- vanced Composition and Conver- sation , and one was placed in an advanced literature course. Six freshmen were selected for advanced art classes; two are in advanced music classes and one in an advanced biology class. CAMPUS COMMENTS, Page Four New II , , . Spencer Hall! A matter of vital interest to the student body is the nam- ing of Mary Baldwin College ' s newest dormitory. After much thought and consideration we urge as a timely and appropriate step a permanent embodiment of the 1962 Bluestocking dedi- cation to Dr. Samuel Reid Spencer, Jr. The citation recognized Dr. Spencer as an understanding and determined man, the worthy administrator who, through his program of New Di- reactions, has shaped the destiny of Mary Baldwin College. Because of his sincere and continued interest in students, Dr. Spencer deserves recognition for his success in focusing upon immediate questions as well as long range goals. Be- cause of his personal integrity, evident in all new directions of the physical campus, cultural opportunities and academic ex- pectations, the College must cite Dr. Spencer in a fitting man- ner. Because of his exemplary Christian leadership resulting in a stimulating and personable community, Dr. Spencer mer- its immediate and lasting tribute. The highest and only fitting honor for the outstanding executor of a challenging program of growth is a building bearing his name. Such dedications — not posthumous — are customary at many colleges. The newest building at Hollins College, the Jesse Ball duPont Chapel, is named in honor of Mrs. Alfred I. duPont, a member of the Board of Trustees since 1944. Westhampton College ' s Keller Hall, the student activities building, honors Dean May Keller. A second build- ing at the University of Richmond denoting similar esteem is the Luther H. Jenkins Theater. We therefore propose that the Board of Trustees establish in 1963 Samuel Reid Spencer Hall.
