At Mary Baldwin, a student government has been in existence for twenty-nine years and in that time has shown itself to be indispensable in the college community. ( )ur Student Government Association has l)een acti e and dynamic primar- ily because of two factors. These are the character of the college administration, which has maintained a full awareness of the value and importance of the asso- ciation, and the support of the students themselves, who have been vitally in- terested in realizing the goals a student government should declare for itself. Without tile interest of the two groups, no association would long remain ef- f ■ goNernniental strucluri ' consists of three branches: the Student Board, the central co-ortlinating and legislative body ; the House Presidents ' which concerns itself mainly with the students ' problems of personal individuals and groups: and the Judiciary Board, the student nstanth ' cndeaxors to instill thi ' ideals of the Honor .S stem in :tive. The which i Council, adjustment court, whic the students. The Student (Government officers serving on these three branches represent the student body in many capacities, and have as their goal the integration and evaluation of the college program in every respect. They realize that the biggest challenge to student government is that its job is a never-ending one. Its projects and goals must be constantlx ' broadened to meet the needs of new student genera- lions. The broad objeiiive of our Student (io ernment Association is to encourage the indi i(lual in the college comnninity to de elop hir full potentialities. This t.isk i till- eh:illrn.!4e which we acceiit and tv to meet to the best of our abilities. 98 STUDENT BOARD T ' at Sclu ' ii(lt.-I Vicc-Prcshlriil Sittdciit (.iovcriiincnt .Issockitutii Sur Kitcliit.- Secretary Student Cnvernnient . THE RECIPIENTS OF THE AWARD 1957 COMMENCEMENT Julianne Rand Strong in her convictions, excellent in her studies, outstanding in her leadership, lur in- fluence has been felt in every area of cam] jus life. Endowed with an unusual sense of per- spective and proportion, she has made difficult tasks seem less difficult, for to them she has brought firmness of purpose and intelligence, coupled with the wit and charm that are so much a part of her. We honor her as a char- acter, as a leader, as a personality. In token of that honor, the Algernon Svdne - .Sullivan medallion is awarded to Julianne Rand. Dr. Richard Potter Although a l)us_ - past(jr and ecclesiastic, he iccepted the mandate of the Hoard of Trustees n an hour of neeil and ser ed the College through his talents of leadership, counsel, and encouragement. For an entire session he has given this ministry without remuneration, be- cause of his faith in higher education as an es- sential function of the Churcli, .ind because, as a member of the Hoard, he had already found place fin his shoulders for the burdens of the institution which confronts him through the window of his study at the church. In conferring this award, the b ' .iculty of Alary I ' aldwin College expresses its gratitude not only for the service of the year now con- cluding, but for the prospect of continuing coun- sel and help in all that relates to the well-being of our college. We recommend Staunton to prospective students and their families as an excellent place to shop, as well as an excellent place for college. Staunton is the hub of business activity in the thriving and beautiful Shenandoah Valley, and has excellent stores, busi- ness firms, hotels and motels and service facilities. Many of the firms have served Mary Baldwin stu- dents for generations, and have expert knowledge of styles and prices that appeal to the Mary Baldwin student. Students and visitors are invited to take ad- vantage of these facilities and to avoid the problem of advance shopping and long distance shipment of lug- gage. JUDY NORMAN Business Manager.
