IN MEMORIAM ELIZABETH NOTTINGHAM DAY Professor of Art, Mary Baldwin College 194] -- 1956 She was known to the professional world as Elizabeth Nottingham, but to those who knew her, simply as Mrs. Day - Her name implied a great deal more. Although she considered herself a teacher, a housewife, and a mother as well as an artist, it is hard to think of her as any one of these roles apart from the others. For Mrs. Day instituted herself among people in every way beyond the call of duty. As a teacher Mrs. Day gave to her students an inspired outlook on life in addition to the course; as an artist she recorded perfectly the rich return and enthusiasm she got from living. She understood life to be a great storehouse of opportunities and she invested her interest in all of them that could concern her. For Elizabeth Nottingham the world was made with paint and canvas, and for this artist recognition meant a comprehension of a way of life. For Mrs. Day a way of life was an existence for others, and for this woman existence meant life. 28
