Although she considered herself a teacher, a housewife, and a mother as well as an artist, it is hard to think of her as any one of these roles apart from the others. For Mrs. Day instituted herself among people in every way beyond the call of duty. As a teacher Mrs. Day gave to her students an inspired outlook on life in addition to the course; as an artist she recorded perfectly the rich return and enthusiasm she got from living. She understood life to be a great storehouse of opportunities and she invested her interest in all of them that could concern her. For Elizabeth Nottingham the world was made with paint and canvas, and for this artist recognition meant a comprehension of a way of life. For Mrs. Day a way of life was an existence for others, and for this woman existence meant life. 28 m ,. , ■ y % ■  SENSOR CLASS OFFICERS BARBARA RUSSELL President BETSY CRAWFORD JOAN PERRY HENDERSON [ r ice-President Secretary HELEN THOMPSON Treasurer MISS HUMPHREYS Sponsor Colors of the Class i 1957- Lavender and hit 30 ATTENDANTS Barbara Bishop Lucy Forsyth BEVERLY BISHOP Victoria, Texas Candidate for Bachelor of Arts Degree History 3] PAULA LEE BRANCH Dallas, Texas Candidate for Bachelor of Arts Degree English ATTENDANTS Toni Baldwin Carolyn Shults 32 JEAN MARY BREEDEN Spartanburg, South Carolina Candidate for Bachelor of Arts Degree Psychology ATTENDANTS Ann Fry Lilalee Guerrant 33 BARBARA LAWRENCE BULLOCK Norfolk, Virginia Candidate for Bachelor of Arts Degree Music ATTEND AXTS Diane Hudgins Anne Pierce 34 ATTENDANTS Isabel Ewart Carole Griffin SARA DUNINGTON BURWELL Wirtz, Virginia Candidate for Bachelor of Arts Degree . At Marv Baldwin, student government has been in existence for twen- ty-eight years and in that time lias shown itself to be indispensable in the college community. Our Student Government Association depends not only on the Student Government officers, hut on each student in the college who is automatically a member of the organization. Without this interest from the student bod) and the all important interest of the college administration, no student government would realize its goals. Tlie structure of our student government consists of three branches: the Student Hoard, which is the central co-ordinating and legislative body: the Judi- ciary Hoard, the student court, which constantly endeavors to instill the ideals of the Honor system in the students: the House Presidents ' Council which con- cerns itself mainly with the students ' problems of personal adjustment as in- dividuals and groups. These three branches together have as their goal the integration and evalua- tion of the college program in every respect. The broad objective of our Stu- dent Government Association is to encourage the individual in the college com- munity to develop her full potentialities. This never ending task is the challenge which we accept and try to meet to the best of our abilities. ss STUDENT BOARD Nancy Switzer Vice-President Student Government . tssociation Pat Schendel Secretary Student Government . All activities of our organization arc- proposed to meet as nearly as possible, the needs which we feel in our lives for worship, lor study from the Christian prospective, and for action which is moti- vated by a concern for all people. Because our needs and circumstances arc- constantly changing, the program of the Y is constantly altered. Hut the main true and unique purpose remains always the same. Hence, we feel a real part ol the past tradition of the Christian world and of its present situation; like- wise, a responsible hearer of its future continuance and strength. Each person on our campus is in a community of people who find meaning in the Christian fellowship, as an integral part of all phases of life. Whether one finds her fullest and most creative life in class, in Vespers, in Dorm devo- tions, in discussion groups, in community service , in general campus life, or in a well rounded balance of all. she is recognized in the Christian community a- an individual of significant worth in tin- eyes of God and of man. 98 CABINET Nancy Rhoads . A limited number of seniors are elected each May to membership in the society. The annual meeting is held during the commence- ment season when newly elected members are initiated. Alumnae members are invited to be present for this special meeting. The graduates of the University Course of the Augusta Female Seminary and Mary Baldwin Seminary were elected to the Honor Society in May, 1942, in connection with the Centennial celebration of the school. Members of the Class of 1956 elected to the Honor Society Laura Clausen Jeanette Fisher Mary Augusta Colonna Ellen Gibson Shaw 104 ALGERNON SYDNEY SULLIVAN AWARD The New York Southern Society and Mary Baldwin Col- lege have jointly arranged for the presentation of two medal- lions at Commencement each year to those who. because of the quality of their lives, are judged to be appropriate recipi- ents of the award. While the award recognizes accomplish- ment, unselfish service is the fundamental principle, as this was the keynote of the life of Algernon Sydney Sullivan, whose name the award hears. Usually one medallion is presented to a member of the graduating class and one to some other person who lias inter- est in and association with the College. The annual 1956 award was presented to Nancy Ruston, the senior recipient : Excellent student and outstanding leader in campus life, she has devoted her four years at Mary Baldwin College to the service of others. Characterized at the end of her freshman year as ' one of the finest girls in her class, ' continuously she has justified this characterization, quietly and unostentatiously serving the community. In recog- nition of that service and in acknowledgment of her strength and wholesome influence in her campus life, and in anticipa- tion of even greater future service, the Algernon Sydney Sul- livan Medallion is awarded to Nancy Virginia Buston. Nancy Buston To Mrs. Peterson, an alumna: A born teacher who has never taught in an educational institution, her whole life exem- plifies the best principles of the teaching profession, setting an example of service to humanity that few can equal. As a young woman she founded in her home town the Shakespeare Club and an (lid Ladies ' Home which now bears her name. After her marriage she was for years an active participant in the Woman ' s Suffrage Movement; co-founder and promoter of the Child Health Organization, which preceded the health bureau in Washington. In between these activities she found time to work long and hard for Tsuda College for women in Japan, to publish original poetry, and to translate poetry from Latin and French. She has always been a generous friend to the unfortunate and has always fought injustice. Because of her unselfish service to others and because she exemplifies the highest ideals of Christian living, the Faculty awards the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Medallion to Antoinette Rotan Peterson of the class of 1887. Since then it has provided Cor the students an outlet for individual expres- sion through creative writing. Although the quality of the ma- terial has tuned itself to the cur- rent ideas and literary trends of each passing year, it has always been a reflection of the literary taste and artistic interest in the college. The Miscellany is a mem- ber of the Virginia Intercollegi- ate Press Association and ni the Associated Collegiate Press. 115 116 RECREATION ASSOCIATION SALENDA SMITH President The purpose of the Mary Baldwin Recreation Association reads from the constitution as follows: — The purpose of this Association shall be to develop interest and participa- tion in a diversified program of recreational activities, to promote a spirit of good sportsmanship, and to cultivate a spirit of co-operation and fellowship, ithin tlie campus life. If a girl makes use of the diversified athletic program offered, she will find this purpose to l e fulfilled for her. Almost all major and minor sports are of- fered, and those who have never played are taught in order that they may im- prove their playing, and that they may also find enjoyment in sports. Sportsmanship seems to he synonymous with athletics. Co-operation and consideration for others are essential in both team and individual sports and nothing is more frowned upon in games than an exhibition of poor sportsman- ship, a poor loser or winner, or an unnecessarily rough player. The Association plans the program with the primary emphasis upon enjoyable recreation, and feels that participation, whether active or as a spectator, is more important than the winning of a game. US R. A. OFFICERS Salenda Smith President Judy Gallup ' ice-President Joyce Holt Secretary Ann 1 ' eterson Treasurer Peggy Hankins Publicity Chairman Judy Norman Irish Clan Leader Barbara Kohlsaat Scotch Clan Leader Left to Right: Judy Gallup, Barbara Kohlsaat, Ann Peterson, Salenda Smith, Judj Norman, Joyce Holt, Peggy Hankins. 119 IRISH CLAN JUDY NORMAN Leader The Irish Clan Council con- sists of Judy Norman, leader, Ada Lou Worth, publicity man- ager, and the Irish sports lead- ers. Organized as a group in 1954, the clan works in co-oper- ation with the R. A. Council in the Recreation Association activ- ities. Tin- leader promotes in- terest and co-ordinates the vari- ous activities. The publicity manager is in charge of making posters and promoting general enthusiasm within the clan and in competition with the Scotch. An innovation of this year was the combined Scotch-Irish party given for the faculty, staff, and students in the Club. 120 SCOTCH CLAN The Scotch Clan, led by Bar- bara Kohlsaat, continues to play a large role in the sports life oi Mary Baldwin. Each sport is headed by an elected sports lead- er who organizes practices and promotes general enthusiasm. Due to the constitutional change this year each member must par- ticipate in one Recreation Asso- ciation sponsored activity, which may be a team or individual sport, in order to remain in the clan. Our social highlight of the year was a part) ' , jointly held with our friendly rivals, the Irish. BARBARA KOHLSAAT Leader 121 HOCKEY ANN MAXWELL Irish Leader ELIZABETH PLOWMAN Scotch Leader Concerning the true derivation of the game of hockey, there is some con- troversy. There is every reason to believe that hockey is of Greek origin, al- though the only evidences of that fact today are the figures of hockey players in old Greek friezes. Some writers prefer to consider hurley, an old Irish game, the first reference to which is found in the will of the Irish king, Cathair Mor in 148 A. I)., as the forerunner of hockey. An early Scotch game known as shinty was in all probability the direct ancestor of the modern game. In London the same game was known as hackie. while in Wales during the same period, the game of handy bore a close resemblance to the ancestor of hockey. The weather is a large factor in conducting hockey successfully ami in many sections of this country the sport cannot he promoted at all. Here, the hockey season lasts from September to November, weather permitting. Under the com- bined leadership of Ann Maxwell, Irish captain, and Libby Plowman, Scotch captain, a tournament of three games was played, the team winning two out of three being the winner. This season the first was tied, 1-1, and the Irish won the remaining two, one by default and the other, 2-0. 122 BASKETBALL ANNE COLEMAN Irish Leader LAURA WILLIAMS Scotch Leader Basketball is the result of an experiment by IV. Naismith to develop an in- door game to till in the seasons between football and baseball. When originated by Dr. Naismith in 1892, the game was played with nine to fifty players on a side, peach baskets served as goals, and a football was u sed for the ball. The most drastic changes in the game came during the first two years of its existence. The number of players was reduced to nine almost immediately, then seven, and in 1894, to five. The value of the game for girls was soon recognized, and in 1899, the women ' s rules were formulated. The 1956-57 season was led by Skip Williams. Scotch leader, and Anne Coleman, Irish leader. Tlie season was the month of February and a tourna- ment of three games was played. 123 TENNIS JANICE GREGORY Irish Leader ANNE McCLUNG Scotch Leader Lawn tennis is a comparatively new sport, though its origin from royal or court tennis can be traced back for centuries. It stems from royalty, yet it is one of the most democratic sports in which one may participate. The birth of lawn tennis was in 1873 in Wales at a garden party and ap- peared under the name of sphairistike. By 1874. the game of tennis spread quickly and it was then that an American. Miss Mary Outerbridge, brought the game to the United States. Popularity of tennis developed quickly, and with time came changes in rules and dimensions of the court, until now it is a national game and has reached such heights as the Wimbledon and American National championships. In the spring, under the leadership of Anne MrClung, Scotch captain, and Ian Gregory, Irish captain, a tournament was played between the two clans. 124 VOLLEYBALL HELEN SMITH Irish Leader DOTTIE HAYDEN Scutch Leader Volleyball was originated by Mr. William G. Morgan at the Holyoke, Mas- sachusetts Young Men ' s Christian Association in 1895. In his search to find a sport requiring sufficient activity to be interesting, yet not as strenuous as bas- ketball, Mr. Morgan devised the game of volleyball. With the impetus given the game through Y. M. C. A. promotion, the growth in popularity was rapid. It was used extensively in recreation programs throughout World War I and hundreds of leagues were organized. In 1924, separate rules for women were published and thus it has been demonstrated by wide usage that volleyball is a good game for women as well as men. This year the competition was keen enough so that there were two teams from each ' clan, organized by Dottie Hayden, Scotch leader, ?nd Helen Smith, Irish leader. The result of the season was a tie, with the Irish B team win- ning two out of three games, and the Scotch A team also winning two out of three games. 125 RECREATIONAL SPORTS CAROLINE HUFFSTUTLER Irish Leader ANN COOKE St Otch Leader The recreational spurts include pool, badminton, ami table tennis. Under the leadership of Ann Cooke and Caroline Huffstutler, Scotch and Irish cap- tains, various tournaments were organized and played. Badminton, which is derived from Battledore and Shuttlecock and the game, Poona, came to us from England as did many of our favorite sports. However, the popularity of badminton in the United States has been latent until recent years when the interest in carry-over sports developed great impetus due to increased leisure and the desire for co-recreational activities. The fact that badminton may be a mild game or a very strenuous sport, depending entirely upon the skill of the player, makes it one of the most popular sports in the school and college program. Table tennis, first termed pingpong, was for some time chiefly a parlor pas- linie. Inly fifteen years ago the rules advised skirts for women that clear the ground, and spoke of it as the poor man ' s billiards. Good-bye to all that, for lodav it is a big time sport. 126 SOFTBALL MARTHA CAPLINGER Irish Leader CHARLOTTE COOPER Scotch Leader Ball throwing as a spurt has been practiced since the time of the Greeks. Softball, like many of the highly technical sports which we enjoy today, devel- oped from games of early origin. Baseball, the parent of Softball, has been officially declared to be the inven- tion of Colonel Aimer Doubleday, who devised the diagram of bases and posi- tions in 1839. Preceding baseball, the games of rounders, an English game, cat and town hall were the most popular hall games. The game of Softball has no official inventor. It has grown from a group of games, variously known as kitten hall, playground hall, diamond hall, indoor baseball, and others. In 1923, rules were published to standardize the game, hut it was not until 1932 however, that the name softball was officially adopt- ed. Sports leaders, Martha Caplinger, Irish, and Charlotte Cooper, Scotch, or- ganized the season, and a tournament was played in the early spring. 127 SWIMMING PAT ROBINSON Irish Leader ■H L h. MACKEY NALL Scotch Leader Swimming has and continues to hold a most important place in the pro- gram ni Physical Education. Doubtless one reason for this is that swimming is not a matter of a formal class but a useful and delightful sport in every-day life, as well as an important safety device. Not only in swimming itself but rather in all water sports, there is the satisfaction of individual effort combined with relaxation which makes this activity truly recreational and one which de- servedly ranks high in popularity. Even in the early days when an extremely restricting costume was required for women, swimming was mentioned as a most beneficial form of exercise. Since then, there has been the development of an un-numbered variety of strokes, stunt and formation swimming, and also swimming in regard to form and speed. Thus, led by Mackey Nail, Scotch captain, and I ' at Robinson, Irish captain, a swimming meet was organized between the two teams. 128 MODERN DANCE GROUP Salenda Smith, Reba Russell, Ann Peter: DOLPHINS Lynne Foster, Carolyn Griffis, Mackey Nail. The Chief Marshal is elected by the student body from the rising Senior Class. The other marshals are elected l v their respective classes and they, in turn, select the ushers. A marshal or usher is chosen fur her grace, poise, courtesy, and charm. Holding this position is an honor hut also hard work. These girls serve at many of the school functions such as the King Series, school plays, programs of cam- pus organizations and commencement week-end. The girls always do a wonderful job in helping the students and guests of the college and by aiding in many ways to see thai the functions run smoothly. 133 MAY QUEEN ELIZABETH CRAWFORD PERRY 134 SENIOR ATTENDANTS KATHARINE THORINGTON BARBARA RUSSELL 135 JUNIOR JANICE GREGORY MARY JONES 136 ATTENDANTS i MEREDITH WEST PEGGY FLYTHE 137 SOPHOMORE LINDA WATKINS JANE REID 138 ATTENDANTS JOYCE HOLT PATTY FULBRIGHT 139 FRESHMAN BARBARA JUDD PENNEY COX 140 ATTENDANTS MARILYN BELL NANCY GARRARD 141 MAY DAY 1957 In connection with the May Day Com- mittee, the 1957 Bluestocking chose the May Queen and her court as its Feature Section. The Queen and her two senior attendants were chosen from the Senior Class by pop- ular vote, as were four representatives from each of the other classes. The May Day fete was held this year on May fourth, in the Amphitheatre behind the Athletic Field. After the coronation, a modern dance pageant, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was presented. One familiar example is PRINTING. Once editor, once compositor, or press- man catches the spirit of the shop, the spell is seldom broken. Like the odor of a camp fire, or a whiff of salt air, the beloved tang of printer ' s ink, symboli- cal of a great profession, gets into your heart and soul. School Annuals, Magazines, Newspapers and Special Printing, all smack of it. Tt is an invisible link that binds all intelligence together. It is the stimulus for creation in business or romance. This craftsmanship, this devotion to service and alert- ness to business needs, has nourished and developed an enormous industrial vitality, and whichever way the course of the future runs, the printer will always find himself able to adapt his helpfulness to new opportunity. Years of experience have taught us! Printing Pays Us Only When It Pays Yon!
