Our association lias been active and dynamic primarily because of two factors. These are the character of the col- lege administration, which has maintained a full awareness of the value and im- portance of the Student Government Association, and the students themselves who have been vitally interested in realizing the goals a student government should sel up for itseli . have been the integration of all the campus activities overall campus program, as it helps to enrich the stu- intellectual development. ( ur main objecth es and the evaluation of the dent ' s spiritual, social, ani The governmental structure consists of three branches: the Student Board, which is the central co-ordinating and legislative body; the Judiciary Board, the student court, which constantly endeavors to instill the ideals of the Honor Sys- tem in the students; the Mouse Presidents ' Council which concerns itself mainly with the students ' problems of personal adjustment as individuals and groups. The Student Government officers serving on these three branches represent the studenl body in many capacities. They realize that the biggesl challenge to student government is that its job is a never-ending one. Its projects and i, r(,:us must be constantly broadened to meet the needs of the new student generations. AH activities of our organization are proposed to meet as nearly as possible, the needs which we feel in our lives for worship, for study from the Christian prospective, and for action which is moti- vated by a concern for all people. Because our needs and circumstances are constantly changing, the program of the Y is constantly altered. But the main true and unique purpose remains always the same. Hence, we feel a real part of the past tradition of the Christian world and of its present situation; like- wise, a respi risible hearer of its future continuance and strength. Each person on our campus is in a community oi people who find meaning in the Christian fellowship, as an integral part of all phases of life. Whether one finds her fullest and most creative life in class, in Vespers, in Dorm devo- tions, in discussion groups, in community service, in general campus life, or in a well-rounded balance of all, she is recognized in the Christian community as an individual of significant worth in the eyes of God and of man. v CABINET Laura Clausen President Blanche Gambrill Vice-President, Chairman of the Publicity Committee I lizabeth Ann Withrow Secretary, Chan-man of the Vespers Committee Charlotte Cooper Treasurer, ( hairman oj the Finance Committee Sara Burwell Chairman of World Relatedness Committee Bettye Anne 1 1 nil Chairman of Social Responsibility Nancy Williams Chairman of Campus and Personal . He came here at the age of 18 and was on campus constantly thereafter, lie worked his way up from tying the principal ' s shoes and waxing the floors to his final position of superintendent of buildings and grounds and general mechanic. Horn September 11, 1887 in Augusta County, about ten miles outside of Staunton at the community of Spring Hill, he has made his home there all his life. He was married forty-four years ago to Ann Bliss, also a native Augustan. They are the parents of nine children, five girls and four boys. Mr. Crone ' s private life has been spent in rearing his family, fishing in his leisure time, and raising chickens. As a youth he carved something of a name for himself as a baseball pitcher for seven or eight years with the Middle River Ball Club. He has seen many phases of academic and social life changed since he first arrived fifty years ago when the school was known as Mary Baldwin Seminary. He likes to recall all of these evolutionary changes. Mr. Crone said, at the end of his half-century mark on the Mary Baldwin Campus, I want tn retire after fifty nice years on the campus. He plans to return to fishing, do some gardening, and catch up on sonic odd jobs around the house. 118 RECREATION ASSOCIATION PAT BOWIE President The purpose of the Mary Baldwin Recreation Association reads from the constitution as follows : — The purpose of thi Association shall be to develop interest and participa- tion in a diversified program of recreational activities, to promote a spirit of good sportsmanship, and to cultivate a spirit of co-operation and fellowship, within the campus life. If a girl makes use of the diversified athletic program offered, she will hnd this purpose to he fulfilled for her. Almost a ' l major and minor sports are offer- ed, and those who have never played are taught in order that they may improve the calibre of their playing, and that they may also find enjoyment in sports. Sportsmanship seems to he synonymous with athletics. Co-operation and consideration for others are essential in both team and individual sports and nothing is more frowned upon in games than an exhibition of poor sportsman- ship, a poor loser or winner or an unnecessarily rough player. In order that the Recreation Association may he comprised only of active or interested members, it is required that each girl participate in ten hours each semester of athletic activity and uphold the purpose of the Association at all times. Five of the ten hours may be earned by attending athletic events in the capacity of a spectator. The Association believes that participation, whether active or as a spectator, is more important than the winning of a game. 120 R. A. Once editor, once compositor, or press- man catches the spirit of the shop, the spell is seldom broken. Like the odor of a camp fire, or a whiff of salt air, the beloved tang of printer ' s ink, symboli- cal of a great profession, gets into your heart and soul. School Annuals, Magazines, Newspapers and Special Printing, all smack of it. It is an invisible link that binds all intelligence together. Tt is the stimulus for creation in business or romance. This craftsmanship, this devotion to service and alert- ness to business needs, has nourished and developed an enormous industrial vitality, and whichever way the course of the future runs, the printer will always find himself able to adapt his helpfulness to new opportunity. Years of experience have taught us! Printing Pays Us Only ll ' hcn It Pays Yon!
