Professor of Psyclioloi y and Education JJeoical ' i on The 1952 edition of the Mary Baldwin BLUESTOCKING is dedicated to one who came to the College in September of 1939, already an educational leader in the community. Since that time, his contributions to us have been not only in the field of Education and Psychology, but he was also instru- mental in initi_ating the King Series, which have brought additional culture and entertainment to the people of Staunton as well as to the students of Mary Baldwin. We know him to possess a wonderful understanding, a perpetual good humor and a smile for all. We have reference to in particular . . Dr. H. L. Bridges . orewor 9 Faculty and Classes, Activities, Features and Sports five little grains, five grains of Time the irreplaceable minutes we have spent sift softly down one by one in a slow stream into the abysm of the empty hour-glass and spill then into the past the many accomplishments of the year. (Jne hundred and twenty-four strong we numbered in Septemljer ' 49, but now even with larger pictures, we can ' t cover three pages of the annual zvc have published ! ( )h well, it was quantity , not quality we lost. One (if the things loved best about M. 1 ' .., is the fact that its size enables the girls to mal e many close fri ' ndships during their time here. With the special size of the Class of ' 53 we have found ihis to be most true. We are closer this year. Ciirls are more willing to do things that they never would have done before . . . just for the sake of the Class. Indeed, Time was not uncompensating! W ' e, who ha e nut much longer to lie with you as Juniors, do wish but one thing: that the rising Juniors will bring with them their quality (of which they have a super-abundance) and a little more (jf that quantity that we lacked. Don ' t too many of you all think it would be more fun to be a lost Co-ed in a big University, or wildly negotiate matrimonial bonds. Your Class comes too close to dying out! Re brave, be fearless, be tough, be true — without much ef- fort, the Juniors conld outnumber the Seniors next year! Time c ocs you say? It is not the responsibility of the Faculty, the Trustees, the Alumnae or the Stu- dent Council, but the indi idual res])onsiliilit - of each and every girl. At Mary i ' laldw ' in we feel that eac h student i mature enoujih to assume full responsibility of her actions ; therefore throutihout a girl ' s career here at our college, we endeavor to guide each in(hvi(hial into a fuller reali?ation of honor and cooperation as a basis of jier life. The Board of Trustees granted tjie charter of .Student Government to the College — which has, in turn, given it to the Association. The .Student Govern- ment Association considers itself extremely fortunate in having the sincere back- ing and interest of the College Administration. ' e feel deeply the need for wise guidance and foresight of people who have worked with students for years. Honor, the basis of our Student Government, is the living force of our life at Mary Baldwin. It is not solely the College that backs us but we, the students, that must back the College. Each student must decide whether her lo}-alties lay solely with herself or also with the college community of which she is such a vital part. We realize that no one is perfect, and this sense of inadequacy and of a need for outside help has drawn the Student body into a striving for that which is of v;due, jiurpose, and meaning in life. Therefore, . ' is a member of the -Student (Government Association, each girl solemnly pledges that : Believing in the principles of Student Government, I pledge myself to up- hold the ideals and regulations of the Association of Mary Baldwin College. I recognize the principles of honor and cooperation as the basis of our life to- gether and shall endeavor faithfully to order my life acconlingh- and to encour- age others to fultill the ideals of the honor system. 82 Ljovernmenl Of ssocLaiLon He First Roiu : Flossie inihcrly, Ann Shaw, Mary Hnniliaruer, F.lsie Nelnis Second R(I ' m: Mitty McClung, Betty Lou Gaulding, Ktliel Snicak, Ann Brown Third R(nv. Each club has its own purpose and a girl chooses the one in which she is most interested. A genuine interest and appreciation of music is shown through the Music Cluh, the Chapel Clinir, Ihr Organ (iuild. and the (ike Cluh. The Music Club meets monthly and holds receptions following the concerts at the college. The Chapel Choir is made up of selected voices from the Glee Club, and it has an important part in our Chapel services during the week. The Organ Guild is a small organization made up of students interested in studying organ. It is affiliated with the American Guild of Organists. The Glee Club is under the direction of Mr. Gordon Page. It is made up of sixty voices selected by tryouts at the beginning of the school year. The Glee Club presents Christ- mas and spring concerls, and joint concerts with men ' s college Glee Clubs. Our cabin, Chip Inn, supplies many pleasant hours of picnicing and good fun for the students, ll is located about twenty miles from Staunton at the foot of the Rlue Ridge mountains. Our new club is the center of mcjst of the ac- ti ities (jn the campus. The Club House Conunittee sees that the building is kept clean, and that the rules for the club are enforced. The Day .Student Cluh is organized cliiel ' l} ' for the purpose of giving day students the opportunity to participate as a group in the various activities on camp- us. Miss F annie Strauss is their sponsor. The Seta Beta Beta is a National Hon- orary Biological Fraternity. Its purpose is to promote the dissemination of scienti- fic truth, and to encf)urage biological investigation. Le Cerle Francois is made up of girls having had at least two years of French and showing an interest in the language. All meetings are conducted in French and Miss Clare Flansburgh is the sponsor. The Curtain Callers acts as a producing group in connection with the drama department. It offers an opportunity for students not enrolled in those courses, as well as drama students, to follow their interests in things theatrical. The International Relations Club promotes interest in world affairs. Movies and discussions are included on their program. The clul) is sponsored by the Carnegie Fndowment for International peace. In recent years the place of the Dance in the Ameri- can life has been revaluated and it is now being studied more and more by peo- ple who have no professional aspirations. The Greeks long ago recognized it as a means of grace. We of toda - are realizing that the value of the Dance lies not only in its physical exertion, but also in the intellectual, emotional and artistic experiences it offers. During one of her years at Mary [ ' aldwin, every student is eiirdiled m a dance class even if it is only at the beginning level. In Modern Dance, the girls learn to express with body movement the basic emotions of love, conflict, war and religion, and create their own choreographies. The Folk dance is tied in witli the customs of the people it represents; becoming acquainted with the dances of different peoples makes the dance more meaningful and gives an insight into their lives. Bfith forms of dance present a chapel program during the winter quarter and in the spring they provide the dances for the Commencement Pag- eant. . . . whosoever would leave his body supple, easy and healthful, shnuld learn to dance.
