MARY BALDWIN l,iu±fil Tvteaw f How Yearbooks Got Started In the early years the yearbook was a memory album for seniors only. In the beginning seniors ex- changed pictures. Some pasted them into albums together with newspaper clippings to serve as a re- minder of school days. Some such procedure still ob- tains in many small schools. Eventually printed year- books came into being. In the late 1880 ' s, the use of halftones was developed and the more progressive schools adopted this new method of photo reproduc- tion into their publications. However, editors did not start immediately to produce streamlined books simi- lar to those now being printed. It was too much to ex- pect yearbooks to change overnight. Today the chief function of the yearbook is the same as it was before printed annuals made their appearance. It should still be a memory book, a family album of the school. Students still want pictures of themselves and of their friends. From: School Yearbook Editing and Management by Calvin J. Medlin And so we have made this edition of The Bluestocking a memory book of llu year 1950-1951 at Mary Baldwin. JESSICA GILLIAM. Editor PATRICIA CASEY, Business Manager H $t r ' I .fy mm , - ' .. -. It is a reminder in later years of our friends and ourselves; at play, in activities, and yes — even at work. The first annual at Mary Baldwin was quite different from that of today, Published in 1891, The Augusta Seminary Annual made its deb ut. Al first, only literary articles were admitted, which were written in French and ( lerman, as well as in English. When the name of our alma mater was changed to Mary Baldwin Seminary, the annual was also stylized and became The Annual of the Man Baldwin Seminary. L ' p until this time, Eng- lish teachers edited the yearbook, but with the new changes, a student took over this responsibility. In 1899, the annual received a third title, The Mary Baldwin Souvenir, which was the first publication of this sort with a stiff cover, regular photographs, original art work and a dedication. After alternating between The Bluestocking and Baldwins, Mary Baldwin, in 1902, finally adopted Tin-. Bluestocking for her yearbook title. HERBERT S. TURNER, B.D., D.D. Professor of Philosophy and Bible DEDICATION For over ten years he has been as much a part of Mary Baldwin as the chapel services, which, under his able and willing direction are a part of the Chris- tian life of our college. His untiring efforts to fulfill our religious needs, his capability as head of the philosophy department, the pleasantness of his char- acter and his winning quiet charm have endeared him to all who know him. Not only is he loved at Mary Baldwin, but he is known throughout the com- munity as a minister, teacher, and friend. With sincere appreciation, we dedicate the 1951 Bluestocking to Dr. Herbert S. Turner, who has wel- comed every opportunity for service, guidance, and assistance to the students of Mary Baldv in. 1  l ggMHBBggjra HBbBHH ' IE FACULTY FRANK BELL LEWIS, Ph. D. Senior Song (Tune: Londonderry Air ) While mountains guard thee in the Shenandoah, And loyal daughters daily look to thee, The spool of happy days is fast unwinding Its colors rare for memory ' s tapestry. The tall white columns gleaming in the sunlight, The moonlight casting over all its spell, The scarlet autumn, and the winter snow llakes, • m. Mary Baldwin, can we say Farewell . May laughter ring, and dreams be ever golden. Along the terrace there above the street, May friendships live like truth ' s white flame a-glowin§ Like truth ' s white flame that never meets defeat. A great many events have taken place since we first wandered shyly into Main Building as bewildered fresh- men. We have enjoyed two Apple Days, given a couple of grand class parties, studied for numerous exams, and even assisted with some very delightful dances. Remembering our first year and our many adjustment problems, we have tried extremely hard to help this year ' s freshmen. As a class, we have had our moments of success along with the rest. The swimming contest and the hockey meet gave us chances to make some winning records of which we are proud. You will f ind us well represented in the Miscellany, and Campus Comments has been invaded regularly l v our members. And now. at the half-way point in our college career, we can look bolh back- ward and forward with pleasure, for the sophomore class has held its own nicely and is eager to continue making indelible marks on the pages of the Alary Baldwin story. Her composite gain is a knowledge of the way to live with other people. The best training sin- could possibly have for being a good citizen is partici- pation in a Student Government Association such as ours at Alary Baldwin. In this college community she realizes that each student must give up some of her personal privileges to insure broader rights for all. This idea is the basis of our American democracy. Our Student Governmenl Association is supported by the Honor System. This Honor System applies in every phase of college life. Living in this at- mosphere of trust develops in each student a feeling of responsibility. Each day that she upholds the ideals of the college, supported by the Student Government and the Honor System, she is building qualities of enduring value into her life. She gains confidence in herself thai she will never lose after lea ing Mary Baldwin. I veryone who comes to Mary Baldwin is eligible to be a member oi the stu- dent Government Association if she shows thai she is qualified. Each Mary Bald- win student should realize that being a member iii this Association is one of the greatest privileges she will ever he granted. 88 First Row. THE CLUB HOUSE M1NA HILL Chairman BETTY HARWOOD DONIA CRAIG JENNY COURTNEY JOAN DAVENPORT Since the new luid house has not yet been completed, Mary Baldwin girls can always be found catching a (|uick cigarette, a hand of bridge, or a coke in the recreation rooms in the gymnas- ium. Though we think back often of our gaj times in the old pine paneled Biology Build- ing , we eagerly await the completion of the new and modern club. We know always that some- where on campus the piano or victrola will blasl forth, the call for a fourth , or another deck ul cards, and a parly of some kind will be car- ried on with the same Mary Haldwin spirit, no matter where our club is situated. 97 [ESSICA GILLIAM Editor The Bluestocking The junior class, whose privilege and responsi- bility it is to edit the yearbook, presents the 1951 edition of the Mary Baldwin College Bluestock- ing. In the fall of 1950 the start began its work. With many new ideas and dreams for an even better annual than ever before, this small group has watched the annual grow and develop through the year. Though many of the great plans had to be discarded, it is our hope that here are pre- sented some of the choice pictures and activities of your friends; of girls whom you have known and loved, have played and worked with through the year. Throughout the years the BLUESTOCK- ING has gained recognition both as a memory book and a cherished reminder to alumnae and students. We are a member of The Virginia In- tercollegiate Press Association and The National Scholastic Press Association. The staff would like to express its appreci- ation to Miss Fannie Strauss, faculty advisor for the BLUESTOCKING since 1931, for her en- couragement and guidance through the year. Thanks id die following students who have helped behind the scenes with the 1951 BLUE- STOCKING: Margaret McLaughlin, Julia Bud- well, Ann Paulett, Patty Mann, Nancy Jones. Its original purpose was to present interesting tid- bits about campus life in an informal way but about 1930 this purpose changed and remains the same today — to give a good report of the news on campus. In December, 1928, Campus Comments join- ed the other campus publications in participat ' on in tlie Virginia Intercollegiate Tress Association. Today it is a member of the National Scholastic Press Association and the Virginia Intercollegiate Press Association and has won honors in both state and national contests. The size of tin- newspaper varied often un- t 1 the fall of 1933 when it became the size of a daily newspaper. It remained that si ,- until 1945 when it was reduced to the tabloid size it is today. Twenty to twenty -five issues are published each year by the staff, with contributions from the faculty and student body. .Mis- Mary Swan Carroll has been the faculty advisor for Campus Comments since 1931. In 1899, the Mary Baldwin Literary Society sponsored the first Mis- cellany. Since that first issue the Miscellany has made regular appearances, providing an excellent record of student life and interests. In times of national emergency and student inertia since that time, publication of a newspaper or annual has been occasionally suspended, hut the Miscellany has enjoyed a continuous, existence for 52 years, providing the literary outlet for Seminary and College authors. With the appearance of Florabelle Zirkle ' s Diary in 1919, the magazine came to be dedicated to the student herself, instead of to her academic accomplishments. Emphasis shifted to creative writing, although the guidance and promotion of literary activity at Mary Baldwin continued as an important function of the magazine. Contests have been sponsored for the students, offering prizes for the best in poetry and prose. At commence- ment, June 1951, a special award will be pre- sented for the third time for the outstanding con- tributions of the year in these fields. A member of the Virginia Intercollegiate Press Association and the National Scholastic Press Association, The Miscellany has won hon- ors in both state and national contests. Under its sponsorship, Campus Comments first appeared in 1924, and soon became an important publica- tion in its own right. For over half a century, the Miscellany has presented a quarterly portfolio oi creative writing, a literary magazine penned, de- signed, ami edited by and for the students of Mary Baldwin College. Every student at Mary Baldwin is a member of the Athletic Association. The officers and council members compose the ruling body of the Athletic Association. The council includes the leader of each sport that is participated in at Marv Baldwin. In the Fall, hockey and swimming are two of the favorite sports. Baskethall is played in the Winter, followed by volleyball. In the Spring the tennis torna- iiH-nt and Softball are the focus of attention. Throughout the year table tennis, bowling, archery, golf, pool and badminton are participated in by a majority ot the students. The Swimming Pageant, which takes place each spring, is a club project and only members of the club participate. Ill Hockey Betty Houston Leader The favorite fall sport, the one which holds the enthusiasm of the greatest number of students, is hockey. Beginners and experienced players alike come out each Fall to participate in this exciting sport. There are intramural games between the classes held at the end of the Season, when everyone comes out either to play for her class or to cheer it to victory. This year the Sophomores took the championship by winning all their games; the scores were: Sophomores vs. Freshmen (2-0), Sophomores vs. Juniors (1-0), Sophomores vs. Seniors (1-0), Juniors vs. Seniors (1-0), Juniors vs. Freshmen (0-1), Seniors vs. Freshmen (2-0). Softball is played at most of the M.B.C. picnics. 113 Recreational I emus Leader Mary lane Camer Archery Leader loan Larrick Volleyball Leader Eva Pound Of all the individual sports at Mary Baldwin, tennis is perhaps the liveliest and most competitive. The singles match is usually held in the Fall and the doubles match in the S | • r i 1 1 l; . Since volleyball has become such a popular sport on campus the Athletic Association Council has decided to add it to their group of major sports. A volleyball tournament between the classes is held in early spring and the winning team receives points toward the annual class cup. At the end of the season a varsity team, composed of the most outstanding players, is chosen. In the Spring the interest of all archers is directed toward the Inter-Collegiate Telegraphic ivIiim Tournament, which consists of a Columbia Round. Those who meet the require- ments of the tournament are given a rating and awarded a certificate 1 the National Archery Association. Archery also takes a prominent place as one of the class sports, each class has a team composed of the uirls with the three highest scores shot in a Columbia Round. One familiar example is PRINTING. Once editor, once compositor, or press- man catches the spirit of the shop, the spell is seldom broken. Like the odor of a camp fire, or a whiff of salt air, the beloved tang of printer ' s ink, symboli- cal of a great profession, gets into your heart and soul. School Annuals, Magazines, Newspapers and Special Printing, all smack of it. It is an invisible link that binds all intelligence together. It is the stimulus for creation in business or romance. This craftsmanship, this devotion to service and alert- ness to business needs, has nourished and developed an enormous industrial vitality, and whichever way the course of the future runs, the printer will always find himself able to adapt his helpfulness to new opportunity.
