C nnuai Pui catlon. a ihe Stu ietitL of e; SfauHtoft,V . Kathenne Sherri DI CATION She has won our admiration and respect by her understanding of and her interest in us. She has shown us her high qualities of leadership and her untiring efforts in the interests of both the stu- dents and the school. To MISS KATHERINE SHERRILL, dean of Mary Baldwin College, do we, the editors, dedicate The Bluestocking of 1944. ROCOGU Ill this, the Bluestocking of 1944, we have en- deavored to present to the seniors a review of some daily activities of their last year at college. Included are some highlights of the traditional events in the college year— the Senior Investiture and planting of the ivy, and the May Queen, and the pro- cession of seniors and attendants— these, we thought would be the most outstanding, as the years go by. JOSEPHINE HAXNAH President C lie Sluaeui Ljovmnmeni OfssociaUon The preamble to our C(jiistituti()n reads: We, the students of Mary Baldwin College, desiring to enter into that larger life which comes through self-control in our daily lives, through hearty cooperation in community welfare and govern- ment, through unselfish service in helping others, do hereby organize a Student Government Association which is based upon an honor system applying to every phase of our college life. Thus honor, which embodies individual responsibility also, is the underlying principle of our organization. Everv student becomes a member of the Association when she enters Mary Baldwin and shares in the rights and responsibilities of self-government. Al- though Student Government gives a great deal, it also demands a great deal from each individual. Through Student Government we hope to develop that upright- ness of character, sincerity, and Icjyalts, all of which are so necessary in our everyday living. Therefore, the purpose of Student Government will be that each moves forward, always, to inspire to high endeavor. 86 First Ro ' u ' : Anne Easterly, Anno Simms, Sue Feldman, Emaline Mc .ralli Second Ro ' . During the last fift} ' years, the Young Woman ' s Christian Association has served to guide the religious activities of the campus. Every student is en- couraged to participate in the activities of the organization and student leaders form a cabinet to guide its work. The members of the cabinet work in close cooperation with our sponsor, Miss Mary E. Lakenan. Through the Christian endeavor of the students in definite types of work headed by cabinet members, mental, social, physical, and spiritual development is promoted. This program is introduced with the traditional candle light Vesper service — a recognition service for all students. Dormitory devotionals and World Fellowship Chapel programs as well as the Sunday night vespers are continued throughout the year. The fellowship enjoyed by the girls makes possible lasting contacts with others through social service work. The Big Sister-Little Sister arrangement at the beginning of the year not only augments friendship but supplies a helper and adviser for each new student. Some of the social service activities are : weekly visits to and parties at the Bettie Bickle Home, the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind, interest in the white and colored day nurseries, interest in the Mary Baldwin room at the King ' s Daughters ' Hospital, play Santa Claus to children of Staunton at Christmas, and the Freshman project which will give recreational aid to the soldiers at the Woodrow Wilson General Hospital through gifts of books and recor ds. Other projects include financial aid to a negro student at Stillman Institute, to a British refugee child, and to an Egyptian School child. Annual con- tributions are made to the National Y.W.C.A. organization, the Golden Rule Foundation, and the World Student Service Fund. Because the latter contribution averaged over one dollar per student, the Y.W. was awarded the certificate of highest honor this year. The year ' s work is concludetl in Ma_ -, and another _ ear is started with the Vesper Installation Service of the new cabinet members. 88 I 4.P1 rirs-t Kin ' - lulie Spruiit, Laura McMana a , Nndl Harr, Charlotte Cohn Second i?un ' .- ' Allele Chambers, Carmen Hayes, Jane Harden, Josephine Hannah, Miriam I ' uckles ' Ckey.Qf.e.Of.Gakmi OFFICERS EMALINE McGRATH President JULIE SPRUNT Secretary LAURA McMANAWAY Treasurer COMMITTEE CHAIRMEN NOELL HARR Social Service CHARLOTTE COHN Devotional JULIE SPRUNT Program LAURA McMANAWAY Finance ADELE CHAMBERS i orU Fellowship CARMEN HAYES Day Student Representative JANE DARDEN Friendship and Sophomore Representative MIRIAM BUCKLES Freshman Representative JOSEPHINE HANNAH Ex-Officio MISS MARY E. The paper is representative of the entire student body being edited, planned, and written by the students themselves. The newspaper is closely atifiliated with the journalism classes of the college. Since journalism classes were introduced in 1932- ' 33, Campus Comments has achieved recognition from both State and National Press Associations. In 1940 it won a high honor rating from the Associated Collegiate Press; in 1938 and 1943 it won first class honor ratings; and in 1937, the newspaper was awarded an All American rating. At the Virginia Intercollegiate Press Association Convention, it has placed first twice and second several times. Although Campus Comments is strictly a student publication, the unobtrusive but indispensable aid of Dr. Mary Swan Carroll, faculty adviser, has resulted in many improvements. Unusual feature pictures which add to the reader appeal of the paper have bee n taken since 1939 by Dr. Lillian Thomsen, who takes publicity pictures for the college. Appearing first on December 25, 1924, as a fort-nightly, bulletin-sized paper, Campus Comments has improved steadily, becoming an interesting and vital part of the college life. 100 Fir t Ruic- Cccilc Mears, FranCL• Wilborn, Anne Easterly, Marilyn West Second Roi, ' : Tovce Craig, Lou Strauss, Mary Burr, Jane Hamilton Clarke, Rosalie Packard O ' ke Staff CECILE MEARS Managing Editor AKXE EASTERLY A ' ' ' ' - Editor MARY BURR issistant N ' civs Editor MARILYN WEST Society Editor JOYCE CRAIG Feature Editor LOU STRAUSS -Assistant Feature Editor ADELE EGGERS •S ' or J Editor ROSALIE PACKARD - ' ' ' t Editor FRANCES WILBORN Circulation Manager ELEANOR KHENE -issistant Circulation Manager TANK HAMILTON CLARKE Sports Editor (First Semester) 101 aQS. .stFcki iiig Illa uj Dalcuum NATALIE LEMOX Editor NANCY ROYCROFT Business Manager C ke yriUceLLanij The first issue of The Miscellany, which appeared forty-five years ago, closely resembled a newspaper, but only a year later it took the form of a maga- zine. That first magazine-issue was small and plain, but it was a step forward and The Miscellany has continued on its way. Always it has tried, by publishing student contributions, to encourage creative writing and to stimulate interest in creative writing. In the following years the changes came fast and furious. The first cover design was used in 1904, and later color was used in that design ; still later there was another change — the addition of adds ; the print became larger and more pages were added until The Miscellany became the magazine it is today. In 1938 The Miscelloiy received the All-American honor rating. In 1942 it was awarded the highest honor bestowed annually on magazines of its classifica- tion by the Virginia Intercollegiate Press Association. The Miscellany has undergone many changes during the past forty-five }ears. and undoubtedly it will continue to change, but the aim of The Miscellany will remain the same — to encourage literary works, increase campus interest, and to grow forever upward and onward along with the college it represents. 102 First Roic: Mary Unrr, liit N MutllLr. The Athletic Council serves as a guide for our sports program and this year the interest and cooperation has hcen par- ticularly successful. The point system was revised under the dire-rtion of our new faculty advisers, Miss Christine Foster and Miss Anna Mae Smith. Every Mary Baldwin girl has actively entered into a number of sports and due to this, as well as the point revision, there will be more awards of letters, sweaters and blazers than ever before at the Athletic banquet. The Athletic Picnic officially inaugurated sports this year at Mary Baldwin with the skits and the Faculty-Student baseball game. Hockey season quickly followed, with interest inten- sified by the visit of Miss Appleby and our Hockey Play Day, at which Stuart Hall and Madison College were our guests. The season was climaxed by the Senior Class winning the Hockey Championship for the fourth year. Soccer, initiated this fall, was exceedingly popular. Basketball monopolized the winter months. With both a Dormitorj ' and a Class tourna- ment, games were played nearly every week. The Faculty Women-Memorial game ended the Dormitory tournament and the Faculty-Senior game officially closed the season. During examinations a special sports program was carried out to encourage every girl to keep fit. Bowling held everyone ' s interest, and an old fashioned Square Dance was a help in keeping up our spirits. The extensive swimming program scheduled for March prevented the campus from suc- cumbing to spring fever. Our swimmers comi)eted in a National Telegraphic Meet as well as in the annual school meet. The Swimming Club sponsored a water pageant which revealed how profitable had been the time and effort expended in aquatics. Late spring found us playing baseball on our class teams as well as practicing for the tennis tournament. Walking, badminton, and archery also kept us out in the sunshine. It is not hard to realize why so many Mary Baldwin girls have entered into athletics with such enthusiasm. We want to feel that we are keeping fit as part of our war effort and that is the reason we can be doubly proud of the total participation of the students in our athletic program. 120 Ofildellc Council OFFICERS -,,, , „, J ' icc-Prcsidcnt JERRY LeURAND c-k v UhERINE KIVUGHAN J PEGGY NAIRN SPORT LEADERS BETTY ANNE COOKE : : ' . : ' . : B kciMl ELIZABETH MOORE , NANCY HOWE . .
