Cf yylessacje from Uur 1 resiaenl Tlie first annual of llu- new century naturally calls l i niinil the scIkmjI and the student of one hundred years ago. The student of 1S42 prohahly thought that hers was a static sort of world, otTering stal ilit ' and security, with little evidence or prcjuiise of rapid change. You of 1943 know that yours is a wtjrld of rapid, even vicjlent, change. The difference, however, is not necessarily so much the rate of change as the know- ledge of it, which is rendered possible by the century ' s development in the science of communication, which has been revolutionary in its impact upon the life of the world. The college woman of today then is oriented to a changing world, and is geared to it as a driving or a driven member, as the case may he. This is very good. You need not fear change; what you may fear is that in the midst of change vou lose sight of certain fundamental principles which have been the basis f(jr the present state of attainment. What are these abiding values? They are the Christian principle with all of iis im])lications, and the validity of sound learning and straight thinking. On these our college has buikled for one hundred years. These are her heritage, and ours, in the new century. Such is m - message this century morn to you, the students of Mary I ' aldwin. In the first student body one hundred years ago was a Mary Julia Baldwin. Each of vou, abiding in the strength of these principles, may re-capture something of her spirit of faith and service, and build a life worth}- of your heritage. L.
