Snaps of acLiLlij This student liody is, as in nil other colleges, made up of four classes. Mary Baldwin is different in the re- spect that there is no unnecessary class distinction. Students in all the classes are encouraged to know each other. This is accomplished sociall), intellectually, and athletically. The common interests that each class has with the others hold the students to- gether in a true sjiirit of loyalty to Marv Baldwin. cJ k e Lj L a s s e s Ji-:ssiF. As memories unfold we recall our first days at school — the excitement of meeting roommates — making friends — learning how to co-operate with each other. During our Sophomore year the traditions of Mary Baldwin began to take root in our hearts. Our activities were varied — our Sophomore- Senior banquet a big success. Or Junior rear found us welded together into a whole — There was the thrill of our entertainment by the Freshmen — the Bluestocking Carnival — the Junior-Senior banquet. The fall of ' ? 7 brought new dignity. Investiture Day was a success in spite (if the fact that it rained for the first time in seven years — Then the Senior party and caroling afterwards — January to June went by on wings — exams — the Senior play, the first produced entirely by a Senior class — High tea — graduation, with the traditional Class Day and May Day — Graduates now, we look back upon our tour years at Mary Baldwin with a deep sense of thankfulness for high aims and ideals instilled in us. In turn we have left, we hope, a cornerstone upon which future Senior classes mav build with security. 84 junior Lytass Offu Lcers Si: iKi.KV IIlack President Elizabeth Bann ' kr Vice-President Maxine Dunlap Sccrctarv Edith Carper Treasurer Miss Latimer Sponsor CLASS COLORS (lii-i-n and While 85 ?i % Cathkrine Andf.rson Elizabeth Hanxku r l-:Vl ' :RLY RiVENS Shiri.ky r.i.ArK Carol Bowman liKI ' TY I)0V1) iicTTY Brow X Margarkt Brow ni. My, how time llies — hut no. time stands still: w (.■ ll . As Freslnnen. we entered colleye with the feelings of eaj lets who are i)ushe(l out of the home-nest to tr their w ini;s for the In ' st time. ITowevcr. our many new experiences, namely, the Junior- l ' reshman tea, initiations, semester examina- tions, and the I ' reshnian-Junior iKUiquet, led to strength and happiness. In oin ' .Sophomore lli.yht eig ht ' -one of oui (jri.ginal ckiss particijjated. and two new-comers joined our llock. That year our class achieved new heights: first, with our Hollywood Premier skit at the Athletic Picnic: second, with our Ringo .Stand at the nLi ' KSTOtKixc Carnival ; and third, with oin- Coronation I ' lancpiet for the Seniors. At the heginning of this, our junior year, we numbered fifty-six. plus three more new-comers, and we represented fourteen dift ' erent states. For the second lime we received honors on our Athletic Picnic skit — a dramatization of the well- known ballad. The Martins and the Coys. The realization that we were actually upperclassmen came, first, when we were the hostesses at the Junior-Freshman tea. It was again brought home to us wlien we were associate-hostesses with the Seniors at Open House for our friends from neighboring universities. Our class was in charge of the r.LUi-:sTorKrx(i Carnival this year; also sponsored a take-olif-on-the-faculty as a chajiel program and we co-operated in the attempt to standardize the present Mary Baldwin ring. We were honor guests for the first time at the Junior-Freshman Valentine Banquet which was given at the Stonewall Jackson Hotel. Our last tribute to the Seniors was the Junior-Senior r anc|uet, at wduch time the l ' )38 Bn-i;sToeKi. (; was presented. Then came Class Day and Commencement, and the th iuglit that it was our last, as sjjectators. And so our third lli.ght ended. With w ings strong and almost mature, we will return in September to take the fourth and last trial flight. Then in the following June we, the class of 39, will go out to try our win,gs in the great unknown. 93 1. At the station — 2. A Sunday night — 3. Waiting fur classes — i. Upening ul Book Store — 5. The iet .Xcquainted Party proved that everyone had learned enough n.ames, faces, and places to really have a good time. Ahnut then, too, we dis- cinered our differences in pronunciation: it was the topic ol conversation for a longer time than we like to remember. The insjiiring ' . W. C. A. Candlelight Service was a contrast to the horrors of Freshman Day. There ' s not one of us who doesn ' t shuddi ' r to rememlier the n])]ier classmen at Rat Court. We were acclimated linall) when the -Senior Investiture came along to lill us with noble thoughts and resolutions. Not long after the Junior Tea we began tn count the days until Christmas. Before December 16tli ue amassed literally piles of presents to help Santa with the mountain children. Rack at school again, no one had much time to remember how jterfect vaca- tion had been because exams were upon us. There was much burning of the mid- night-oil, but all our hard work certainly made us appreciate the free week-end. February was marked by the Freshman-Junior Banquet on Valentine night. The color scheme was appropriately red and numerous corsages showed that certain fair young lads had remembered the da_ -. The Spring House Party was memorable in too many ways to enumerate. Some of our favorite memories are: the Athletic I ' icnic — Joyce and Camille cutting up — Chape! Hall doing the same, and sometimes better — that cute Culver girl — our twin triplets. Anne, Jane, and Sarah — blind dates — I ' hyllis in the play — Gen ' s good looks — our athletic aliility, especially in basketball I -Iris ' personality, and last, saved as best, the Club. It adds up to a perfect year and we all say that our ideal is to spend three more happy years at Mary Baldwin. 11 Life at Man- Baldwin ct-nters largely ai ' duiid the activities that the college offers. The piildications, ath- letics and varidus clulis. including languages, music, .science, drama, art and others, constitute the activities. These outside interests aid in teaching the students how to work together more efficiently and at the same time how to profit most from these extra- curricular activities. Unselfish co- operation and true sportsmanship are necessary in making the wide variety of college sports successful. Both of these qualities have aided in making athletics at Mary Baldwin gain the highest degree of success. In the achievement of these some of the out- standing characters in the college have been discovered. t--iai CjikieUcs - ... „ ' 1 m ii- LLiff • .j IklS. ' J , :i { ? RUTH PARISH Pi-i-suh-iit of Athletic Association Of nessacje from ike 1 resident The Atliletic Association is an association to which all the girls of the student bod}- belong . A council is elected to assist as leaders of the various sports, who with the director of Physical Education, plan and carr}- out the program for the year. This council tries to encourage the students to participate in the athletic program. Interest in this program is first stimulated in the gym classes. The Association stands fur much more than athletic ability. It tries to estab- lish in every girl the habit of wholesome, physical recreation. It tries also to instil in the daily habits of the girls sportsmanship, self control, co-operation, and sincerity. The Association, moreover, endeavors to combine athletics with social activi- ties. This is accomplished through picnics, dances, entertainments, and various other programs. With these principles the Association aims to establish in the students a wholesome sports program that will remain w ith them after their college days. 156 fe . Seated: M Standing- J. Herxdox ; P.
