Movies, slides, games, and contests were popular. However their activities were not confined to the classrooms. The basement of Ann Hennessey's home became the scene ofa French II club supper consisting of traditional French foods prepared by the members. The French I members enjoyed a similar function at the home of Ann Fillippeli. In keeping with an established custom, the French I club honored the French II club with a spring dance. The Spanish Club members were partakers of Spanish foods served in Lucy Stephen's home. The cafeteria became a social ball when the two Latin Clubs, Liberi Romani and Servi Caeasaris, held their annual Christmas entertainment of dancing and games. The activities of the club con- sisted of making studies of the qualifications of teachers, the opportunities and requirements of the teaching profession, and college requirements for those who wish to enter the teaching profession. The Future Nurses Club was formed this year at Xlavahi for the purpose of studying the opportunities in the field of nursing. lt also had as its goal to produce citizens informed of the glories, hazards and in- terests in the nursing profession. Nlrs. Gloria Smith and Nliss Laura Kreger were assisted in their job of sponsorship by the Nursing Auxiliary of Martins- ville General Hospital, who en- tertained the girls at the Nurses' Home on several occasions. The primary project of the F. N. C. was to promote chapters in some interested schools in the area. The members chose as other projects helping at the hospital and assisting our local Welfare Agency. Shank A shrill whistle from the white-clad drum major attracts the attention of everyone to the north end of Ben Ramsey Field. With the sound of brilliant trumpets, deep basses, high-pitched flutes, and the steady beat of drums, the Martinsville lligh School Band begins another half-time performance. Eight minutes later, the band marches from the field, show completed, the crowd settles back to watch the second half of the game+many times unmindful of the numerous hours of hard work spent by both director and band in preparing the show. This is only one of many such performances the band staged this year to add to and promote a fervent spirit here at Nlavahi. The band got busy right away when the school term began preparing its year's activities. Seniors Gary Cassell, Barbara Chaflin, and Genie Marie Spencer lead the band as Drum Major and Drum -J M at, si ,, Majorettes during all marching events. Half-time performances, leading the Homecoming and Christmas parades here, and participating in the Shrine Bowl in Roanoke, and the Cherry Blossom Festival in Wash- ington were included in the bandis marching curriculum for the ,56-'57 season. In early October, band officers were elected by the members of the band. Bill Craig, a senior, headed the slate as president. Dugald Kirk, a junior, and Sallie Sue Hall, a senior, were chosen as vice presi- dent and secretary, respectively. Twenty-one members from the Martinsville Band were selected to perform in the All-State Band at Roanoke in early February. Thir- teen of these gained a position in the Concert Band and eight appeared in the Workshop Band. This is the largest number that has made the All-State Band in recent years. Presentation of their annual assembly before the student body and appearing in the District Music Festival at Danville required much preparation by the 80-member organization in January and February. The band brought to an end the concert season with its repertoire for the season. Under the capable direction of Mr. Ralph Shank, the band excelled in all of its performances and truly deserves words of praise from all here at Martinsville High School. +3 ss 32+ ffm' www 04 -A-f7UQ. WD MARY GARLAND LAPRADE BITSY WEBB 96 RUTH DREWRY IRMA HERMES Fight-team-fight! echoed through the corridors of Nlavahi many afternoons from the beginning of football season to the end of basketball season as the six Varsity cheer- leaders, who had been elected by the student body, practiced to lead the supporters of the Big Team in cheering at the approaching game. During the sunny autumn lunch periods their voices were heard and their spirit and enthusiasm sensed as they held pep rallies on the front lawn. Neither the football nor the basketball Homecoming Assembly Program would have been complete without their yells inspired by their fervent spirit as they led the student body in the manifestation of the Spirit of Mavahin. At the football Homecoming half-time ceremonies, they moved from their place in stands, where they had led the students in cheering, to the field where they held the arch for the procession of the Queen, her attendants, and the escorts. With the cheering at the Basketball Tournament in Blacks- burg, their season's joy and privilege of promoting the Spirit of Mavahi came to a close. KAY Isuzx' JANICE HANGPIR To stimulate school spirit and to cheer the home team on to victory-that is the duty of a group of cheerleaders. Each member, however, must accept individual responsibilities. She must learn the yells and cheers, she must sacrifice many afternoon activities for hours of practice: she must be prompt, she must act, at all times. in a manner that will be a credit to her school and convey the spirit of her school. These things, each cheerleader did. The V. Cheerleaders held pep rallies at the lunch period on the days that the J. V. team was to meet its opponent that afternoon or night. lXIany afternoons they were found on Ben Ramsey Field decorating the goalposts to reveal the HSpirit of Klavahill at the game to be played. After having helped make maroon and gray streamers as decorations for the arch, they, with the Varsity leaders, held it for the regal procession. The question should make you think. Ask it of yourself and if you are not extravagantly modest you may come up with some interesting answers. Without straining to give yourself a pat on the back, you can find something that you really believe you can do better than most people. Maybe you are a better gardener, a cook, or carpenter. Perhaps you can drive a car better than most people, have a better memory, or do a better job of house painting. In each one of us there is something noteworthy, whether it is in character or achievement. You can understand not only yourself but other individuals better if you ask, What can I do better than most people? When you have the answer about yourself, take advantage of it. It may open new avenues on your careers or in your personal life. It may show you that you are not using your strongest asset. We are confident that you, the members of the Class of 1957, will ask yourselves, What can I do better than most people? And then proceed to do it! MARTINSVILLE NYLON PLANT E.
