This has been the happiest and busiest year in our career. September second, fifty-four Seniors gathered in their homerooms proud and rather skeptical, for we had new sponsors-fMiss Sara Cline and Miss Alle-ne Overbey. The year seemed to fly-fethe magazine campaign, Book Week, Mid- term exams, the essay contest in which lohn Huffaker and Daphne liouchins won prizes, and Senior play! No one could forget the play, LENA RIVERS. April I6 found Olivia Meade as Lena and Ishmael Cook as Durward in their complicated love affair, and Mary Beth Reed became a darling old Granny Nichols. These were ably assisted by Mary Morgan, lane Stultz, Mary T. Parrish, Inez Lester, Tom Carter, Iohn Huffaker, Blaine Wood, Fred Rush, and of course, Billy loe Franklin as Caesar and lack Lester as Aunt Millie. Then Senior Day came with its suckers, bow ribbons, and skates. What fun we did have! Now it's exam time. What a rush to get out our invitations for graduation and all the last minute work done! Sunday Night, May 30, found Dr. Reed delivering the Baccalaureate Address and commencement found Elsie Minter and May Hooker carry- ing the honors. So--May 31 brought graduation, the end of year, and the time of farewells--au revoirl C133 'luv f' , , 4-.- 7 a+ , . ,Q . 34 f , 4. if ,. fA L... vi . H ltd' rm , wma! ' '1':e.-s N A I 3 Q- .' Football was important to us all fall: winter was a time for basketball and busying ourselves with an activity or two, spring was the most delightful time of the year. We added Maggie Mae Martin, Gloria Oakley, and Sallie Ruth Self to the roll of good scholars and swelled the football roll to the tune of iourteene-fall good players, too. Taking heed from last year's Iuniors, we elected a lunior Council of sixteen students whose duty it is to settle all business affairs of the class before they are presented to the class for its approval. This council has been very successful in its work. Five chapel programs were given by our class this year, their themes having sounded the spirit of America and our pride in our country. And to show our efforts for the United States' welfare, we copped the top ranking position in the purchase of war stamps and bonds. We'll always remember Iunior Martin as the auctioneer at the big bond sale which our high school conducted last fall in our auditorium. Next year we shall be Seniors, with the hope that we will be the best Senior class yet. i217 zfmiord BETTY AARON LOUISE HENRY ACKER DOROTHY BEER IEAN BEISER LOUISE BOWMAN DOROTHEA BRADSHAW RACHEL BROCK LEWIS BURGE DOROTHY CAMPBELL RAYMOND CARDWELL EVELYN CARTER MARY CARTER BILL CHAPPELL PATSY CLARKE EUNICE CORNS RICHARD CRAIGUE ANNE CUMMINGS FRANCES DAVIS KENT DEMPSEY AUBREY DILLON HELEN DRAPER vzniom NANCY LEE DRAPER DUVAL EASLEY BEULAH PINNEY MARY MORTON FONTAINE LEE FORD ANN FOX FRANCES GILBEg 'pjf I in CLARA MAE GRAvEgV'p,vf':.,J yw A FRANK GHAVELY iffy!! We viewed the Freshmen and recalled in our ineniories the vast, empty feeling we had experienced last year upon our arrival at High School. Acting as a group, we showed everyone that the class of '45 couldn't be beat, by winning the movie party which was given to the class selling the most subscriptions in the magazine campaign, last fall. We also rank high in the percentage of students buying stamps and bonds. We owe our high scholastic standing to Carlton Fleming and Pete Stoneg but high scholastic records characterize the entire class. Our chapel programs have been lots of fun for our sponsors are most ingenious. You will find our classmates in the Glee club, football team, and lviiss Millers roll of library assistants. Yes, this year we were free from the skepticism of our first year' we loved the increased prestige which this year brought, and we havent minded the oft-repeated, You know more now than you'll ever know in your life, from teachers and parents. The upper classmen called us the new plague of rats: Miss Travis, Miss Powell and Miss Garrison probably believed it for they were our sponsors. We nearly overran the upper classrnen because of numbers. We persisted in walking up the halls on the wrong side and in making everyone walk around us while we chatted on the stairs. We made everyone sit up and take notice in the magazine campaign and one of our number, Eldred Hill, won a watch on his ability as a salesman. We contributed some new blood to the football team tmaybe that's why this was a successful season? and to the basketball teams. We have presented some highly entertaining patriotic chapel pro- grams. We have added several talented voices to the Glee Club roll, but unfortunately we have given Miss Miller some of her worst library pests. We are looking forward to next year as Sophomores for then we won't be the school's plague. VVL8 GL 6A,0'Ll0f8I O create, maintain, and extend throughout the school and community high standards of Christian character is the purpose of our Hi-Y. Each Mon- day night we gather to discuss problems of the every day world. May Hooker called our meetings to order, ably supported by the vice-presidents, Doris Lester and lnez Lester. The minutes have been kept in perfect order by Mary Beth Reed, while Elsie Minter has kept our financial records straight. We became very patriotic this year, centering our projects around war work. During the Scrap Metal Drive in our city we took the day off to collect scrap, winning our lieutenant arm bands from our collection of hairpins, snaps, and keys that we brought each morning. Every Wednesday afternoon we all joined in and helped roll bandages and knit for the Red Cross. For Christmas we sent packages to the boys in service who were graduates of Martinsville High School. Some of the packages were sent overseas and some were sent to boys in the United States. The girls have adopted a needy family. Bountiful baskets were sent at Thanksgiving, and at Christmas we played Santa Clause to the children and filled stockings with toys and candies. Along with the toys we, of course, included clothing for each member of the family. Our programs have been centered around the war effort, beginning with C347 Lf? fy!-fxfn-f mf F .-ifgx, ly CfQ,LyQ-1 ,,2L,,!c,Z1 ljcrird-JL J . , ,' f ' . f-- Y ' fb ' f f , , jkfKj4tf' ifffi 'ft 'ff 'bb' -fy 5 ftfyj .V 5 4 if , 31,2 fc f' , X552 XI - -f' . One of the most popular ministers with the younger set, Mr. Fishburne, spoke to the Club on Hi-Y and the War . in one of our discussions on Monday night Racial Problems and The Peace were led by Elsie Minter and Mary B, Reed. We had our annual Bible Study Course, and we all met and went to church as a body one Sunday in each month. Along the social lines, we joined in with the other two clubs and gave parties in which the student body participated, and what fun we did have. Leaving off our social affairs for a little while and becoming a bit more patriotic we cooperated wholeheartedly in buying bonds and stamps. Throughout the year we girls have been grateful for the leadership of Miss Maude Bell and Miss Pocahontas Wray, who have contributed so much toward making our meetings and other club associations more successful and more binding fellowship. Yes, this flag was our gift to the school, its purchase having been made possible by a movie which we spon- sored. Each Thursday after school we are found at the Bed Cross Boom rolling bandages and on off days we keep busy knitting. Of course, we were enthusiastic about the scrap drive, and most of us became officers. Our school was second in the state in amount of collection. We took advantage of our prosperity, and at Thanksgiving and Christmas we carried baskets of food and clothing to the needy. We have cooperated with the other Hi-Y's in the Bible Study course which greatly aided in our spiritual lives and in attending the church services which kept the spiritual flame glowing. We have tried this year in a quiet, subdued way to lead our school into a clearer, purer spirit of courtesy and cooperation. Our programs, based on the patriotic effort, have been led by the vice- president, Ioan Mitchell. Anna Bowe Lester presides at our meetings, and Norma Feldman keeps the records, while Betsy Gravely has charge of our financial status. Anne Duncan Walker leads our spiritual thoughts as chaplain. Miss Gillespie and Miss Miller are our advisers. C363 oy! U NDER the capable leadership of Mr. Lane, the Boys' Hi-Y has had many educational and highly entertaining meetings. Each boy has felt the influence of the club in his daily life. The boys have certainly worked with the girls to make a success of the Bible Study course, the church attendance, and the special meetings. We worked wholeheartedly in the Scrap Drive. We have cooperated in the Victory Corps, especially in the sale of stamps and bonds. We have sponsored school parties this year, providlng dancing, games and refreshments for any student who cared to join us. The highlight of the year was the initiation of our new members. Alum's good, isn't it, fellows? Not one of the boys will forget those little green ribbons and the strange commands of the older members. Mister ............ , do you remember? We discovered a lot of good sports and some wonderful talent---- Paul Stone certainly can sing, and Louis Burge must become a lawyer. We hope that the spirit of Hi-Y will grow. We believe that with such leaders as Iohn Huffaker, presidentg lshmael Cook, vice-president: Frank Gravely, secre- taryy and Bobby Minter, treasurer, Hi-Y spirit can become school spirit. Q H, say can you see by the dawn's early light -these are familiar words to any American: especially to us of the Glee Club who always sing our national anthem at least once a week. Every Wednesday and Friday you can find those of us who enjoy singing in the auditorium listening to Miss Devans say Please hurry in and get quiet. We have so much to do in such a little time. Yes, we had only forty minutes for our meetings, but we always had our special programs prepared when the day arrived, as well as being on call for chapel programs. After Thanksgiving holidays we settled down to one big objective--the Christmas program for December l8. We presented a program of Christmas carols, arranged in groups, duets, and solos. We all remember Chuck Fleenor's singing White Christmas . We took up the patriotic note and learned The Star-Spangled Banner , Anchors Aweigh , The Marines' Hymn , and The Army Air Corps . And we were constantly called upon to sing Any Bonds Today at our bond sales. The Choral Club, the most musical and interested members of the Glee Club, met on Monday to learn songs to teach to the Glee Club and to sing as special numbers on programs. This year the Choral Club broadcasted, under Miss Devan's direction, a short program of special musical selections featuring Sleepy Hollow Tune , Ye Hunters All', Katy , and Sylvia . We were rather unfortunate in our accompanist, for Mary Lee decided to leave us in favor of Danville, leaving us in the lurch. Of course, the annual Glee Club program was the highlight of our musical year. The solos, duets, and group selections were well received by an appre- ciative audience of music lovers. f38l The business affairs of the Glee Club, which included the collection of the music, the moving of the steps ,and other such handy work, was ably executed by our president, Pete Stone, and our secretary-treasurer, lnez Lester, was given the huge task of collecting dues, money for pictures, and keeping records. We are grateful to Miss Wray, our faculty adviser, whose chief duty seems to be to keep us quiet tnot that we need itJ, and we appreciate her influence and the privileges we are receiving from her guidance. We are grateful to Mr. Givens, whose protegee we seem to be, for looking in on us once in awhile with his wise advice and for his good word put in for us with the school board. We are grateful to the school board for their financial assistance, without which we would not have been able to buy new song books and sheet music. Especially are we grateful to Miss Devans for her development of our taste in music, our expression twhich, she says, is always sadl, shading, and singing in general, for her courteous manner of correcting us twhich we needed oftenlp for her undying patience with us when it seemed that we could never memorize, and, above all, for the entertainment which she provided for us with her selection of happy, beautiful, and rollicking music. This year we held a Book Week Fair carrying out the patriotic theme. That week we entertained the Grammar School at a tea with story-telling and the High School with a play, Books in the Making of America . Dull, routine work was interrupted when we decided to make scrap books of jokes, cartoons, and crossword puzzles for convalescent soldiers. Then Miss lones from the Red Cross asked the Club to make two hundred and titty pockets and cards for books at the Camp Pickett Library, so we each took twelve and soon tinished that up. Then we fixed a scrapbook, entitled Schools at War , to enter in the state contest and it fell to the Club to lead the drive for reading material for the service men. The annual St. Patricks party given for the entire school was one of the highlights oi the school social program. To conclude our year we presented the school with picture frames for some lovely Shakespearean scrolls. Ot course we assistants had to study tor the students seem to expect us to know all the answers, and we are truly grateful to Miss Miller for the cheerful way in which she has tried to enlighten our darkness. C403 Q CM AVE you ever seen a group of young people going into the school build- ing at eight o'clock at night? Going to night school? No, just to a D. O. Meeting. Well, perhaps you will ask, What happens at one of those meetings? A typical D. O. meeting is composed of two phases-business and social. The different jobs and what happens on them are discussed by everyone. Singing and quiz programs are also included in the meetings. Presiding at this meeting is Robert Hensley. The other officers are Marvin Hill, vice-president: Gayle Major, secretary: and Anne Hill, treasurer. The Diversified Occupation Course was first offered to Iunior and Senior students in 1939 to give students practical experience in the various fields of business. The business and editorial staffs were chosen by their heads with the aide of our sponsors, Miss Cline and Miss Overbey. Margaret Walton was chosen associate editor. To Tom Carter and lane Stultz fell the task of supervising the photography, and to Ruth Strait, Elsie Minter and Iohn Huffaker the problem of Writing the story of the year. Mary Beth Reed and Iohn R. Smith recorded the sports. The business staff included Ishmael Cook, Mary Lee Fitzgerald, Anne Hill, Daphne Houchins, Doris Lester, Inez Lester, Mildred Meinhofer, Mary Morgan, Lynwood Weaver and Blaine Wood. We've had a time this year. First, we were run out of our room by the nursery, so we moved up into Mr. Given's office. Then we found that getting the annual together and paying the bills isn't easy. But it's been fun-all the little arguments over the minor details-all the fuss over this and that. And it will be even more fun when they're out and everyone else can enjoy auto- graphing and gossiping over them too. i423 i , 'ew ,t -, f ., I y 1 Q .E -I 5 y , Carolyn Turner, Frances Shackeltord, Mary Taliaterro Parris, Lorene Haynes, Mary Lee Fitzgerald, May Hooker cheer the Bulldogs on to Victory.
