The theme of this volume of MAVAHI is music. It was chosen because 1939 marks the reorganization of the band and the beginning of public instruction in music. . . . If 'this volume ot the MAVAHI can bring back pleasant memories of the past, it will have served its purpose. . . . If those who have passed through these halls before and have stepped out into the world should leaf this annual, may they think of their happy days in Martinsville High School. . . . To those who are to come we present this volume of MAVAHI as our book of memories. May yours be as happy and in the end as inspirational as ours have been. .742 gfbfof W QWQZ im 4JZ me C51 t , ' 'mt W, if if SUPERINTENDENT AND PRINCIPAL l s Warfina ui e 5300 A MESSAGE TO THE CLASS OF 1939 Everything worth striving tor as individuals, or as groups, depends on the belief that we can influence events-gain our ends by thinking about thern, planning for them, and putting the plans to work. First Row Across Givens Henderson Whiiile Kolodny Iarvis Second Row Third ROW Townes Team Slaydon Kearioti 1363 Bowman Cheshire First String Cross BASKETBALL, 1939 Boys The 1939 Martinsville basketball team, like the football team, had the mis- fortune to be made up almost entirely of new men. Because R. A. Henderson was the only letterman to return this year, the team was composed of inexper- ienced players, who had never played together before. This fact accounts for the two defeats with which the team met during the first of the season. However, after a few games, the new Bulldog team began to show improvement and proved to be one of the best Martinsville has ever turned out. The new team elected R. A. Henderson, Ir., captain and Henry Whittle manager. During the middle of the season Billy Slaydon became a member of the squad to form a perfect passing and shooting combination with Captain R. A. Henderson. These two players were outstanding during the entire season, show- ing excellent defensive and offensive team work. This helps to account for the fact that the new cage team lost only three games during the season. Excellent work was also shown by Ben Kearfott, Curtis Givens, Harold Kolodny, and Fred Cross. After having a very successful season, the Bulldogs were in for a streak of bad luck at the Bluefield District Tournament. With Billy Slaydon leading the scoring attack, the Martinsville team held the Bluefield squad to a 24-all score at the end of the final quarter. As the game went into an extra period to break the tied score, however, luck was against the Mavahi five. In the first minutes of play a Graham High forward broke through the Martinsville defense to score the winning points and close the season for the Martinsville team. Although there will be four letter-men to start in the next year's basketball, which promises to be a very good one, the loss of Captain R. A. Henderson, Ben Kearfott and Harold Kolodny will be greatly felt. M.H.S. --- .... 15 Rocky Mount M.H.S. --- .... 31 Stuart ------ M.H.S. --- .... 17 Stuart ------ M.H.S. --- .... 24 Wm. Girls' Basketball The girls' basketball team was coached by George C. Wiebel this year. This is the first time he has coached tor several seasons. Among, approximately twenty who reported to practice regularly, there were only two girls, Frances Dudley and Sherlie Thomas, who had won letters last year. Sherlie Thomas was high scorer for the season. Due to inexperience the girls can not boast of many victories but they can well boast of their tine ettorts. There is a good outlook for a team next year, however, as only one varsity player, Frances Dudley, will be lost by graduation.
