The Seniors are presenting a rehearsal of the program for two boys who quit school in the grammar grades. EIEI TOM: When did the Seniors of '38 start? HISTORIANZ In September of 1935. JIM! Tell us what you did in your Freshman year. HISTORIANI Well, we rats came trembling across the street to Martinsville High School and were assigned to the homerooms of Mrs. Irving Ramsey, Miss Evelyn McKenzie, and Mr. George Wiebel. We scrambled madly through the halls, got in the hair of the teachers and upper classmen: we were run over by upper classmen and looked down upon by everyone. But we made people sit up and take notice when our boys helped to win the silver cup, a much coveted trophy, in the inter-class basketball games. ToM: I'll bet the upper classmen had respect for y'all after you won that cup. What happened during your Sophomore year? HISTORIANZ In our Sophomore year we were more active in the school activities as we felt more capable. This year we were sorry to lose Mr. Carpet, Miss Keeble, and Mr. Lacy, who had been principal during our first yearg but we were glad to wel- come four new teachers, Miss Fakin, Miss Miller, Mr. Meyers, and Mr. Staples. Mr. Wiebel became our principal, and Mr. Staples took over his homeroom. Miss Mason took over Miss McKenzie's group of Sophomores. We took part in the Hi--Y Stunt Show and gave a picnic, which we all enjoyed. Some of our classmates were taken into the Glee Club and the Hi-Y Club this year and others participated in sports. Im: Gosh! I can't wait to hear more. Tell us about your-er-ac-ac-tiv-ities during your Junior year. Hisroluanz The three rooms of Juniors were organized as one, with Lee Roy Rogers as President, Jim Davis, Vice-Presidentq Ann Draper, Secretary, Kennon Minter, ' Treasurer. We chose as our Hower, red roseg colors, red and whiteg motto, Today we followg tomorrow we lead. Our biggest problem was the entertainment for the Seniors. To raise money for this event we sponsored a faculty basketball game and the picture, Pigskin Parade. Wishing to be different, we gave the Seniors a prom, which had as its theme a pent- house. The prom was a great success and was enjoyed by all. p This year we were sorry to lose Miss Eakin and welcomed Miss Boyd. TOM: I'll bet yiall had a good time at the prom. What all did you do this year? Hlsroxzlmtz This year, our last in old Mavahi, proved to be our busiest. We were sorry to lose Miss Walker, Mr. Harris and Miss Crinkleyg but we welcomed Misses Shackelton, Wells, Rowe, Kelly and Mr. Pittman. We also lost during our four years in high school many classmates and also welcomed many. At present there are about sixty-five of us survivors. Our next project was the Senior play, Dying to Live. After this we eagerly looked forward to the excitement of commencement week and the Junior-Senior Banquet. JIM: Gosh: I kinda wish I had kept going to school if you have that much fun. TOM: That goes for me, too. -- Thirlyyour The JMAVAHI is 193 gig Our Farewell A By MARGARET QMARGIED WINN But I don't know a thing to say i ' Except that l'm so full ofjoy, N ' So happy, delighted, and gay. . m m XE S B i cg They want me to give a poem , X Tonight we all are happy S 3' 5 It just isn't a time to be blueg - y 1 The fact that we're Seniors and are leaving ls not a sign that we'll forget you. 'n The WAVAHI 1: 1938 Football, 1937 ElEI ARTINSVILLE HlGH SCHOOL can easily call their '37 team one of the hardest fighting teams that Martinsville has ever produced. Although this team cannot boast the record of last year's team, the boys were lighting the entire game. V The splendid cooperation of the team with the coach and managers was perhaps the greatest feature in the team's success. This year's team is probably the greatest block- ing team that M. H. S. has ever produced. With the return of eight letter men headed by Captain Charles Weaver, Coach Wiebel built up a strong team. Quarterback james Davis, one of the best field generals M. H. S. has ever boasted, was assigned the hard task of running the team through the feats. The other letrermen were Jim Davis, Ralph Pickup, Southall Hamilton, Walker Millner, Bruce Gilbert, and John Pickup. The M. H. S. Bulldogs started their season by defeating Narrows High School by a score of 20 to 0. As the season continued, M. H. S. lost to Wytheville and Radford, and then proceeded to conquer South Boston, F20-13, Galax, 25-0, and William Fleming High, of Roanoke, 40-6. The M. H. S. boys hit their stride in the last two games when they defeated Galax and William Fleming High. The Galax game was featured by the broken field running of Gilbert and the good blocking from the entire team. Gilbert, on one occasion in this game, ran 98 yards for a touchdown, getting the ball on his own two-yard lineg while his teammates executed perfect blocking, he galloped the necessary yardage for the touchdown. The most exciting game was the game at Radford, where the M. H. S. boys played superior football, but were unable to push across to the winning touchdown. The Bull- dogs made 2 first downs to Radford's 4 and had the ball on the 1-foot line in the first down, and at the end of the game there was a 1-foot distance from the goal to a victorious touchdown. This was truly the most heart-breaking game of the season, as the M. H. S. Bulldogs went down in defeat by the score of 7-6. M. H. S. suffers the loss of such players as Southall Hamilton, Ralph Pickup, John Pickup, Jim Davis, Walker Millner, and Captain Charles Weaver. Besides the players mentioned above, the following received letters for their excellent playing: Lynwood Hundley, Harold Kolodny, Jimmie Katsifos, R. L. Alcorn, and Edward Cheshire. ' JWAVAHI 1- 1938 Basketball, 1938 Boys' HE cage squad was called for first practice on December 13th by Coach George C. Wiebel. With high spirit and great ambition, which were shown through- out the whole cage season, the six lettermen and recruits, numbering about twelve, elected jim Davis to captain them through the season and Guy Hollifield to manage them. Early in the course of rounding out a team, Pretty Boy Davis was lost to D. M. I. and R. A. Henderson stepped in to fill his position. M. H. S. lost only one conference game during the entire season. The floor work and pass work of the team were outstanding, while Jim Davis and Ralph Pickup led in scoring and john Pickup and Bubber Hamilton were outstanding in guarding. M. H. S. was defeated by their host in the tournament which was held at Vinton. John Pickup was placed on the all-conference team and Jim Davis on second team. Such players as Jim Davis, Ralph Pickup, Southall 'Hamilton, and John Pickup will be missed next year. In addition to those above, the following also were given letters or stars: R. A. Henderson, Bruce Gilbert, Ed Cheshire, and Guy Hollilield. THE SEASON'S RECORD M. H. S ..... ......,... 2 6 Madison ,..,., ,. ... 19 M. H. S ..... ... 17 Rocky Mount ..... ... 14 M. H. Among the excited twenty-five that day were four girls who had won letters the year before: Eemphis Andrews, Frances Dudley, Ruth Thompson, and Sherlie Thomas. The team elected Eemphis An- drews as captain to help guide them through their strenuous season, and Pat Brown as manager, assisted by Emily Hensley. By hours of practice and with the unriring energy and patience of Miss Wells the girls were inspired to work harder after each game they played. The girls had one handi- cap, which caused them to fall down on their scoring, their lack of height. Nevertheless, we want to congratulate them on their cooperation and sportsmanship. However, in losing Eemphis Andrews, Ruth Thomasson, Ann Draper, and Martha Andes, Miss Wells will face no easy problem in replacing these players. THE SEASON'S RECORD M. H.
