H. S. We went inside and were assigned to the home rooms of Mrs. Randolph Smith and Mis-s Susan French, where we have stayed during our high school days. We gradually became accustomed to the jeers of the upper classmen, but they began to take notice of us when the Freshmen boys won the cup in the inter-class basketball games. 1934-35 In 1934 we decided to organize the class Each room had its separate officers. S. E. Fishel was chosen president of Mrs. Smith's division and Pete Stultz president of Miss French'sl division. In the middle of May we went on 18 picnic and nearly drove the teachers frantic with our antics. 1935-36 In our junior year the two divisions merged into one class and Sam Hedgecock was elected president. Our colors were green and whiteg our motto was- Non scholae sed vitae. On February 26, 1936, we sponsored the Junior-Faculty basketball game. At the Roxy Theater we sponsored a picture, The Unguarded Hour, featuring Loretta Young and Franchot Tone. We were hos-ts to the Seniors at the Junior-Senior banquet and dance at the Henry Hotel on May 29, 1936. We elected our officers for the coming year and Sam Hedgecock was again chosen to lead us during our Senior year. 1936-37 In our Senior year our 'thoughts were turned immediately on the year book. In order to obtain the funds to finance it, we sponsored the pic-ture, Call It a Day, a-t the Roxy Theater. As the end of the year approached we became deeply interested in the Senior play, which was presented May 21, and we also looked forward to commencement exercises. On June 6, the Reverend C. C. Fishburne preached the .Baccalaureate Sermon. We had Class Night on June 9, and on June 10, we received our diplomas. Thus -ended the gay and colorful high school careers of the Rats of '33. -VERNON LYNSKEY. Twenty-Nine f f 1' ' 5 f I ,I .1 5 V 1 4 1 X 0 T I-I E R CLASSES 74,4 The MAVAI-ll . Center Guard Guard Guard Fifty The MAVAHI - I937 Football, IQ36 cf-XL:-,ef-gf-,j ARTINSVILLH High School can point with pride to their '36 football team. For the first time, the football .team went fl., lg-4-32 through the season without a defea-t and' the goal line was not R crossed during the entire scheduled ,seas-on. These records- are Tfilf' if unequalled or unsurpassed in the annals of M. H. S. football ibn-3NKan history. The splendid cooperation of the team with the coach and managers, and the fine team work displayed by -the team throughout the' season led to the team's success. There were no individual stars, instead, there were eleven men on the field working together for the good of the iteam and school. The team was not only a winning team, but it carried on the tradition of good sportsmanship that has always been a highlight in M. H. S. athletics. With the return of eight letter men heaidedl by Captain Bo Weaver, Coach Wiebel laid' the nucleus for his team. Quarterback Pretty Boy Davis was assigned the hard task of leading the tea-m and much of the tea.m's success is due to his ability as field general. The rest ofthe team was made up of three men who first donned M. H. S. football uniforms this year, Fishel, R. Pickup, and Nealse. The Bulldogs started the ball rolling with an 18-0 victory over the strong V. P. S. team of Danville. As the season continued Vinton, Wythe- ville, Galax, and South Boston fell before the onslaught of the M. H. S. gridders. While all the games were packed with excitement, the Vinton game was undoubtedly the most thrilling. After battling to a scoreless tie almost the whole game, Sam Hedgecock intercepted a pass in the last 60 seconds of the game and ran 90 yards for the only touchdown of the game. The most heart-breaking game was the post-season .game with Rad- ford for the championship of Distric-t No. 7. Hold-ing a 6-0 lea-d for three quarters of the game, Radford pushed over a touchdown in the last few minutes of play to tie the score. The Bulldogs lost the chance to play for the state championship by the flip of a coin, although the M. H. S. eleven remained Co-Champions of District No. 7. The loss of Hedgecock, Fishel, Price, Nease, and Bayne will be sorely felt next fall. In addition to the above named -the following received stars or letters: Weaver, Hamilton, R. Pickup, J. Davis, J. Pickup, P. B. Davis, Gilbert, Morris, Millner, Peters, and Managers Gravely and Hooker. SEASON'S RECORD M. H. S. ............ 18 V. P. S. .... ...... . 0 M. H. Fifty-One The MAVAHI - I937 Basketball, I937 JT -KK:-w ITH a successful football season behind them, the Basketball Team started' off determined to achieve even a greater suc- 'jg V. X, cess. The squad, bolstered by the return of six lettermen, led .5 HN? .mf by Captain Fishel, who was All-State Forward last year, was composed of J. Pickup, Hedgecock, Hamilton, Davis, Gravely, '-f','V i1i R. Pickup, Nease, Stone, and Gilbert. Although severely handicapped by a two weeks quarantine in the mid- dle of the season, the M. H. S. Ball Tossers lost only one of its regular scheduled games. Out of consideration for the visiting team, many of our games were cancelled immediately after quarantine, for fear that mem- bers of the visiting :team would catch spinal meningitis. This prevented the practice which is essential in acquiring smooth teamwork. The same jinx that seemed! to dog the he-els of the football team s-tuck its head up again in the district 'tournament at Radford. The Bulldogs first defeated William Fleming High School of Roanoke by the score of 33-17. In the second round of the tournament, the Maroon quintet defeated Vinton 32-21. Old man jinx had really started working by the -third con- test. The Captain of the team, S. E. Fishel, was down with influenza and was unable to play. Our other star forward, Jim Davis, fouled out in the first half. Despite this run of hard luck, the team put up a terrific fight and lost by the heart-breaking score of 15-16. Three of the Bulldogs were placed on the All-District team, Captain Fishel, forwardg S.am Hedge- cock, centerg 'and J. Pickup, guardg while Jim Davis, forward and Bubber Hamilton, guard, were placed on the second team. The .team of '38 will experience difficulty in filling the places left vacant by the graduation of Fishel, Hedgecock, 'Gravely and Nease. IQ37 Girls' Basketball 1 ROM the start of the season enthusiasm for a girls' basketball U team was high. Under the capable leadership of Miss Crink- rd 4 ley, a new addition to the faculty, and led by Captain Puff Gravely, the best team the school has had in several years was produced. With the return of four girls from last yearfs team, anil reinforced by two new players, a winning combination was selected. The girls' team experienced the same setback that the boys' team hadg they were unable to play or practice during the quarantine. This two weeks' idleness was a serious handicap and the team would have finished with even a higher percentage than they did. The M. H. S. sextet won ia total of seven games and dropped only three tilts to finish with a very good percentage. One of the reasons for the success of the team was that the girls worked to win, but a great deal of credit is also due Miss Crinkley, whose untiring energy and patience inspired the girls to work. The loss of such stars as Captain Gravely, Lucy Ratcliff, Billye Henderson, and Mary Lavinder Pan- nill will be sorely felt next year. In addition to the above mentioned, the following won letters: Sherlie Thomas, Ruth Thomasson, Frances Dudley and Helen Finney. SEASON'S RECORD .V ' I U1 517' '- 5' r- 4 ,445,Q M. H.
