C .v 1' u Uh' mmmll' W Gllaaa lgrnphrrg On a spring evening in the year 1946 I sat in the library of my plan- tation home in Brazil, thumbing a dog-eared copy of the 1936 Mavahi which had been uncovered during the annual spring cleaning spree. The sight of my old classmates made me long to see them again, and I began preparations for my return to the States. The next morning found me flying high over the blue Atlantic and the following afternoon landing' at Roosevelt Field in N. Y. During an interview with a reporter I learned that the Editor-in-chief of the New York Times is Joe Kessler. I hailed' a cab and hurried to his office on Times Square. When I had greeted him and told him of my desire he invited me to dine with him at his club that evening. As I glanced around the luxurious dining room of the Harvard Club I came upon a face strangely familiar. When I inquired, Joe was astounded to find I did not recognize Barksdale Redd, the great Broadway columnist, successor to Walter Winchell. As soon as possible I made my way to his table and we talked for an hour on the latest New York scandal. Joe finally persuaded me to accompany him to the opening night of the Metro- politan Opera where we heard the melodious voice of Mickey McMel1ion and recalled her debut with June Turner in The Gyfpsy Rover. At eleven o'clock we were ushered into the palatial home of H. B. Byrd, Jr., another of our classmates who had become internationally known as an authority on jewels, a soldier of fortune, and a 'gentleman of leisure. H. B. was delighted to see us and' after a short chat, insisted on showing us his latest scientific instrument, the Photobrain. He explained that the operator of the machine adjusts a metal cap on his head and concentrates on whatever scene he wishes to see and immediately the 'picture appears on a small screen. H. B. asked us to stay with him for the night and said that in the morning he would show us the class of '36 at their various posts in life. At nine the next morning we were at the Photobrain with a copy of The Mavahi for 1936 and this is what we saw: Susie Smith typing an order for two hundred thousand bricks from Porky 'Lester's Strawless Kiln -Elizabeth Clarke, The Sweetheart of the Hills broadcasting her Mountain Melodies from Nashville-4Sam Hammond, New York's merci- less financier, causing consternation among the iBulls and 'Bears on Wall Street-Stanley Aaron rushing from poll to poll seeking election to the Senate-Eva Byrd in an ambulance attending little June Rakestraw as she was being rushed to Doctor E. V. Hardee, the world-famed infantile Twenty

Gr mm H his Ollaaa lliiatnrg N September of 1932, the Pied Piper blew his flute and from the grammar schools sixty Rats came tumbling. All kinds of Rats scuttled across the street to seek new quarters in the high school building. We, those Rats, were tolled into the rooms of Miss Pocahontas Wray and Miss Sabra Walker, and there we have stayed throughout our entire four years. We have scrambled madly through the halls, have been ordered around by the principal, have been run over by the upper classmen and caught in many traps set by the faculty-but in spite of all these dangers, there are now forty-five survivors. The Tacky Party held' in the old Home Economics rooms was the out- standing social event of our Freshman year. Anne Minter made herself the tackiest of the tacky and was awarded a prize. In the inter-class basketball games our girls' team succeeded in winning the silver cup, a much coveted trophy. This honor made us begin to feel that we really belongedi. By our Sophomore year we felt more capable to take part in school activities. We gave a Christmas play, Red and the Christmas Whoppersj' and took part in Goops, A Melodrama, and Ulmpersonations of Movie Stars, in the Stunt Show sponsored by the Hi-Y. In the spring we enter- tained the teachers at a picnic. During this year our class was strengthened by thirteen recruits from Mr. Caldwell's home room, and two mem-bers, Joseph Kessler and Alvis Brown, from other schools. Twenty-Two
