C .v 1' u Uh' mmmll' W Gllaaa lgrnphrrg On a spring evening in the year 1946 I sat in the library of my plan- tation home in Brazil, thumbing a dog-eared copy of the 1936 Mavahi which had been uncovered during the annual spring cleaning spree. The sight of my old classmates made me long to see them again, and I began preparations for my return to the States. The next morning found me flying high over the blue Atlantic and the following afternoon landing' at Roosevelt Field in N. Y. During an interview with a reporter I learned that the Editor-in-chief of the New York Times is Joe Kessler. I hailed' a cab and hurried to his office on Times Square. When I had greeted him and told him of my desire he invited me to dine with him at his club that evening. As I glanced around the luxurious dining room of the Harvard Club I came upon a face strangely familiar. When I inquired, Joe was astounded to find I did not recognize Barksdale Redd, the great Broadway columnist, successor to Walter Winchell. As soon as possible I made my way to his table and we talked for an hour on the latest New York scandal. Joe finally persuaded me to accompany him to the opening night of the Metro- politan Opera where we heard the melodious voice of Mickey McMel1ion and recalled her debut with June Turner in The Gyfpsy Rover. At eleven o'clock we were ushered into the palatial home of H. B. Byrd, Jr., another of our classmates who had become internationally known as an authority on jewels, a soldier of fortune, and a 'gentleman of leisure. H. B. was delighted to see us and' after a short chat, insisted on showing us his latest scientific instrument, the Photobrain. He explained that the operator of the machine adjusts a metal cap on his head and concentrates on whatever scene he wishes to see and immediately the 'picture appears on a small screen. H. B. asked us to stay with him for the night and said that in the morning he would show us the class of '36 at their various posts in life. At nine the next morning we were at the Photobrain with a copy of The Mavahi for 1936 and this is what we saw: Susie Smith typing an order for two hundred thousand bricks from Porky 'Lester's Strawless Kiln -Elizabeth Clarke, The Sweetheart of the Hills broadcasting her Mountain Melodies from Nashville-4Sam Hammond, New York's merci- less financier, causing consternation among the iBulls and 'Bears on Wall Street-Stanley Aaron rushing from poll to poll seeking election to the Senate-Eva Byrd in an ambulance attending little June Rakestraw as she was being rushed to Doctor E. All kinds of Rats scuttled across the street to seek new quarters in the high school building. We, those Rats, were tolled into the rooms of Miss Pocahontas Wray and Miss Sabra Walker, and there we have stayed throughout our entire four years. We have scrambled madly through the halls, have been ordered around by the principal, have been run over by the upper classmen and caught in many traps set by the faculty-but in spite of all these dangers, there are now forty-five survivors. The Tacky Party held' in the old Home Economics rooms was the out- standing social event of our Freshman year. Anne Minter made herself the tackiest of the tacky and was awarded a prize. In the inter-class basketball games our girls' team succeeded in winning the silver cup, a much coveted trophy. This honor made us begin to feel that we really belongedi. By our Sophomore year we felt more capable to take part in school activities. We gave a Christmas play, Red and the Christmas Whoppersj' and took part in Goops, A Melodrama, and Ulmpersonations of Movie Stars, in the Stunt Show sponsored by the Hi-Y. In the spring we enter- tained the teachers at a picnic. During this year our class was strengthened by thirteen recruits from Mr. Caldwell's home room, and two mem-bers, Joseph Kessler and Alvis Brown, from other schools. Twenty-Two Uhr mauahi gp ,Q Gllaaa Eiatnrg CQ'Lnutinurh The two rooms were organized as one with Joseph Kessler, Presidentg H. B. Byrd, Vice-'Presidentg Helen Price, Secretary, and Carolyn Pannill, Treasurer. As our Junior year rolled around we found that our greatest problem was the Junior-Senior Banquet and early in the fall we realized that it was necessary to raise money for it. We sponsored a Beauty Pageant, a Faculty Basketball Game, and a Liquid-air Demonstration. We chose as the theme for our banquet, An old Fashioned Garden and even the Seniors admitted that it was beautifully carried out. After the banquet we had a dance for the Seniors. This year we lost Fred Robbins, Mary Walker Ford, and Louise Hayes who deserted us for bonds of matrimonyg Dillard Ford also left us. Ann Carroll and Kathryn Jones came to us from other schools but Kathryn remained with us only a year. The girls were again fortunate in winning the basketball cup. As Seniors we were sorry to lose Mr. Carper, Miss Keeble, and Mr. Lacy, who was our principal during our first three years, but we were glad to welcome four new teachers, Miss Eakin, Miss Miller, Mr. Meyers, and Mr. Staples whom we learned to love in our Civics classes. Our class was again strengthened by new members, Willis Barrow, June Turner, and Elizabeth Nease. Our next plans were for our year book and so we sponsored the picture, The Dark Angel at the Rives Theater to help finance it. As :he end of the year drew nearer, we looked forward to the produc- tion of our play, Oh, Profefssorln, and the excitement of commencement week. Thus ends this chapter in the lives of those Rats of '32. -SUSIE SMITH. In the fall of '35, the O'Henry and the Patrick Literary Societies were organized with the high school student 'body as members. At last, this worthy phase of school work was realized. The purpose of the clubs was to afford the students an opportunity to participate in literary and dra- matic activities. The societies met semi-monthly and well-planned pro- grams were presented. Both Boys' and Girls' Hi-Y Clubs maintained their former strength and activity this year and proved very helpful in the school. The State Girls' Hi-Y Conference was held at Radford and Helen Price, State President, was presented' a jeweled Hi-Y pin for her outstand- ing interest and efficiency. The Martinsville Club brought back the At- tendance Banner for the second time in succession. The District 7 Boys' 'Hi-Y Conference was held at Lynchburg this year and the Martinsville boys brought back the Attendance Banner for the second time in succession also. King Gravely was elected Vice-Presi- dent for next year's conference. The Boys' and Girls' Glee 'Clubs continued their fine work of last year. In the fall the clubs broadcasted from Station WWBTM in Danville and at Christmas they assisted in the music for the .Hi-Y Pageant. On March 20th they presented an operetta, The Gypsy Rover, which was most successful. The Will Rogers International Relations Club was organized in the spring of '36, the members being those upperclassmen most interested in current affairs. Mr. Lohring C. Staples and Miss Gladys Miller, the faculty sponsors, led in many interesting and profitable discussions. The M. H. S. News was established in the fall of '35 by the members of the Senior English Classes, advised by Mr. Harris. The page, contain- ing all iphases of journalism, appeared weekly in The Daily Bulletin and was heralded as one of the school's most interesting and instructive activi- ties. The Monogram Club sponsored Home-Coming Day on November 22, a day never to be forgotten. fWith these varied and worthwhile activities in which students might participate, Martinsville High School has offered a broadening and bene- ficial influence on the lives of its students. -CAROLYN PANNILL. The morale of the entire squad this season was splendid. All the boys practiced faithfully each day to make the team a success. The loss of Co-'Captain Fred Rob- bins was somewhat made up by the return of seven lettermen led by Cap- tain McIver Crouch. With those seven lettermen, 'Coach Wiebel laid the foundation for his varsity eleven. The hard task of leading the team was assigned to Quarterback Billy -Hensley who proved to be very efficient as a field general throughout the season. In the early part of the season the Martinsville eleven defeated three teams in succession, V. P. S., Vinton, and Halifax and tied the score with South Boston. The winning tide then turned and even an improved grade of 'playing failed to bring victory in the last four games. Many on the squad put on football togs for the last time as the M. H. S. Bulldogs ended their season in a hard-fought game with Radford. This was our home-coming game and a Home-coming Day parade was held be- fore the game. The Martinsville team was defeated by the close score o 7-6. With the ball-carrying of June Turner, Billy Hensley and .Bruce Gil- bert, and the fine blocking on the part of all, the Martinsville players out- pointed their opponents 70 to 46 points. Captain Crouch, at tackle, proved to be the outstanding defensive player in the line. However, able assis- tance was given by Elman Hardee, Jack Price, Bill Burge, H. B. Byrd, Bo Weaver, Joseph Kessler, James Davis and- by the other members of the team. The loss of such stars as Crouch, Turner, Hardee, Kessler, Burge, Hen- sley, Byrd and Cheshire will be sorely felt next fall. In addition to the above named, the following won letters: Davis, Gilbert, Hamilton and Managers King Gravely and Tom Ford. THE SEASON'S RECORD M. H. S. .... ................. 1 2 V. P. The boys' team, undefeated by a class NB school during the regular playing season, was considered the best ever produced 'by M. H. VS. Martinsville High School had one of the tallest teams in this section, with an average height of six feet-two. This team won first place in the district 7 basketball tournament, which was the first time that M. H. S. has received this honor. Three men of M. H. S. were placed on the All-District team: 'Captain Bill Burge, centerg .S. E. Fishel, forwardg and John Pickup, guard. On the second team M. H. S. placed June Turner and James Davis. In the state basketball tournament at Charlottesville, M. H. S. ad- vanced to the semi-finals where they were defeated by 'South Bos-ton. M. H. S. had defeated 'South Boston twice during the regular playing season but due to overwork, Martinsville lost to the fresh team. IS. E. Fishel, Jr., was selected forward on the All4State team and 'Captain Bill Burge, center on the second All-'State team. The boys who will be missed next year are 'Bill Burge, Joseph Kessler, June Turner and Bill Cheshire. The team's managers were H. B. Byrd and- lBill Hensley. Twenty girls, including four monogram win- ners, answered the call for practice. Ann Carroll was elected captain and Elizabeth Carter manager. The 'girls had plenty of scrap, were good sports and cooperated splendidly, 'but were greatly handicapped 'by lack of height. By hours of practice, Mr. Wiebel, head coach and his assistant, Miss Sue Yeaman, whipped a varsity team into shape. The team lost the first eight games but the tables then turned. The girls having gained ex- perience, and fired with new zeal, were victorious over three teams that had defeated them earlier in the season. The following players will be missing next season from the regular lineup: Captain Ann -Carroll, Mary Ruth Turner, Beezy Carter, Carolyn Pannill and Jean Clarke. THE SlEASON'S SCHEDULE M. H.
