upcrinlendmf john Fickms Mr. John F. Pickens has been superintendent of the Martins Ferry City School District since August 1966. He is a native Ohioan. He was born near Newport, Ohio in Washington County. He received his early educa- tion in the elementary schools of Wheeling, W. Va. and graduated from Bellaire High School. He attended Mount Union College, Alliance, Ohiog Ohio University at Athens, Ohio, and received his Bachelor of Science in Education from Marietta College, Marietta, Ohio. Mr. Pickens did his graduate work at Westminster College, New Wilmington, Pa. where he received his masters degree in education in 1951. During his 21 years in school work, Mr. Pickens has served as teacher, coach, principal and superintendent. He has devoted 18 years to the profession in Columbiana County, Knox Township, Ohio. During this period, Mr. Pickens also served as clerk of the board of education for 3 years. Mr. Pickens maintains a year-round home at Lake Piedmont and also an apartment in Martins Ferry. A son, Robert, lives in Eustis, Florida where he is associated with Lake County Hospital, Mr. and Mrs. Pickens have three grandchildren who attend school in Eustis. Mr. Pickens is a veteran of World War I and II. He served in both the Pacific and European Theaters of operation and has 11 years military service to his credit. Our new superintendent likes his job very much as it gives him an opportunity to meet new people every week in various walks of life. His only regret since entering the administration field, is the fact that he does not have close contact with the student body.
