HI-Y The l955-56 edition of the Hi-Y Club was exemplary of the fine Hi-Y Clubs that Martins Ferry has had in the past. Under the leadership of President Andy Rigas, and the excellent direction of advisors Leonard Vinic and Jack Weaver, the Hi-Y invariably took an active part in all school functions and the spirit of the club prevailed in nearly every activity. Decorating lor the formals, sponsoring Wiener roasts and hay rides, and spearheading the school spirit at pep rallies and parades were only part of the club's achievements. The joint Hi-Y and C. A. A, Ciym Show proved to be one of the Hi-Y's biggest accornplishinents. The success of the show brought hopes that the show might become an annual affair. Coocl leaders-and good followers-have been the formula of success for the Hi-Y of 1956. DRAMATIC CLUB The Dramatic Club is open to any student in high school who is inter- ested in dramatics. Any Dramatic Club member can become a Thespian by earning the required num- ber of points. Most ot these activities planned by the club are open for the student body to attend. The G. A. A. enters in many activities with other schools and clubs. We have a basketball and volleyball team of which we are very proud. The stage crew under the direction ot Mr. Bowers is a very busy group. The band does a splendid job of performing at all football games, as well as adding support to pep rallies during the season. At the final home game senior members of the band and their parents were honored. Alter marching season came the concert season, Here, too, the band really shines' Mr. Troxel and Mr. Cesario collaborated in the annual Youth and Music Broadcast over radio station WTRX, Both the glee clubs and the band presented selections of famous pieces as their part in the program. Then came the popular variety show with the theme April in Paris Most of BAND MEMBERS us never realize what a wealth of talent we have here at Martins Ferry until we view their efforts at this time. In spring, of course, we presented a concert and on the lighter side we had our big band banquet. Members of the band received awards in recognition of their efforts and faithful service. So you see the band really had a tremendous year in 1956. All this has been done under the direction of Mr. Paul Troxel and Mr. Joseph Cesario. The band wishes to extend its thanks and appreciation to them for their wonderful work in making the Martins Perry High School Band one of the best in the state. They scored just 46 points, while the opponents scored 196 markers. This season also marked the first year for Coaches Mel Adams, Don Miller, and Jack Dick. The Riders opened the season with powerful Linsly who issued the Riders a 21-O setback. The defensive team held quite well in the Moundsville encounter, but nevertheless the Riders lost 7-0. The next game was the Wheeling game in which offside and clipping penalties were very costly. Even in defeat the Riders proved they had a fighting spirit, final score Wheeling 19, Riders 0. The only new rival this season was Youngstown South, who made the Riders drop number four 14-'I. After holding mightly East Liverpool scoreless in the first half, the Riders just fell apart, as the Potters went wild for 40 points in the second half, final score 40-0. On the 36th meeting of Martins Ferry and Bridgeport, the Bulldogs were on their way to victory, their first in history. ln the third quarter they came back fighting, to down Bridgeport 13 to 12. Arch rival Bellaire proved to be to much for the Riders, who lost their ninth 33-7. L l --L 5-,ell . Linsly ......,.. Ferry . , . 0 Weirtori ....... . . . Perry Moundsville ...... . .
