During the last half, Union failed to penetrate beyond Ferry's H5-yard line. MARTIRS FERRY 20 IRIDGEPORT 0 The Bulldogs'came to the Ferry stadium via Bethesda to break their 'jinx,' but once more the powerful Purple overpowered them. The Riders led only 7-0 at half time, but scored 13 more points in the last half. HARTIRS FERRY 13 HHEELIHG 0 with the score tied 0-0 at the end of the second quarter, the Ferry eleven re- turned to the gridiron and proceeded to tame the wildcats. Each team accumulated six first downs. MARTIRS FERRY 28 TRIADELPHIA 7 The Riders had their goal line crossed for the first time this season, and the score stood 7-7 at the half. The Purple rallied in the last half and disposed of the Oak Park Crew. MARTIIS FERRY 26 MIRGO 0 Although the first half was rather slow, Ferry once more proved to be a last- half team. Bob Plotz starred defensively by blocking four Mingo punts, and Short led the scoring parade with three touchdowns. MARTIIS FERRY 6 IELLAIRE 0 The only touchdown of this tight defensive battle came early in the first quar- ter when Oancea hauled in a Short aerial. 10,13l persons jammed into the Bellaire stadium to see the action-packed game. HARTIIS FERRY 0 EAST LIVERPOOL 19 The mighty Potters led only 6-0 with eight minutes to play, but they packed too much 'wallop' and went on to score thirteen more points. This game was an example of a good big team's being better than a good little team. HARTIIS FERRY Sl STEUIEIVILLE 6 with the Riders using the forward pass as a potent weapon, the score stood 20- 0 at half time. Steubenville's lone tally came late in the fourth quarter, when the Big Red scored on the Purple reserves. HARTIIS FERRY LIISLY Because of an influenza epidemic at Linsly Institute, Linsly and Martins Ferry officials decided it would be best to postpone this football game. Linsly forfeit- ed the game, and Ferry received credit for it in the 0.V.A.C. standings. MAITIIS FERRY 12 RAISFIELD 7 The Purple Riders traveled to Mansfield, Ohio. This game proved to be rough and clever. The Riders outrushed the Tigers 188 yards to 162 yards. Mansfield's only score came on a trick play. ' For the second successive year, the Martins Ferry defenders of the 0.V.A.C. Championship have won the distinction of having another beautiful trophy placed in the trophy cabinet. They were again named the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Champions. Congratulations! MAX CRONE 4 CO. 1310-1312 Market St., wheeling, w.Va. . . kg S Q ffm 2 49 48 47 l . IN I 1 Alix V Vw SENIOR-FOOTBALL MEMBERS Ralph Short - Co-Captain - Fullback 'Ramrod' Ralph was an important part in the Ferry gridiron squad. His offense threats included line-plunging, punting, and passing. On defense, he could give physical as well as moral support by bucking the line. Ralph was honored on the All-Ohio second team. lob Plot: - Co-Captain - Tackle Equally proficient in offense and defense, time and time again, the hefty tackle broke through the opponent's forward wall to block a punt or to spill an enemy back for a long loss. Bob's fame was wide spread as is shown by his selection on the All-Ohio first string and by his appointment to west Point. John Vroteoe - Center 'Corky' played a fine brand of ball all season. He was strong at the center slot, and as a line backer he had no equal. Many touchdowns resulted from his excellent down-field blocking. Eugene lurnetta - End Gene was an outstanding pass receiver, and his form was seen dashing across the goal line several times during the season. 'B' performed well at the terminal position. Burnetta was good on de- fense, and it was very seldom that any opponent circled his end. Joeeph Dopler - Tackle Joe was one of the unsung heroes of the Riders' seven blocks of granite, He came into his own in the very first game of the season. The lanky tackle improved throughout the entire season. Joeeph Gallagher - Tackle Joe, though inexperienced in varsity action, performed very well when called upon. Toward the end of the season, Joe was great. He re- ceived little glory, but he should be praised for remaining on the reserve squad even though the breaks refused to come his way. Michael Roy - End Mike Performed with the Varsity at the beginning of the season. He was the number-three end and saw a good deal of action. Roy was an excellent pass snagger. with his determination and fighting spirit, he developed into a fine end. NAY'S SHOE STORE FOOTBALL RESERVES The boys who sit on the bench throughout the football season are truly responsible for the way the first eleven performs on the gridiron. These gallant boys play against the varsity in order to reveal mistakes that should not be made in a game. The reserves are never shown any mercy by the Varsity. The football reserves are an important cog in the Ferry touchdown mach- ine. Our reserves played six games in a schedule of their own and won five. The future has a truly great team in the making. ATHLETIC MANAGERS These boys with the waterbuckets and towels deserve much credit. Their lives aren't exactly easy as they cater to coaches and players. They are the men behind the scenes, rubbing sprain- ed ligaments and 'Charley horses,' tying shoe laces and shoulder-pad laces, taping ankles, and cleaning the locker rooms. Our hats are off to these fellows who do not share in the glory of the athletic season, but who are indirectly responsible for every 'Rider' victory. F. 639 1935-li IASKETIALL SEASOI December Martins Ferry High School's basketball quintet made its inaugural debut under the guidance of Ralph 'Blondie' Gartrell by defeating the visiting Mingo Indians 59-39. wheeling Central invaded the Ferry gym only to be repulsed M1-32. East Liverpool was hitting from all parts of the court and 'knocked off' the Riders M3-28. January The Purple Riders opened the new year against Toronto, and the Red Knights eked out a U8-B6 decision. Overcoming a first-half lead, the proud Purple romped to a 68-M5 victory. Linsly Cadets almost upset the Riders, but a last-second foul-shot humbled them 33-32. The Purple Riders then faced the Bellaire Big Reds and emerged with a M4-31 vic- tory. The next victims were the wildcats of wheeling, when Ferry came out on top in a scoring duel 61-56. Although a pre-game favorite, the Bridgeport Bulldogs succumbed to the Purple's last-quarter rally 37-33 Steubenville held a three-point margin at half-time, but Ferry's lash half bucket brigade disposed of the Big Reds 63-48. Gartrell's crew then traveled to Toronto, only to see the Gem City Knights defeat them 68-28 February The Purple Riders then journeyed to Bellaire and handed the Big Reds a 38-20 set-back. Steubenville was host to Ferry, and the Riders returned home with a 55-BB win. Union's Ironmen then fell before the Ferry gang U6-37. Ferry led warren Consolidated for three quarters, but the Ramblers' last-quarter spree enabled them to edge the Purple 62-53. The closest game of the season occurred at the Bridgeport gym when the Bulldogs forced the Purple into an overtime period, only to lose 55-5B on a fast second free throw. East Liverpool once more was poison to the Riders U2-32. The last scheduled game was with wheeling, and the Riders were red-hot as they ran away with the Wildcats 58-25. Thus, the Martins Ferry Purple Riders ended the 19M5-M6 basketball season with a record of 13 wins and 5 losses. TOURNAMENT Martins Ferry opened tournament play by overpowering a weak Shady- side club 62-29. Although Bridgeport had given the Riders two very tough games in regular-season play, the Purple Riders were an inspired crew and 'knocked off' the Bulldogs 60-33. The Riders' next opponent was East Liverpool: Ferry led for more than a half, but the Potters showed championship fo'm and nosed out the Ferry quintet nu-36. Martins Ferry Nigh school enrolls 760 stud- ents, and 1597 young people are registered in our elementary schools comprising grades one to eight and kindergarten The Board of Education employs 89 teach- ers to guide and supervise our pupils in their learning experiences. Thirty teachers are employed in the high school and 59 in the various elementary schools. All eighth grade pupils are housed in the Central building and use the entire second floor. Pupils in the grades below the eighth are distributed according to districts.and building capacities in the five elementary schools. Our presenz buildings were const ructed over a wide span of years. The older North build- ing was -built in 18814. The newer building on the North site was completed in 1915. South school dates back to 1889. Central School with the town clock located in its tower, was Con.. structed in 1895. The other buildings were er- ected in a comparatively short period of ti-me starting with Mackey in 1917, Elm in 1919, and the present high school building in 1922. Since that time there has been no new school building construction except the Trade School building which was erected in 19u1 as a co-operative project of the National Youth Administration and our Board of Education. This building came into complete possession of the system in Oct- ober, 19411. Charles A. Taylor, Superintendent K Presented by members of the Senior Cl Processional ---- --------------- ---.-. Four long years ago when our course had begun, we all looked ahead--when the task would be doneg And now dawns the day we long waited for, The day we are graduates--to linger no more. Anticipation was greatg our goal but a dream: we were but puppets in life's little scheme, But, somehow, today we feel we have done A little of something, the race to have won. Out teachers, our leaders, great wisdom display: The traditions of 'Ferry' have helped all the way: Today we go out from these stately walls And hope to find a niche in Fame's halls. Some will rise to great heights and be known far and wide, Some lack the ambition, and fall by the side, But of one thing we're sure-that we all can achieve Good things and great--if we remember old 'Shreve.' Peggy Bruney '06 CLASS HISTORY THE CLASS SOIG WE WON'T BE BACK NEXT FALL Ulmer 'How Deep Is the 0cean j And now we are leaving Never more to return. Our hearts are grieving, Our hearts do yearn. And now that we're leaving good old Ferry High we're saying to you a final goodbye: And, as a whole class, here let us depart Each one alone, to have a new start. Never to forget the past Parting's here at last, And we'll think of it alh we won't be back next fall. words by Bob Martin and John Harrison In their history, the members of the Class of 1936 have attempted to narrate and dramatize certain highlights of their four years in Ferry High School. Beginning with their entrance as bewildered but not too green freshmen, they have followed their course through the sopnornore year in which they displayed the usual amount of sophistication and self-confidence. In their junior year, they acquired that grand and glorious feeling that comes when one achieves the status of upper classman, Their senior year was marked by the usual rush of activities and the realization that their school life would be ended all too soon. CLASS PROPHECY Havirg looked into the past and reminisced a bit, the seniors found much pleasure in specu- lating about the future. If their predictions come true, there will be an unusal 'crop' of great musicians, professional, great, and near-great men and women in the famous Class of 19U6- i CLASS CRUHILE The Class of 'no believes that it's good for a graduating class to get certain things 'off its chest.' With this in mind, it has indulged in a regular grumble session. Naturally the assemblies in the gym and all the inconveniences of a Crowded school building received their share of attention. CLASS HILL Every graduating class has prized possessions and, out of its vast experience, valuable advice to leave to those who remain in school, the Class of 'u6 is no exception. lt took great pleasure in making its bequests to the members of the faculty and student body.
