This World of Tomorrow will demand of us above all - vision. Only vision coupled with ceaseless endeavor and a courageous spirit can bring about friendship and co-operation among the peoples of the earth. Our sense of humor will help us lace with equanimity the difficulty of making this a world of peace. Mary Green '45 X QE fl l-L 'Qlffx f E D U C AT I O N J BOARD OF EDUCATION Dr. E. A. Who, having ex' perienced all the years of high school, would not rather be a junior? That is the year in which you find real joys and pleasures. As a freshman, you were too small to take part in the main athletics, and you were continually called greenhorns. As a sophomore, you did not notice much change. You were just leaving the greenhorn stage. As a junior, you can look forward to another year of sports, enjoy all privileges and good times, plan for next year and your coming graduation. All this-and more, too--is yours to enjoy for another year. Your junior year becomes the best, lt gives more pleasure than the rest, lt gives a feeling of content, Just as if it's heaven sent. In your work and in your play, You find some gain throughout the day, A gain to fulfill your dream of life, A gain to keep you far from strife. So let's give a cheer for the junior year, And for all the juniors that are here. May all of you, whate'er your name, Find your glory and your fame. Arzella Sole '46 FRED E. PACKER . . . The year of '45 finds the class of '47 hale and hearty sophomores who have come through the freshman year without physical mishap or mental disability and have outgrown the name greenhorn. To the sophomore, the senior is someone to look up to, the junior, someone to tolerate, and the freshman, some- one to ignore. The class of '47 will be the finest class ever to pass through the portals of old Ferry High. Recognition has been given this class because of its individuality and co-operative spirit. And so, until the class of '47 takes its rightful place in the celebrated Hall of Fame, it will go forward for Ferry High. .lean Stullenburger '47 Yes, we leave them, so they say, Footprints on the sands of time, But they soon are washed away By the freshies next in line. Oi 'o -u as as 2. as-E 3 E FOOTBALL REVIEW OF 1944 Ohio Valley Conference Champions Owing to the graduation in 1943 of nine regulars from the starting line-up, the Purple Rider football team was severely handicapped. The loss of such stars as Nick Vrotsos, Paul Rees, Roy Mattern, Sam DeFede, Jack Scheehle, Karl Kindberg, Ed Hanke, Bill McFarland, and Charles Vargo made it seem impossible to replace them and to keep the standard of football expected at the home of the Purple Riders. The great season of '43 set a difficult task for the squad of '44, Co-captains Joseph and Orzolek, along with Mamone and Henderson, con- stituted the nucleus around which to build a new team. Practice sessions started August 21. As these continued, new names began to appear, and a new team was developing. The boys were young in years, the average age was sixteen. As a team, Ferry was heavy in spots but light in other positions, the average weight was one hundred sixty-two pounds. This team was a surprise to the town as well as to the coaches and players themselves. Martins Ferry was the envy of the valley, however, the latter part of the season was not quite up to the pace set in the beginningibecause of inf juries occurring to key players: Joseph, Short, and Thomas. It was the first team in the history of the school to win from the Steubenville Big Reds , the Wheeling Wildcats , and the Bellaire Big Reds -all in the same season. The first six games were taken in stride with the Purple Riders not permitting a point to be scored against them. Then came the game with the giants, out- weighed seventeen pounds per man, the boys journeyed to East Liverpool, where Ferry had to yield to weight and unlimited reserve power, l4-0. Both knew, however, that they had played a great opponent. The next week, Steu- benville was out in the defeat column by a score ot 6-0, showing that Martins Ferry could bound back after a loss. This is the real measure of a team. With several Riders fairly on the hospital list, Linsly won 'Z-0, mainly be- cause of a fumbled punt on the five-yard-line which Linsly successfully re- covered. Next Martins Ferry tied the score 0-0 with Wheeling Central, the 1943 champions of West Virginia. Martins Ferry High School was proud when the Purple Riders were declared champions of the Ohio Valley Conference, with only twenty-one points scored against them during the season. E. STIFEL CO. Wheeling's Friendly Store SENIORS OI-' THE FOOTBALL SQUAD Eugene Joseph-Co-captain-Halfback We can never forget the long runs of the Ghost . He has made history for Ferry High as well as obtained glory for himself. He was the most flashy back Ferry has had for several years. His honors were many: the right to wear No. 44, co-captain of the Purple Riders in 1944, All-State halfback of 1943, a member of the All-Valley team, All-West Virginia team, and All-Eastern- Ohio team. Admired by all, Eugene Joseph was a real loss to Ferry , but he will be just as a great a gain to the Armed Forces. Good luck to the Ghostl Charles Orzolek-Co-captain-Tackle Who doesn't know Orzie ? He played tackle perfectly. We can't forget those blocked kicks and hard tackles made at the time they were needed most. Orzie goes down in our Hall of Fame as an All-Eastern-Ohio, All-Valley, All-West Virginia tackle. Bill Fithen-Guard Bill came to Ferry High from Tiltonsville in his senior year. Possessed of a fighting heart and a will for hard work, he developed into a fine guard. We only wish he had another season with us. Jack Henderson-Guard .lack was the hard-kicking boy of the squad. An experienced guard from the season of 1943 and expecting a great season in '44, he had to undergo an appendectomy in July. He also broke a bone in his hand in early practice. Finally, .lack made up for the time he lost in the first part of the season. He is now in the Navy Air Corps. Larry Mamone-Guard Although weighing but 160 pounds, Larry was surely dynamite in the Ferry line. Through his hard work and consistent playing, he gained the recogni- tion that was most certainly due him: a place on the All-State team of 1944, and the All-Valley and All-Eastern-Ohio teams. Don Thomas-Quarterback Don played the most difficult position on the team, the blocking spot in the backfield. He played a great game all year even under the handicap ot a knee injury which occurred during the summer. Don's tackling on defense was great to see. His position will be hard to fill in 1945. Bob Voytecek-End Bob was retarded in his football career by a broken ankle in his sophomore year. He did not play his junior year, but he certainly did in his senior year. With his determined and fighting spirit, he developed into one of the best ends in the whole Ohio Valley. Congratulations Class ot '45 LOYAL ORDER OF MOOSE, MARTINS FERRY LODGE No. 1532 FOOTBALL RESERVES The reserves are the players who are the work-horses of any team, no team is better than its reserves. It is they who condition and develop the varsity by providing competition in practice and scrimmage. Most of Ferry's reserves are underclassmen, thus we expect to hear much more about them in the future. Our coaches have completed the ground work for successful teams for the next three years by the development of reserve players. The entire squad con- sisted ot seven seniors, twelve juniors, eleven sophomores, sixteen freshmen, and eighteen boys ot the seventh and eighth grades. FOOTBALL MANAGERS Much credit is due the managers ot the Purple Riders. Always alert and ever ready to do the many tasks set to their hands, their work was accomplished with rare devotion and with the utmost efficiency. They earned the highest praise and were given that praise by grateful coaches and football supporters. A week later, the Ferrians journeyed to Marietta, where they met with their only regular season setback in a close 53-49 game. Mingo was the next foe of the Riders as they again hit their stride trampling a veteran Mingo tive. The Zanesville game scheduled for Friday, December 28, was postponed owing to bad weather conditions. Ou January 2, the team traveled to Toronto and won a close 34-31 game! Next on the list was Tiltonsville, which gave what was to be the closest game of the regular season. At the end of the regular game time, the score was 48-48, but Ferry out-lasted a game band of Ramblers , going on to victory in the over- time period, the final score being 59-49. The Purple Riders really hit mid-season form knocking Linsly, Bellaire, and Wheeling from the ranks of the undefeated with decisive wins. The Potters of East Liverpool were the next toes meeting the same fate as the others, 52-45. The Riders then disposed of a weak Wheeling team 53-19, the smallest number ot points scored against the team during the season. The Perrians were red hot as they disposed of Bridgeport and Steu- benville, 57-33 and 49-35. Toronto was victimized 47-21, as Joseph played his last game for Martins Ferry High School. The Big Reds of Bellaire were defeated a second time 55-27. Steubenville journeyed to Ferry on February 6, only to be vanquished 63-35, Union was next, losing 56-26. The Riders then faced Tiltonsville again in what proved to be another thrilling game, but again the Purple topped with a close score of 35-33. The Riders proceeded to defeat Bridgeport, East Liverpool, and Wheeling, tor the second time, and finished the season with an imposing record of eighteen games won and one lost. TOURNAMENT M. There they defeated a stubborn Mingo team before losing to East Liverpool in a thrilling game. Q MEMBERS OF THE VARSITY Jack Jones Eudy Joseph Bob Voytecek Eugene Ghost Joseph-Forward--Senior The Ghost was the sparkplug of this year's team, and he might be called the balance-wheel as well because of his calm assurance. His difficult shots and brilliant floor game were spectacular. Because of his all-around ability and his sportsmanship, he was named forward on the All-Ohio team. Eudy was inducted into the Army in the latter half of the regular season schedule. Bob Voytecek-Guard-Senior This was Bob's first year on the varsity. His ball-hawking, uncanny shoot- ing, and brilliant floor play, were of the greatest value to the team. Bob was seiected captain, succeeding Eugene Joseph when he entered the armed forces. He received honorable mention on the All-Ohio basketball team. Ralph Short-Center-Junior Ralph's task of filling the shoes of Alex Groza, our All-Ohio center of last year, was a difficult feat. Undaunted by that, Ralph became our high-scorer of the year, and his playing of the rebounds was of immeasurable worth to his team. He has been elected captain of next year's team. Moreover, Ralph re- ceived honorable mention on the All-Ohio team. Great things are expected of this player next year. John Corky Vrotsos-Guard-Junior This also was .lohn's first year of varsity playing. This lad played a superb floor game, it was thrilling to see him bring that ball down the floor. Through- out the season, his team-work was perfect. Virgil Oancea-Forward-Sophomore Virgil was front-court mate of Eugene Joseph. An excellent shot, a clever hnll-handler, and a good defensive player made Oancea one of the stalwarts of this year's court performers. He has a splendid future ahead of him. Jack Jones-Forward-Senior Upon .Tosoph's departure, .lack was shifted into .loseph's position. Being cool-headed and courageous, .Tones filled that place so meritoriously as to re- ceive the praise of all who follow the court game. CARVERS' I. G. A. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY One of the most coveted honors which may be earned by a pupil during his high-school career is election to the National Honor Society. Fiiteen per cent of the membership of the senior class is elected to the society, as well as tive per cent of the junior class. A chapter was installed in Martins Ferry High School in October, 1931. In the past fourteen years, only three hundred eighty-six students have been elected to membership in this chapter. Selection is based upon four principles: scholarship, character, leadership, and service. To be eligible in scholarship, the student must be in the upper third of his class, in order to determine the rank of candidates in leadership, points are given for all extra-curricular activities. Service and character are based upon a combined pupil-teacher classification: the eligible pupils and the faculty rate the upper third of the class in numerical order, according to their estimation, based upon such characteristics as willingness to work, co-operation, honesty, reliability, neatness, cheerfulness, and poise. The emblem of the National Honor Society is the keystone with the flaming torch, which symbolizes the spirit of the society. They relieve her of routine work, receive valuable training, do a definite service to the school, and, at the some time, they learn to meet with dignity and helpfulness those who use the library. The girls also enjoy social activities outside of library hours. They held a valentine luncheon in February and are planning a book-review and tea for April and a farewell luncheon for May. JUNIOR RED CROSS CABINET The Junior Red Cross Cabinet, reorganized in January, is an active high-school organization. The cabinet of ten members, which meets monthly under the supervision of Miss Blackford, has engaged in many activities: aiding the Junior Red Cross in making twenty-four educational boxes and kits, soliciting blood- donors, and contributing to many community projects. A Pied Cross show was presented in April in order to raise funds for later use in worthwhile projects. Chairman ........ ........ Throughout the year, many services are rendered such as in the March-of-Dimes Campaign, Town Unit Tag Day, Clothing-Collection Campaign, and devotional services for outside groups. Many social activities are enjoyed by each member. A few highlights of the year's program have been our Halloween party, joint meeting with Hi-Y and Junior Girl Reserve Clubs, mother-and-daughter tea, farewell to seniors, and the Girl Reserve dance. One of the aims of the club is to help each girl become a better citizen of tomorrow by assuming her own particular responsibility and those related to the welfare of others. If this aim is realized, the Girl Reserves will feel that their services and efforts have been worthwhile, and they will be content in know- ing that they have helped to build a better community, a better nation. The first event of the school year was the informal initiation of the new fish , which was followed by the formal initiation and the annual Wiener roast. After the Bellaire-Martins Perry football game, the first after-game dance was held. These dances proved to be very popular with the students. The an- nual junior-senior football game was won by the seniors with a score of 13-7. Several games were played with neighboring schools, but the Hi-Y team com- pleted the season undefeated and untied. The Hi-Y basketball team was runner-up in the Ohio Valley tournaments. A joint meeting was held with the Home Eco- nomics Club as well as the Senior Girl Reserves. A special dance was held in order to buy phonograph records for Fletcher General Hospital. The last event was the annual Sweetheart Dance , which was the most successful of the entire year. The adviser is Mr. Keim.
