AND CDNTE Each year Martins Ferry High enters its band, soloists, and ensemble groups in the District Band Contest. A I lSuperiorl rating or a II lExcellentl rating at the District Contest is entitled to enter the State Contest. This year our band received a I rating at the District Contest held at Bellaire on March 31. The band played these selections: Americans We, by Fillmore, Raymond Overture, by Thomas, and La Dame de Coeur, by Gagnier. At the District Instrumental Solo and Ensemble Contest held April ll, at New Concord, the Ferrians received nine State ratings out ot twelve events. Those receiving State ratings were: Trumpet solo, Philip Plumby, I, Clarinet solo, Joe Campbell, I, Bassoon solo, Maxine Campbell, II, Tuba solo, Rex Hutson, I, Woodwing quartet, Phyllis Green, Jane Campbell, Maxine Compbell, Catherine Ochsenbein, II, Clarinet quartet, Catherine Ochsenbein, .lane Newland, Phyllis Lupton, Norman George, II, Mixed Clarinet quartet, Joe Campbell, Jim Hall, Norman George, Kenneth Dennis, Il, Tru-mpet quartet, Paul Pollock, Jack Jones, Philip Plumby, Bill Parker, I. On April 25, the band traveled to Columbus to enter the State Band Contest. The band played the same numbers as were played at the District Contest. They received a II rating in all events. The State Instrumental Solo and Ensemble Contest will be held on May 9. The result ot this contest we will not know until after the book has gone to press. The honors achieved by Mr. Cochrane and his students this year have not been attained by sporadic bursts of ettort, but by perseverance in spite ot the most discouraging odds.
