OHIO VALLEY PRINTING COMPANY ANNUAL VARIETY SHOW This year's production, again directed by Howard Cochran, ranks with the outstanding in Perry Variety Show history. Edna Louise Marquardt excelled as Mistress of Ceremonies, and the orchestra, under the direction of Jessie Sisley, rendered the selections in a masterful way, In the Hi Neighbor number the girls of the cast circulated through the hall and, while singing, shook hands with those in the audience. Star performances were made by the vocal soloists, Eleanor Barker, Isabel Hodor, Rita Schultz, Geraldine Bachman, .luanita Shafer and Mary Emma Blinco June Hellner proved a surprising comedienne as she danced, sang, and laughed her way through Deep in the Heart of Texas. Nancy Davis was featured on her saxophone, violin and piano, while Alex Vargo's nimble fingers beat out Moonlight Cocktail Serenade, Ethel Pocsilc made a hit with her cowgirl yodeling. Joe Voytecek, football and track star, was seen in a new role, that of a gossiper, Ernie Dull and Bob Lavy made free-hand drawings while the show was in progress. An added attraction was given by the graceful dancing team of Madalyn Burdess and Betty June Cevola. A number was played by the Trumpet Quartet that qualified for the State Contest. The patriotic finale proved to be a hit of hits. lt featured Edna Louise Marquardt as Miss Marine, Nancy Davis as Miss Aviation, and Jessie Sisley as Miss Navy. Each of the three was introduced with music appropriate for the branch of the service which she represented, and after the trio had been brought to the front and center, the orchestra went into The Star Spangled Banner, and the entire audience arose in tribute to the National Anthem. We might have acted up a bit, And made our teachers mad, But the spark in our hearts the teachers lit, When we part, will make us sad. Coach Tommy Jones with dimples deep, is a regular sport for all to meet. And Sandy Sandrock with his cute bow ties, Is the pride and joy of all the guys. Then our old pal Thomas at bat at the pool, Trying to hit safe in keeping up cool. Goes Corporal Hopkins the heart breaking slam, We praise him for leaving to join Uncle Sam. Fine Charlie Stroup gnawing his nails, Back in a corner checks annual sales. Mr. Frank Stallings of the great singing brand, As a Band Chaperone is a humdinger grand. We'll remember Miss Vennum the teacher of art, And when found chewing gum to the office we'd start. We learned cooking and sewing from Miss Craft and Miss Lane Whom We'll recall in good housekeeping again and again. There was one fine old class where we failed to get smart, In a sense of the word - O, you know Fred Hart. As we trudged to school late in our ears rang the call, REPORT! Mr. May announcing. Place: DEEtention Hall. Let's remember Floyd Baker and his basketball champs, The pride of Ohio, and big shots of the vamps. Here's to good old Pop Cochrane, the Wiz of the band, Who conducts Ferry High, the best in the land. Two favorites, sweet Lois Sharp and petite Tootie Reese, Take a tug at our hearts hard to release. For our schoolmaster deluxe Superintendent Fred Teal, Words will not express the honor we feel. We could go on and on from the school record score, But We'll sign off right here and bore you no more. We hope to meet often in the life we pass through, But now we remain yours truly, Class of '42. JESSIE SISLEY CHAS. Mary Lou Gow, Junior Editor - No introductions necessary, we think. This 1S the gal who is going to undergo the trials and tribulations ot the editor next year. Bow Bowen, Advertising Manager - l-lmmmm, it being advertising manager means to date Marion Lysinger and to play basketball, the Ferrian has never had a better one than Frosty. Evelyn Underwood, Features Editor - This is the person on whom the blame for the features section should be put, but considering the fact that she did so little for the features section, you can't blame her tor what IS in it, rather than for what ISN'T. Anna Orend, Business Manager - Aha! business. Well a little bird told me Miss Orend had other business than Ferrian to worry about. Bob Forsythe, Sales Manager - Here's a super salesman. He can sell anything. He even sold his heart to Patty Lane. fProbably on the installment plan so he can get it back it she fails to live up to the terms of the contract.l Grace Schwender and Gloria Mattern, Typists - Guaranteed to misspell and mispunctuate every write-up. Don't blame them though, someone put the keys on their typewriters in the wrong places. Ned Schurtz, Cartoonist - The only arty member of the staff. We are truly lucky to have euch a good humorist as Ned on the staff. .lack Blair, Sports Editor - All the athletes cater to .lack in order to get a good build-up in this little volume. Mr. Stroup, Advisor - The trials and tribulations ot the editor. Mr. Stallings, Proof Reader - He deletes mistakes. lt you find a faux pas, tell him about it. That's what we have him for. This was a new experience, since no Girls Glee Club from Martins Ferry High School had ever entered a contest. Their efforts were so successful at Bellaire that these girls were eligible to sing at the State Contest in Columbus, March 24th. Since Martins Ferry is a Class A school the students representing Martins Ferry in music contest cannot compete with schools having an enrollment of less than one thousand. At Columbus, the chorus competed with city schools and received a rating of ll, or Excellent. The school can feel proud of any glee club which represents the school so splendidly in their first music contest. Members singing in the contest are as follows: Emily Anderson, Irene Baker, Patricia Barton, Vera Beck, Erma Benning, Josephine Chickerella, Lillian Clark, Hay Dobbins, Luella Edington, Betty .lane Evans, Kathleen Goodhart, Henrietta Neiniger, Nancy Hipkins, Allie Hudspeth, Sally Joseph, June Hellner, Lois King, Eileen Lengacher, Lois Lipphardt, Marion Lysinger, Eris McCann, Ellen Mitchell, Anna Orend, Katherine Perry, Mary Lou Rutter, Helen Schuback, Georganne Sisley, Dolores Slack, Patty Sommers, Thelma Sterling, Pauline Stein, Dorothy Stubock, Elsie Throngate, Betty Tucker, Hannah Wilkins. The Girls Ensemble, composed of nine members, represented Martins Ferry High in the Ensemble Contest, held at New Concord, April ll. Having received a Superior rating in the District Contest, they will make the trip to Columbus to sing in the State Contest, May 8th. This is he third year that a Girls Ensemble has been entered in the contest, and likewise the third time the girls have merited a trip to the State event. The results of this contest cannot be given, due to the fact that the year book goes to press before the 8th ot May. You'd think We were a bunch ot dears, But we won't be sweet treshmen long with all these seniors 'round, We'll prob'ly just get like them, and soon We'll wear their crown. The days and Weeks and months, they soon will pass us up, And no longer will we be sweet treshies, but sophomores. Darn the luck! And so to you, O Preshies ot the Class ot '45, To accomplish these things, l'Ve told you, All you have to do is strive. BOB WINSTEL. A. KEHRER 8: SONS Flowers ' pr! L' ns HZQTH Organ ORGANIZATIONS One of the most enjoyed extra-curricular activities in Martins Ferry High School is the participation in club activities. We have twenty-four organizations with an approximate combined membership of l,0O0. This fact certainly shows the interest and appreciation which the student body has for clubs. Students become interested in various subjects and hobbies, and when the clubs were formed it was with the hope that each individual would find a club which suited his or her interests. Each of the clubs has a different idea or interest on which it is based, but all have the same primary purpose, the promotion of good fellowship among the students. Each club elects officers and learns to carry on its meetings in the proper parliamentary procedure. The officers must bear responsibilities and plan and provide interesting programs for their club. Most of the clubs had men and women from the business and professional world to come to speak on some subjects of interest to their particular club. They have had movies, book reviews, and parties, all of which the members have thoroughly enjoyed. Each of the clubs has an advisor or advisors from the faculty, who act as guides and supervisors to the members in all of their activities. It is through their help that our club program is made possible, we couldn't do without them. The combination of the Junior and Senior Girl Reserve Clubs boasts the largest membership. This club is affiliated with the Y. W. C. A., and there are branches at high schools all over the United States. The Y. M. C. A. sponsors a similar club for boys, the Hi -Y Club. These clubs sell programs at the football games, sponsor bake sales, sell pencils, etc., in order to earn money for club activities. The two most popular club activities of the school year are probably the Girl Reserve dance and the Hi- Y Sweetheart dance. Those who are interested in music belong to the Glee Clubs, where they become acquainted with good music and receive vocal training. This club sponsors the annual spring concert, One of the popular girls' clubs is the Home Ec. Club, which is affiliated with the National Home Economics Club. Here girls learn ways to make themselves and their homes more attractive. They, too ,sponsor many activities. The Smoothies Club is another with a large membership. Its membership is restricted to freshmen and it aims to acquaint the so-called greenhorn with Emily Post. The members of the band and orchestra have a Music Club, which was begun last year, and which has become one of the leading clubs in two short years. It sponsors the Variety Show, an outlet for the talents of our thespians and musicians. The Junior Classical League, which is affiliated with the National Junior Classical League, is one of the oldest organizations in our school. This club is for Latin students, and is famed for its scholars. The Junior Red Cross Club is interested in helping others. They learn first aid and do tasks which aid the Senior Red Cross organization. The philatelists belong to the Stamp Club, those with a scientific turn of mind, to the Science Club. Seldom does a student go through all four years without joining at least one club. If he doesn't, it is by his own choice, for everyone is afforded equal opportunity to membership in the club of his choice. At the beginning of the tirst semester each class selected two of its members, a boy and a girl, to run as candidates ior the most popu- lar boy and girl in Martins Ferry High School. Each person who purchased a Perrian was given a ballot on which he wrote the names of the two candidates he preferred. It was a close race, but when the votes were tabulated, Edna and Bill came out on top, They are both members ot the band, and Edna is a member of the orchestra as well. She also served as Mistress oi Ceremonies at the Variety Show. Both are active in extra- curricular activities and have earned by their personalities the right to be called the most popular boy and girl in Ferry High. BETTY LETZELTER, '42. Be Yder, Gunnish, Young, Holt, Toth, Sn Geer, FOOTBALL Here they are: The 1941 State Co-Champions of Ohio! The Purple Riders mowed down all their seasonal foes in championship fashion, accounting for 333 points, as compared to 19 for their opponents. The best team in Ohio with the best record in the state. The Gridiron band of Riderland started rolling Friday night, September 19, and did not stop until it had vanquished its last foe on Saturday afternoon, November 22. A 33.3 points per game average, against a 1.9 point average, amply shows why the 1941 edition of the M. F. H. S. grid squad was one of the greatest to represent the city of Martins Ferry. Gomer Jones, 1941 mentor of the Riders, in his first year presented a team that Won its 10 seasonal games and did what no other Ferry team has done since 1931: They defeated both the Wildcats from Wheeling and the Big Reds from Bellaire in the same season. lt was the first time Ferry had whipped the Big Reds on their own field since 1935. They paid back both upsets of 1940 by routing Moundsville and edging Wheeling. The team as a whole went through the entire season playing heads-up football even with defeat staring them in the face. Not once did the Jones Boys give up the ship, and in the end it paid the dividends of a perfect season. After having defeated everything on their schdule, the Riders were invited to play in the Toledo Bowl game, opposing Toledo Libbey ,the champions of that city. This game was called by many a championship game to establish the champs of Ohio. The champs of the Ohio Valley, who were never behind in any game during the season, were never headed, but Libbey scored 14 points also to end the game in a 14-14 tie. Although the Purple and White were outweighed 15 pounds to the man, they put up a gallant fight which was not a losing one. After this game many proclaimed the river front school as having one of the most courageous bands of gridiron warriors in the State of Ohio. A record of ll games played, 10 wins, no losses, and one tie, belongs to the great team. We salute the l94l Gridiron Champions of the State of Ohio! Schedule 40 .... .... S t. Jack was the scatback of the team, but he also delivered many crushing blocks to opponents who got in his way. LOUIS Chief GROZA jTacklej All-State, All-Valley, in fact all everything. This hulk of athlete captained the 1941 gridders. He had a wide cruising range as he demonstrated to each and every opponent. His educated toe, his vicious tackles and blocks, proved him to be one of the most excellent athletes ever to come out ot Ferry Hi. RUSSELL CUNNINGHAM qrackiej Russ didn't have much chance to make the Varsity this year, but he filled in prominently with the second-stringers. BOB MCILVAIN jEndj Boy, did you see 'Mac' catch that pass! was echoed many times throughout the season. This glue-fingered end, playing his first and last year on the Varsity, turned in many sterling performances long to be remembered. TONY SURIANO jcemefj Tony was practically stopped cold in what would have been his greatest year, breaking his ankle before the season started. Being out of uniform the major portion of the season, he returned to do reserve duty. CHRIS MELEANOS flfullbackj Christo will be remembered long for his bull-like charges when yardage was needed to be gained, and he usually picked it up. Chris, like the rest ot the squad, never gave up but fought harder when the going got rough. He also proved to be a ferocious lineman, playing guard and defense. JULIUS MOZIE jTacklej This was the hard-luck man of Ferry this year. Being hurt before both the Bellaire and Toledo Libbey battles, he played in each game, and did not falter due to his injuries. Julius, also playing his tirst and last year on the Varsity, will leave a position hard to till. PAUL WESTLAKE jGuardl Although Paul was not a starter he entered almost every tray. His weight proved to be his main handicap, but he was still full of fight and pep. CARL MAMONE jlindj Carl was another valuable cog in the reserve squad, seeing much active duty with the Varsity. WAYNE PINNEY jGuardj Wayne played his position with much success until he was hampered by injuries midway in the season. This diminutive guard played a defensive halfback until he was forced to hang up his togs at mid-season. Finney is now serving his country in the U. S. Marines, having joined during the Christmas vacation. JOE VOTYCEH jEndj Another in the air corps division. Joe proved his worth many times on offense and defense. His ability to diagnose plays and break them up, as well as an excellent pass receiver, showed him to be an important cog in the Ferry stonewall. Count the hours the football team works, double the total, and you have the approximate total of hours the managers put in. Before every practice session and every game they get ready the equipment, and afterwards they put it back into shape. In other words, the manager staff of a football team is just as necessary as the team itself. JACK BLAIR, '42 KAUFMAN'S For Your Formals, Wheeling, W. Va. PURPLE 8: WHITE INN Contections and School Supplies BASKETBALL 1942 The 1942 Purple Courtsters were a combine with which every opponent had to reckon, This quintet hung up the best seasonal record in the history ot Ferry Hi. The Riders started the season with a string of 19 straight wins leit by the 1941 State Champs, and were able to stretch this string oi victories to 33, equalling the Valley record set by Wheeling, before Steubenville was able to snap their winning streak, Two games later the Riders went down to their only other regular season deteat at the hands of the Tiltonsville Cribbsmen. They went into tournament play with a record of 20 wins and 2 defeats. They accumulated 2 more victories, making them district champs, and entitling them to go into the sectional tournament at Steubenville. Here they met defeat at the hands of the Big Reds of Steubenville. The basketball year ended with the Bakerites amassing 962 points while a meager 140 poinst to their opponents, an average per game of 56.3 to 38.5. The boys in purple proved time and time again that they could take it and give it back. Ferry fought until the final gunshot, many times trailing their opponents and rallying in a last minute stand to pull the game oft the coals. Their adeptness at the foul line, coupled with uncanny ability to sink goals from any point on the hardwood, made them a standout not only in the valley, but also in the entire state. But the old saying, A team is no stronger than its reserves, still goes, There was more than one game in which a reserve got the Varsity out of the frying pan. The Little Riders had a win streak of their own, stringing up a row of 20 foes' scalps over a two- year span. The team played a schedule ot 20 games, oi which they lost only 2. The seconds rattled the hoop for 904 points, while limiting their opponents to 569-an average of 45.2 to 28.4. The reserves were almost entirely manned by sophomores, which will give the future Purple ball-handlers as great a record ii not greater than their illustrious predecessors. All in all, when the curtain rang down on the 1942 successors of the 1941 Champions, it ended one of the most profitable seasons any Perry team has enjoyed. Three key positions will be left vacant due to graduation, and it will be some time before these spots can be tilled with the efficiency that has been shown the past year. The '42 team will not be remembered for conquering all their tournament foes and becoming State Champs, but you can bet your boots that this team will long be remembered as one of the greatest teams ever turned out by the river front school. Coupled with his ability as an accurate, while at the same time daring, shot, his phenomenal foul shooting record made him one of the most dangerous youngsters in the district. Bob played all three positions during the course of the season, and played all three expertly, if not perfectly. His loss to the team will be sorely felt and his vacancy hard to fill. LOUIS GROZA fCaptainl - Chief is one of the three 3-sport stars of Ferry Hi, and he has proved his worth in all three, especially on the hardwood, He was selected on the All-Ohio team last year after turning in one sparkling performance after another. Being elected captain to the successors of the court kings, he did his job remarkably well. His value under the backboard was proven over and over again, as Well as his spirit and determination to tight to win. lt will be a long time before another center with Lou's ability is bestowed on the Riders and each and every performance will long be remembered by the loyal backers of the Purple. BOB MCILVAIN lGuardl - 'Mac' played his usual game, is an expression heard many times after each game. His usual game was always a sterling, stand-out performance. Mads game was a cool, clean, hard-fought game in which the opposing for- wards knew his real value. Although his first and last year, he played like a veteran. Moreover, little more would be wanted of a guard. Mac's graduating will take one of Ferry's most reliable guards from the high school court. JAMES L. Jack McCarty, only returning letterman, and Chris Meleanos, are co-cap- taining this year's squad, and will lead the struggling Purple through a season which may not be impressive, but will certainly be serving the purpose of building strong, hard cinder-treaders for future years. Though suffering a very bad season, the Riders were able to salvage a third place in the district meet at Uhrichsville last year, which goes to show that that ever present fighting spirit, which has always marked Purple sports, is not lacking in its track team. With only three seniors on this year's squad the Purple will return next year with a crop of experienced thin clads that will start Coach Thomas' aims to make track a major sport at Martins Ferry well on their way. The past two seasons have been very successful, the boys won all but one match the first year, and went through undefeated last year. Only one member of Coach Sandrock's last year's team was taken by graduation, and great things are expected of the boys this year. BASEBALL 1942 Although the 1942 Purple Rider baseball squad lost their first three league games, the Riders will in all probability come up to par and present a formidable aggregation by tournament time. With the future in mind Coach Fred Hart is testing all his charges to find the right combination, and when he does it will be too bad for the opposition. The most glaring weakness in the Rider nine is their pitching staff. Their star pitchers lost by graduation, they were forced to muster a brand new firing line. Bob Mcllvain headed this group and is sure to develop. His understudy is Nick Vrotsos, a sophomore. Although these two are considered to be starting pitchers, quite a few others have been on the mound for the Purple. Although Weak in other positions the Ferrians are strong in the infield. They have an experienced foursome, although Peroni and Shingle alternate at second base, while Lou Groza, Zelenitz, and Becca comprise the other three- fourths. Both offensively and defensively this group of infielders compare with the best in high school circles. Frank Holozy, behind the plate, and Young, Suriano, Vargo and McHim round out the fly chasers. .. The Riders play in a tough league, and they will have to really start stepping in order to knock off some of the top-notchers and climb a few rungs on the league ladder. Although miracles do come true it won't be a miracle of the Purple and White start stepping. It will just mean that they have hit the right combination and are on the road to success. One of the main obstacles in the playing of their home games was the South Fourth Street diamond, ex-dump, which forms the home grounds for the home nine. All in all, the 1942 Riders will probably end up their season showing that they have put out everything for a success. .TACH BLAIR, 42 NAY SHOE CO. Headquarters for Shoes, Wheeling, W.
