Co-Captains Walter Smith and Nathaniel Ody led this year's Cross Country squad into its eighth con- secutive P.S.A.L. championship race, topping all Queens schools in this achievement. Although the team did not match last year's second place finish in the city championship, this year's tenth place spot was a fine achievement since the only returning member other than the captains was Senior Bruce Walsh. Van Buren has always had a fine team, and has been the only team in Queens to be able to stay in the A division of the P.S.A.L. - the toughest - for eight consecutive years, a feat the entire team, and twelve year coach Mr. Capelli can be proud of. Many team members had outstanding individual achievements this season, and most prominent were those of the two captains. Walter Smith won the Queens indoor mile championship, and Nathaniel Ody was a medal winner in the Queens indoor 600 yard championship. 5 t - , L Billy Halloran proved to be a valuable asset to the team. The girls on the indoor and outdoor track teams surely made tracks, run- ning their way through their P.S.A.L. matches with flying colors. The excel- lence of the girls on these two teams can be exemplified by the Senior Class President, Yvonne Joyce, of the outdoor team, who holds the city record for the long jump - 18' 6 M . Venessa Klenner crosses the finish line in first place achieving another victory for Van Buren.

This year's Girls' Varsity Volleyball Team, under the direction of Coach Kate Raynor, and Captains Ingrid Hartcorn and Sharon Kresh, com- pleted a 4-4 season against such competition as Bayside, Cardozo, Francis Lewis, and Bowne High Schools. At the beginning of the season, the entire team was highly optimistic. Yet there was still some anxiety present because it had been moved into a new division, meaning that it would be playing teams it had never played before. Also, the team was made up mostly of new and inexperienced players, with few veteran players to draw strength from. Because of these factors, the team's results didn't match the play- ers' efforts. The team has high hopes for next season and with more experi- ence, it may make the city champion- ships. f l 1 5 Sharon Kresh about to fail opponents' chance to score.
