V.B.'s Girl's Tennis Team com- pleted another successful season this spring. Basically a veteran team, it is composed of dedicated players who practice three to four times a week in preparation for meets against such competitors as Cardozo, Bayside, Francis Lewis, and Bowne High Schools. Each competition consists of five events where the best of three sets win. Mrs. Sousa was pleased with the team's improved record, and sees promise for the team in the fu- ture. Van Buren has always had one of the five best baseball teams in Queens and this year was no excep- tion. The team plays in the strongest division of the P.S.A.L., facing up To Holy Cross, Malloy H.S. and even sev- eral Nassau County teams. V.B. prac- tices and plays its home games at Alley Pond Park. Mr. Kessler, who will retire from coaching after this season, believes that the team has terrific tal- ent and will continue to be a leading team. Ashkinazy takes a short break between innings. Competition consists of, as in girls' tennis, three singles mat- ches, and two doubles matches. Toughest competition has proven to be against Forest Hills and Jamacia. This season was the first for Mr. Stan Keslonsky, the Coach, who previously coached girls tennis at Jamacia High. Mr. Keslonsky antici- pates a successful coaching career at V.B.
